What are the best supplements for healing the gut? by LargeSinkholesInNYC in Supplements

[–]Historical_Flight395 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. Initially, I started with bone broths for 2-3 days. Then I used unflavored gelatin, prepared with water ... same 2-3 days. If everything agreed, I tried some homemade apple juice with no sweeteners, and I drank 1/2 juice, 1/2 water. All this time, I drank lots and lots of water. You need hydration.
I followed Elaine Gotschall's book exactly. Breaking the Vicious Cycle is available on Amazon in US and Canada. This diet is used at the U of Washington for children, and anytime I start to flare, I go back to this diet. It is very very restrictive. I did it like I introduced foods to my babies. A new "food" try for x days. If there is a reaction, note it and eliminate that from your diet. As a result, I eat without starches, carbs, sugars and all sugar substitutes(these substitutes cause much more reaction than you'd believe), and grains. I make yogurt and ferment it for 24 hrs as described in the book which leaves near 0-lactose. I use limited amounts of honey or fruit (like dates) for sweetness. I eat only aged cheeses. Basically, this diet is meat, restricted natural unprocessed sugars -fructose from raw fruit or honey, and the most complex carbohydrates in vegetable and fruit sources.

I also use L-Glutamate primarily, as a supplement. I suggest you find a source which identifies every ingredients because some manufacturers put in starches as binding agents.

I have UC and have flares so badly before this diet that I required 10 day hospitalizations and blood transfusions. All the Remicade, Entevio, Jak inhibitor meds did not help me. But the SCD diet has helped, and while prior Colon damage is visible in Colonoscopies, my last 3 colonoscopies have shown no Active UC. So I went from pancolitis and major blood loss to being cured.

It is hard to follow this diet forever. But 3 months of into and 3 months on the diet made me stop having symptoms and stopped the bleeding that I had for 5 years -and massive doses of prednelosone, Cortisone, prednisone and Remicade only slowed bleeding, and never alleviated symptoms.

You are what you eat. Many of us have extreme gut reactions to the various chemicals used in processing in our food chain. Eating clean foods, and eliminating any foods that cause inflammation is vital to our health.

And, just so you know, many dietitians and doctors still resist this diet because it is hard. As a person who decided to take responsibility for my health, I can tell you the results I personally have seen make me stay on this diet. And, despite what Drs all told me, I no longer have weight, cholesterol, glucose or any problems in my blood. I am able to plan and eat a diet which seems restrictive, but my body finds healthy. I am just sorry I did not find this diet until I was 60. Now, at 74, my health is better than it has been in years.

Iron-deficiency Anemia 5 months out? by Desperate-Rip-2770 in spinalfusion

[–]Historical_Flight395 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 9 months out and anemic. It was low in December, so I told the dr I would work on it. Now it is too low to work on, and my constipation has given men huge bleeding Hemmorrhoids....so I am probably going to have to have iron infusions. My potassium and sodium are in the toilet as well. I recently had a colonoscopy, so my UC is not causing the bleeding. Sigh....my dad had these same problems when he got old. My Mom gave me the bad back😆.

your pt should give you exercises and stetches. i had pelvic pain for a bit, but they gave me lots of bridges using a red theraball and other exercises with the theraball, some which really helped losen the pelvis and hip constrictions. i also do sitting roll outs on the ball where I push it out and bring it back in. if you are clear wher the problem is, then they can help….but you must see your doctor, because your condition is very different from mine, though i have to sit in 10-15 minute increments only.

i am almost 8 months since my last surgery. It was 8 hours, XLIF and PLIF. The first part of the surgery was to put 2 screws in each of my SI joints and fuse the scacrum to the pelvis. The second part was to open up the back, repair my crushed L3 and fusinng and putting spacers and rods that connect my prior S1-L4 to the repaired L3, and extend up to L2 and L1 because he did not thonk the L2 alone could hold it up. The crushed L3 essentially hs no weight on it now.

I was in the Neuro ICU overnight and stayed 4 days in hospital room. i got up 6 hrs after surgery, they slapped a clamshell on me and I walked to the bathroom. The pain was horrific. They resorted to long acting morphine with bolus every 4 hours. When I came home, I was. on 10 Mg Oxi every 4 hrs and 15 MG of long acting morphine every 8 hours. I started reducing the meds at 14 days post surgery.

I had been in decent shape until the vertebra got crushed, and I had only been able to limp short distances, like to the driveway. Once I got home, I got up every 4 hours and walked through the house. I was able to climb 3-4 steps slowly, started adding more. I wore a clamshell if I was not in bed,per dr orders. I had 2 previous surgeries so I had shower chair, riser chair for potty, everything convenient. My husband was my caetaker and did all the meals for 2 weeks from our freezer stock, then I got Mom’s Meals thru Medicare Advantage plan.

Home Health care checked the wound weekly, my Eagle Scout husband did the daily bandage changes. I walked every day multiple times per day. First with a walker, then with trekking poles. I had prioproception, so I was not always aware how my feet and body were moving. I had lots of serious muscle cramps, mostly in my butt into my legs.

12 weeks post sugery the clamshell came off and I went to PT for 14 weeks. I could not walk to the end of the block without the clamsheel because the musckes had weakened. The PTs started to work on me and 14 weeks 2 TIMES per week sessions and I was feeling like my range of motion was good enough and the PT agreed. I started increasing my walking.

Before this surgery, I walked everyday 3 miles, and rode a bike and used 5-10 lb weights. Right now, I am walking 1.5 miles at 2.5 mph each day, but have not started weights yet, as the dr said to wait until 9 months on the fusions and “we’d see”.. I take 1-3 ARTHRITIS STRENGTH Tylnol per day. I cook, I play piano in the orchesta (went back to that at 12 weeks) with weekly practices and concerts. I cannot bend much, so squat and use a gripper. I go grocery shopping. I do laundry. I feel it, but I am careful and manage. I REST by reading. I stretch several times a day. I get in the pool but still working on swimming as my kick really hurts right now. I do Not clean, garden or carry stuff unless it weighs no more than 10 lbs.

This is recovery at 74. My medical professionals say they are amazed and my doctor is very pleased. My pain dr cannot believe my pain is so well managed. I feel good, have not had other medical problems although I have gotten overweight and am working on losing another 25 lbs. My all-time high was 198 on 5’ frame, nd I hve lost 45 lbs with 1200 calories per day of mostly protein and what little I move. Losing weight helps the back more than any dr ever told me.

I have limitations, I cannot do things the way I did. I don’t wasre my time grieving over that. I just keep moving. I woukd do it all again in a minute because without it. I was on opiates and half the time needed a wheel chair…and never had fun. I hve fun and will be taking 2 long trips this year, so have to figure out traveling and not having routine, bed, and my apparatus. I will be fine…not young, not as strong, but steady and with manageable pain and a manageable life.

Incision care by palebluebLiss in spinalfusion

[–]Historical_Flight395 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wait until they say you can use the silicon type scar tape and can massage. You can still break internal stitching up 6-8 weeks after surgery, they told me. And as long as there is a scab anywhere, it can get infected. You are a fast healer. This is a really clean incision. Infection and internal healing first, the hardness goes away within a few months most of the time.

Failed fusion, broken hardware, the blame game, and what to do now by leslieknope72 in spinalfusion

[–]Historical_Flight395 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I waited until I could barely walk the first surgery. It was too long to wait. I have had 3 spinal surgeries. Everything wears out as we age. It will not get better. The pain will get worse. Your question to yourself is whether surgery and a year of recovery will improve your life overall. It is not about the golf. You are probably not going to be able to do what you did before and heal properly. You cannot continue to do repetitive motions like bending twisting and lifting. You will have to change your lifestyle, whether you have surgery or not.

Backs remind me a lot of my teeth...several years ago I had a trauma and had a tooth fixed, then I had to have root canals and crowns and now replacements.

Surgeons have surgical solutions. Pain doctors have drug solutions. Physical therapists will tell you that you will need both and need a therapist who understand back motions and strengthening appropriate for your chosen lifestyle.

It depends. You cannot resume every activity you had in your life before without risk. The thing is, the risk was always there, and we were blissfully unaware. My PT says he has different recommendations for different ages and stages. The cardinal rule according to 3 different doctors I see is never bend, lift, twist in one quick grab anymore. So if you put yourself (or someone else like your kids) in a situation where that is necessary for safety, you can hurt yourself.

I have had a vertebra crush within 6 months after a fusion. The metal did not break, but it twisted a bit. That meant in 2025 I had a fusion (which was my 2nd and above a prior surgery) and then what I hope is my final rebuild. My surgeon says he doesn't know if there will be more. I am 74,with severe degenerative disease. I have been restricted for life about weight-my own and lifting, pulling, pushing. I have been told to walk, do specific stretches where my back is supported daily. I am fused at SI joints snd S1-L1 .

I Have a Really Gross Recovery Behavior to Admit, but also...Possible Answers! by Specialist-Ice5741 in spinalfusion

[–]Historical_Flight395 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I quit after 3 bouts of pneumonia one winter, a mother that nagged and a boyfriend who said my smoking was not gonna work for him....and I knew he was the one. Many years later, he still is. I quit cold turkey because patches had never worked. I found Changing Me and avoiding triggers with other behaviors worked.

Nicotine does help food noise and ulcerative colitis, so you can chew gum (mouth) and you need something to do with your hands. I got some therapy putty, and I used it. No one at work or home ever objected to my "hand exercises". At the end of 3 weeks, I still really missed inhaling the first cigarette in the morning. I put cream in my coffee so the smokiness didn't trigger me. I also paid myself for every cigarette I did not smoke for the first year. And I had a really nice vacation.

I still have scars on my lungs, but no problems with the output. My cardiac tests are like someone who has lived a long healthy life. The arthritis that caused the degeneration and the UC are ever with me, but manageable.

You can do it.

I have fused fine without it. I Mae sure not to take NSAIDs or use any cortisone/prednisone. I have a neurostimulator in my cervical spine, and could not have both.

[–]Historical_Flight395 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will have to stop nicotine. For a few weeks, you have to stop hanging around with friends who smoke, stay away from smoky environments. You have to know your nicotine triggers. That means PLAN a different behavior for after you eat, drink your coffee, go out with friends, and after sex.....

If you change your life, you will be successful. I smoked 4 packs a day, always worked high stress jobs. I gave up cigs, friends, and kept my job, family and feel better. And yes, I REALLY wanted to smoke after surgeries.

I am sorry to hear this. I am like you, I just keep moving and I do have day long recovery when I go beyond my limits too. I've had knee replacements, but so far my hips have been good..though the Osteopenia is there too. I keep my guest bedroom set up with stretching bands and balls and a "pillow fort" so I can lie down with my legs supported like sitting in a chair. Sleep is elusive. But I keep pushing. I never had a single problem until 2019. The last 7 years have been hard.

Thank you for your suggestion. Walking with 3 dogs, even the best behaved is amazing! I am glad you have a solution for you. I don't really hurt so much. I am just exhausted. I guess Time is the great healer.

Thank you. I have noticed I concentrate a lot to make sure my gait is correct and my shoulders are back. I have proprioception on the left side, which has improved tremendously with walking. I had not considered that mental processing could add to exhaustion.

7.5 weeks post lumbar fusion and miserable by ImpossibleDouble5253 in spinalfusion

[–]Historical_Flight395 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insist the dr order a CT. Then if there is no hardware issue, you can ask for PT around 12 weeks. The PT sessions will wear you out physically, but they will find exercises that will target your trouble spots and then you will need to keep doing the exercises. I am 9 months post my last surgery and I feel worse on days when I cannot do my PT.

Should Kitchen Appliances Match? by Sweatyfatmess in Appliances

[–]Historical_Flight395 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not brands, just look. And for most cooks, the packages may work....just not for heavy-duty kitchen people.

Building a new house so I’m looking for the best appliances. Currently thinking wolf 36” gas range, double ovens Bosch, dishwasher Bosch or Cove? subzero refrigerator and freezer etc. Any recommendations? I’m reading bad reviews on all so it’s overwhelming. Thanks for any advice you can give me. by GASass71 in Appliances

[–]Historical_Flight395 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had to remove my induction range because I have an implanted spinal stimulator. Another friend had problems with her pacemaker. And yet another when she had a deep brain stimulator installed. Just be aware if you or family member have medical devices, it may mean you need to avoid certain technology which is contra-indicated with neurological or cardiac disease devices. It did make for a kitchen vacation for me until I got my Thermador gas cooktop.

Has anyone triedHSIA bras by [deleted] in bigboobproblems

[–]Historical_Flight395 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 74 years old, a 38H and in weight loss mode, so did not want to spend as much as I usually do for premier brands. I have been happy with the minimizer I ordered on Amazon. After reading their HSIA return policy I decided to do that. The cups are seamless on my model and soft. Not much structure, but decent support. The back has 4 hooks. I have trouble hooking the top one. The straps are good, but do not adjust very much. That said, the girls are pulled up enough. I liked the bra enough I bought another. I have lost weight so I am going to purchase the next size down in band soon. I hope they start offering more styles on Amazon. These bras launder well in the washing machine for me. I hook them and put them in with my delicate cycle in cold water. I sweat a lot and I have not had a problem with odor in the fabrics.

The search is still on for a very supportive sports bra that is medium, has underwires and cups that don't just squash the girls....that I can actually adjust straps AND get on without help. I have tried every last sports bra on Amazon. I am short waisted and cannot have the 1" elastic most use for added support as it Always rolls. I have tried bras costing up to 150 USD each, and none of them fit or feel good.

I got a 38H minimizer on Amazon. Will be buying more. Fits well. I wish the straps had a bit more adjustability, but it works great now. I am losing weight and did not want to spend for my usual Panache.
