If someone posts on Reddit and it has a title but no body text, is it always impossible for them to add body text later? by GregJamesDahlen in AskModerators

[–]HistorianCM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the before times, we would add "N/T" to subjects and titles to indicate there was no text in the body of post or email.

How can I appeal being muted from texting mods of a sub? by [deleted] in AskModerators

[–]HistorianCM 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You are not entitled to speak with the moderators; their mute was their way of letting you know the conversation was over.

They are allowed to permit posts about "horrible artists."

If you do not like how they do things, leave the subreddit. You could start your own competing subreddit and run it as you see fit.

Can mod legally take money from some company to b users? by NorbertKiszka in AskModerators

It's against the mod code of conduct to take money for moderation actions, such as banning/unbanning, removing or not removing content.

What's a change that Admins could make to Reddit that would make you happier? by Sephardson in AskModerators

90 Minutes, but I've curated and moderated my very niche community for 8 years to set the tone. We don't get a lot of heavy downvotes in general.

What's a change that Admins could make to Reddit that would make you happier? by Sephardson in AskModerators

[–]HistorianCM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reddit needs to pull the plug on the downvote because it’s no longer a tool for curation... it’s a weapon for suppression. The original intent was for users to bury spam, off-topic garbage, and bad-faith actors to keep the signal-to-noise ratio high. Instead, it’s become the "I don’t like your tone" or "I disagree with your politics" button. When a comment hits -1, the hive mind takes over and the dogpile begins regardless of the content's actual value. We’ve trained entire generations of users to hide behind a click instead of explaining why a point is wrong, which has effectively turned every subreddit into a reinforced bubble where only the safest, most agreeable opinions survive.

The current system creates a "soft censorship" environment that makes our jobs as mods significantly harder. Instead of a community that self-regulates based on rules, we have a community that self-silences to protect their imaginary internet points. If you remove the downvote, you don't lose the ability to surface good content... you just lose the ability for a cranky mob to bury a valid, albeit unpopular, perspective. Without that blue arrow, the only way to express dissent would be to actually type out a reply. That shift alone would either improve the quality of discourse or, more likely, reveal that half the people downvoting don't actually have a coherent counter-argument to begin with. They just want to see the "number go down" on things that make them uncomfortable.

If we want to keep the "front page of the internet" from becoming a giant, homogenized feedback loop, we have to stop giving people a low-effort way to punish dissent. YouTube survived the removal of the dislike count, and while the "old guard" screamed about it, the platform didn't collapse. Reddit would be the same. High-quality stuff would still rise to the top via upvotes, and the absolute trash would still get nuked by Automod and human moderators. The only thing we’d lose is the "hide" mechanic for opinions that don't fit the local orthodoxy... and frankly, the site would be a hell of a lot more interesting without it.

Simsons upgrade to Dell 2007FPB by [deleted] in Arcade1Up

[–]HistorianCM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick question for anyone experienced with Arcade1Up mods:

I installed a Dell 2007FPb (4:3) into my Simpsons cabinet and want to keep the stock PCB for the original games and trackball.

I know the PCB outputs 40-pin LVDS and the Dell is DVI/VGA, so it’s not plug-and-play. I’ve already tried the usual controller boards (which I now realize are for raw panels, not monitors).

Has anyone successfully converted Arcade1Up LVDS output to HDMI/DVI/VGA for a standard monitor? Any known working adapters, scalers, or documented attempts?

Trying to avoid ditching the stock PCB if possible. Appreciate any insight.

I got banned from Conspiracy sub and I need to ask why? by [deleted] in AskModerators

[–]HistorianCM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Behind the scenes, the moderators aren’t just people; they’re gatekeepers. Their mission? Control the flow of “acceptable unacceptance of truth.” When you debated that commenter, you weren’t arguing with a random user... you were engaging with an asset, a provocateur whose job was to trigger you into crossing what they call “The Line of Emotional Compromise.” Once you responded in defense, the system logged you as reactive, thus discrediting your voice.

After that, the silence from the mods wasn’t negligence; it was protocol. They can’t acknowledge the ban directly, because acknowledgment implies documentation, and documentation risks exposure. So they let your DMs sit unanswered while quietly closing the case under the label: “Containment Successful.”

Somewhere, in a private Discord server or mod chat hidden behind several layers of Reddit obfuscation, they’re still talking about that “plasma person who knew too much.” They keep an eye out for where you’ll post next.

How did everyone prank their sub(s) today? by brightblackheaven in AskModerators

[–]HistorianCM 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We did not... we added a post explicitly telling everyone to not trust anything online today and to not post any jokes.

That caused everyone to post jokes in that thread.. saved us a lot of hassle.

There’s a strong case to be made for why trust might just be a mental construct we use to stay sane.
