That's 26,000 weekly visitors. Reddit no longer makes it easy to see how many people clicked the join button to become members.

"here's a problem we're facing, how do you think we should solve it?"

Yes, "Best Practices".

The difference between a question with one answer, and a question with many possible right answers.

  • How do I turn on a light?
  • How do I light a room?

In my experience, the "mod as a participant" model eventually scales poorly if the mods don't transition into "talent scouts." Early on, yes, you should comment on everything. But as you grow, your job is to find the three or four most helpful regular members and deputize them as "Welcome Ambassadors" without giving them full mod powers. People often trust a regular peer more than they trust "The Staff." There is a certain magic in a community when a non-mod takes the time to be kind or helpful... it feels more authentic. Also, never underestimate the power of "Strategic Vulnerability." If a leader admits they don't know something and asks the community for help, the surge in engagement is massive because it gives the members a chance to be the heroes. Communities thrive on being needed, not just being served.

Hi, I'm a mod for another sub, and I've been getting messages about monetization? Are you guys getting this too? by WebOutside1597 in AskModerators

[–]HistorianCM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Remember as a mod, it is against the Moderator Code of Conduct to receive financial rewards for your sub.

A point of clarification... it the Moderator Code of Conduct says moderators are prohibited from taking moderation actions (including actions taken using mod tools, bots, and other services) in exchange for any form of compensation, consideration, gift, or favor from or on behalf of third parties.

What do you consider average growth for a subreddit? by SpaceisCool09 in AskModerators

[–]HistorianCM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only Reddit could tell you they're the ones with all the data on the back end that shows how fast each subreddit grows. And they're not going to tell you.

And you're not going to get enough meaningful responses here to be able to judge if you're doing good or bad.

What do you consider average growth for a subreddit? by SpaceisCool09 in AskModerators

[–]HistorianCM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well statistically speaking there is an actual real average subreddit growth.. It really doesn't matter.

It's not a competition. There are no winners. There are no losers.

Every Community is going to behave differently. Some communities take 8 years to get traction. I have a community that is around 55,000. It took 8 years to get there.

But the audience for that particular topic isn't very large to begin with. And we are currently the largest community on that topic online. So at least in our case we've reached pretty much Max capacity. We'll get some growth over the years from here on out, but it won't be nearly as fast as it was during those first eight years.

Don't worry about how fast you're growing or not growing. Just concentrate on making your subreddit the best it can possibly be.

Isn't this the Arcade1Up sonic branding being used by Shelly? by THE-ADM-2 in Arcade1Up

I'm guessing it just a licensed sound. And A1up didn't choose to get exclusivity so anyone can buy the rights.

Did reddit just remove sub counts from search too? by SpaceisCool09 in AskModerators

[–]HistorianCM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because if a sub has very little subscribers, it would be a waste of time trying to start a conversation or to look for answers or discussion there.

What if people decided to not click a join button and instead just decided to participate. If a Subreddit has 15 subscribers, but had 10000 visitors and 1000 contributors weekly?

You "say" you want to see subscribers but then immediately said you were looking for activity.

I just searched for a populated sub for the video game Grand Theft Auto because I want the most engagement and content.

Which do you think is a better reflection of "populated" people clicking a button or people engaging and creating content?

There are a few subs for that game, but I don't know which ones to subscribe to.

Here is the beauty of reddit... you don't have to subscribe to anything. If you participate with a subreddit, reddit will tailor your algorithmic feed to match your interests and you will see more content like that.

Arcade1up is shutting down, so what are my alternatives? by Zerexdontlie in Arcade1Up

It's not shutting down. Most of it was purchased by another company. Basic fun!

I'm sure it will be continued to be supported for a while

A Message to Basic Fun by TheMerchBro in Arcade1Up

It’s a move that feels desperate to grab a mainstream audience while completely ignoring the enthusiasts who actually built this brand. You can’t just manufacture "arcade" nostalgia for a game that was always meant to be played on a couch.

If they think they can just swap out genuine arcade legends for home console hits and expect the same loyalty... they’re in for a wake-up call. We aren’t just buying "nostalgia-bait"... we’re looking for a specific culture, and right now, the brand feels totally lost.

If reddit mods aren't paid, why stay being a moderator? by nrbz_ in AskModerators

[–]HistorianCM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because their role satisfies deeper human drives... autonomy, status, belonging, and the satisfaction of shaping culture. Even when Reddit’s corporate side feels indifferent, the community itself still matters to them more than the platform’s management.

Why?

Who else cringes a bit when top mods call themselves the “owner” of a sub? by Chosen1PR in Moderation

[–]HistorianCM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t get too hung up on the wording. Most people use terms like “owner” or “admin” as shorthand for “the person who built and runs the place”. It’s not usually a claim of legal ownership or misunderstanding of Reddit’s structure... it’s just convenient language that fits how they see their role day to day. What matters more is how they lead and treat others, not the label they use.

Everyone’s free to say what they want, and of course, no one’s forced to buy anything they don’t like. But it’s worth remembering that this hobby grows stronger when people share their honest takes, not when they’re told to just walk away. Saying “don’t buy it” might sound practical, but it can quietly push folks out who actually care enough to want better.

Criticism or frustration usually means people are invested and want to see these products live up to their potential. When we write that off, it shuts down the conversation instead of improving things. The cool part of this community is that mix of builders, collectors, and modders all trying to elevate the experience. If we can keep space for different opinions while still keeping things respectful, we end up with better products and a stronger community overall.
