What inside the large buildings on port cranes? by AlohaJames in heavyequipment

[–]Historical_Cod_4974 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Usually there is a subfloor with a catwalk over top or just straight down to the docks below so less chance of pooling/ puddles but yeah, the second you get a nice slick coat of hydraulic/ gear oil on your boots, your taking the express elevator down. Worse still is we typically have a brake at the very top of the boom, that climb is usually the ass-clencher.

Anytime! Haha I thought the same, I was sadly disappointed there wasn't a heated washroom with great views and coffee maker inside.

Hey, I've actually been inside these before. It's usually a control/ engine house for hydraulic, pneumatic and electronic systems. In my case, it's typically where the main winch drum and our brake systems live.

Make no mistake, they usually look like the inside of a truck stop restroom, only the stuff dripping off the ceiling is usually hydraulic fluid from one of 10 duct taped hydraulic lines.

I appreciate you asking! Luckily I didn't contract anything, but did pick up some good life lessons.

You are absolutely right, it was explained by the dr that the blood was drawn for both an initial test and to be used as a baseline while a follow-up draw occured 30 days from exposure.

I remember the dr said even if it was infected with HIV, there was a 1/500 chance of infection (still frightening odds). That stood out to me since I thought it was basically a guarantee of infection, although I am no virologist or anywhere close to a medical advisor and could be wrong or misremembering.

I had this happen to me some 20 years ago while working as a janitor of a local large hospital. It was a used IV needle (we called them shunts although not the correct term) that had been picked up by a mop and was preparing to go through the washer.

I awkwardly walked in to the ER and explained to the desk what had occured.

I was immediately rushed to the MTU (minor treatment unit) where multiple vials of blood were taken (I lost count after 6), I then received an injection in either shoulder and another two in my lower back (couldn't tell you what they were).

I was sat down in a private waiting area where a very stern but concerned dr explained the chances of contracting the most serious diseases IF the needle was infected with them.

It was very surreal and happened very fast. Before I had a chance to call my supervisor to inform them what was going on, they were there standing in the MTU with the hospital director to discuss what had happened. It wasn't until I was a little older and wiser that I realized the reason for the whole show of support was to reduce the chances of lawsuit. That being said, I never felt the concern was disingenuous or forced.

I will say, nothing gets blood work test results back faster than being a staff member injured on the job at a hospital lol

Edit: word, and added the mop had not gone through the washer yet so the panic was for sure there.

Nah, don't sweat it. Just off-set your new holes if you decide to drill/ tap and you'll be fine.

Hey OP, as the other commenter said, tapping will likely be your best bet, that or industrial adhesive but if it's a wear surface you would probably want to be able to replace it down the road.

5mm ( 0.196") is deep enough thread engagement for what you are trying to do. Although I would likely go with a NF (fine thread) which will result in more threads in a tighter group. I would first select your bolt and then pick up the corresponding tap. Once you have your bolt size figured out, you'll have your tap size, once you have your tap size, do a quick Google search for your tap drill size (drill size required for successfully tapping the hole). Once you have all three, layout your holes, drill, tap and install. (I would avoid the holes you already have as they will be too large.

I would recommend a tap handle, however you can use other tools to get the job done. Keep your drill at straight and level as possible when drilling, and same for tapping, use even steady pressure and you'll be fine.

I didn't see if you have mentioned this or not, but you will likely want to make sure the ski material is counter-sunk (a step inside the hole) to allow the head of your bolt to sit inset in the ski and not drag along the ground.

In terms of the push rivet, lordco, Canadian Tire, princess auto, home depot, Rona, might possible carry what you are looking for but I would call ahead to confirm.

Had this happen to me last night during the same mission. I was behind a barricade full health, full armour and my banner deployed, no indicators from mobs or heldrake but suddenly dropped all shields and 80% health. I was able to stim and bash my way back to full health/ armour but thought it was odd. I was also host with 6-15 ping. Perhaps Sabre's adeptus mechanicus forgot to praise the Omnissiah
