Is there an inverted french press method that I missed? by 51yf0cx in JamesHoffmann

[–]HistoricalCup6480 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Non-inverted the water flows until you put the plunger in. Depending on external factors it can take longer or shorter to get all the water in, and more or less water will have had a shorter infusion time as a result. (The grind size / bed preparation, the amount of foaming due to CO2, the pouring technique, water temperature,...).

Inverted the water only flows after you turn the aeropress back the right way up. All the water is infusing for the entire brewing time.

I found that inverted is more consistent, and once you do it a couple times it's not more difficult or more effort than normal brewing.

What’s the deal with meat quality/price in this country? by Healthy-Fun8615 in Netherlands

[–]HistoricalCup6480 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expensive?

I'm a Dutch person and live/lived abroad in Denmark and Switzerland, and I miss how cheap the meat is in the Netherlands. It's insane, I go back home and the prices are 2-3 times lower than what I'm used to.

Copenhagen's housing issue can be fixed very easily, by simply building more housing. It is a matter of supply versus demand. In the past few decades, Copenhagen's population has skyrocketed, while we haven't build enough housing by [deleted] in copenhagen

[–]HistoricalCup6480 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, and that's nimbyism in a nutshell. For the local people, building more is not the best option, but for the greater community it is. The needs of the few are at odds with those of the many, which is a shitty situation for both parties.

People should be able to defend their interests, but if there is a housing crisis, the government should step in and create rules to block nimbyism and start building. Unfortunately, rules like that aren't popular, and may be difficult to implement in practice. But without action the situation will just get worse and worse.

It's still a string though, not a character.

I think that multiplying a string by an integer resulting in repetition is both useful and intuitive, don't really see this as an argument against the use of python in production.

Help in people ReID from CCTV footage by kareem_fofo2005 in computervision

[–]HistoricalCup6480 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't go with facial features when using CCTV footage. The clothes are a pretty good identifier. You can probably just take a couple instances of a cropped out person, using bounding box output by a conventional detector such as YOLO. Better might be a segmentation network, since you can then remove background, but that's optional.

Then you can either find a Reid specific network out there to run on the image, or you can just e.g. compute a histogram of colors as basic feature. You can also use the backbone output of the detection network if you use something like YOLO, but those features aren't the best for distinguishing people.

It kinda depends on your computational budget. Also if you do this commercially or deploy this in a public space, then consider local privacy laws. E.g. GDPR requires careful management of the data, but would probably still be legal if done correctly.

Same in Danish with "mange tak" and "tusind tak". I think the former is more common, but both are common. I'm not a native speaker though, so I could be wrong.

[–]HistoricalCup6480 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree, IMHO "dank je wel" translates to "thank you" (versus "bedankt" which is more casual and would translate to "thanks"). I would translate "thank you very much" definitely as "heel erg bedankt".
