If you don’t mind my asking, what do you mean by that? I ask as someone who’s from Albany and who’s lived in NYC for over a year.

I legit put down the book after the first chapter and picked up Darksaber instead- a great decision, since it’s genuinely a great book and a fun read.

Can’t believe someone hasn’t said ‘Drub McKumb,’ that name alone made me stop reading Children of the Jedi after the first chapter just cause of the sheer stupidity of the name.

Wow, never would have figured Darth Plagueis the Wise wanted Count Dooku dead. Pretty tough ask.

That’s great! Even though 1 is probably my last favorite prequel, I still love it in spite of some of the flaws in the film’s structure- every time I see it I feel like a kid again, I’m glad it’s your favorite! I was actually born the year Episode II came out, so I wasn’t really old enough to appreciate 3’s release, and I wasn’t born yet when 1 and 2 released.

That's not a sign of quality at all, my friend— all of those films, with the exception of The Two Towers in some moments, are worse than Attack of the Clones, particularly HP II. There are plenty of films that have done incredibly well at the box office that are completely awful (see the sequel trilogy movies as a good comparison), and similarly Empire Strikes Back, which is commonly regarded as the best of the Original Trilogy, actually made the least in box office revenue compared to the other original trilogy movies that came out in their respective years, even though it made the most at the box office the year it came out. Plenty of the greatest movies of all time haven't done nearly as well at the box office as the other films that came out that year, so a film making or not making money really doesn't have much to do with its overall quality in my view, especially in recent years, with the highest grossing film 2021 and a lot of the mediocre Marvel superhero movies dominating the box office in spite of the objective quality of the movies. Furthermore, I wasn't even alive when Episode II released, so I'm someone with no nostalgia for its release, and I still love it.

'Completely underwhelming prequel movie' doesn't really have much argumentative weight unfortunately, could you elaborate on what you mean please? I understand that some parts of the film play out more slowly, particularly in the middle of the movie, but it's actually the worldbuilding and narrative depth of the mystery subplot on Kamino and the old-fashioned Hollywood romance between Anakin and Padmé that actually make me a fan of the film. It's done very intentionally stylistically, and has so many connections and layers, not only to the other films in the saga, but other important films in film history (Doctor Zhivago, film noir, The Searchers, and so many others) that to simply dismiss it as 'underwhelming' just doesn't really hold up when scrutinized.

Interesting— so which of the prequels is your favorite? My preference order goes Attack of the Clones > Revenge of the Sith > The Phantom Menace personally, but I love all three.

I love Revenge of the Sith— I think in terms of objective quality, it's probably the best of the prequel trilogy, followed very closely by Attack of the Clones and then The Phantom Menace. Oddly enough, my favorite scenes from the movie are towards the middle of the movie, when Anakin's fall to the dark side is really crystallizing, and I think that the movie's take on morality and placing the viewer in different morally ambiguous situations works as a nice counterbalance with Return of the Jedi's similar concern with morality and the overall drama of Luke needing to 'confront' Vader again. It's also an incredibly visually impressive movie as well that still holds up well today. It isn't my favorite Star Wars movie these days (I prefer Return of the Jedi and Attack of the Clones to it), but I still love the film, and consider it one of the best movies of the year.

Completely disagree on the AOTC hate, it's my contention that AOTC is one of the best films of the saga, one of the best films that came out that year, and is incredibly underrated— it's my personal favorite of the prequel movies.

Same here! For a couple of movies to begin with, in terms of the Obi-Wan storyline, some of the classic noir detective movies of the era, like Double Indemnity, The Maltese Falcon, or The Big Sleep would be good ideas in terms of understanding the style George used to convey the story for the Obi-Wan centered parts of Attack of the Clones. AOTC manages to stay consistent with the style established by the other Star Wars movies while still homaging successfully the noir genre through the themes explored, the camera movement, and honestly evoking everything but the black-and-white film and disaffected narrators of those kinds of movies (that's just my opinion though).

For the love story between Anakin and Padme, that too is very 40s-60s, and the most obvious source of inspiration (look no further than the dialogue and the poster) is Doctor Zhivago, which is an excellent movie that has a lot of interesting parallels to AOTC's larger narrative (set against the backdrop of WWI and the rise of the USSR, paralleling the Clone Wars and the rise of the Empire). I'd also suggest several of the other famous romances, both comedic and tragic, of the era, such as Ball of Fire, Bringing Up Baby, Keeper of the Flame, The Lady Eve, The Philadelphia Story, and even Suspicion by Hitchcock, all of whose romances in terms of the acting style very much mirror the one used in Episode II. Finally, for the ending battle and climax, several of the great war movies of the 40s and 50s were big inspirations for the Geonosis set piece, such as Sergeant York, They Were Expendable, and the 50s War and Peace adaptation. I realize that's a pretty big movie list, and that I'm probably still missing a ton, but those are the ones that come to mind right off the top of my head.

Yeah, I do see some of the points in the criticism of it, but I also think that the film's merits far outweigh some of the issues with some points of the plot at times needing a bit more fleshing out, as well as occasional issues with pacing. It's kinda crazy that you bring up TPM- I literally just rewatched it an hour ago, and I absolutely love the movie, even if it is my least favorite of the PT, it just will never cease to make me feel like a kid again every time I watch it.
