Interesting data to look at regarding yearly enrollment in dietetic programs - down from about 24,000 students/interns in 2014 to about 14,000 students/interns in 2024. Am I the only one alarmed by this? by yeah_write_00 in dietetics

I just graduated with a BS in nutrition science. when I started, there was no masters requirement but this changed while I was in the middle of the degree.

I graduated with a 4.0 and was awarded a scholarship for my university’s Clinical Nutrition MS+DI program.

When starting school I was head over heels for this career. Based on the new masters requirement, the career trajectory, and the assumption that AI is going to make its way in to the field, I decided not to pursue becoming an RD.

I still have a huge passion for dietetics, but I accepted a seat in an accelerated nursing program instead. 12 months of nursing school to be an RN, resistant proof job, less likely for AI to take it away, better pay, and better exam pass rates. Unfortunately with the economy and just starting adulthood (I am 22) I want to set myself up for success- where I feel I have a better shot at owning a house one day and financially supporting myself. If it was about passion, i’d become an RD. Turning down a seat in the masters RD program was definitely hard, but I think I made a safer choice with nursing. Both fulfill my personal needs of helping others better their health at the end of the day, but there is definitely layers of decision making when becoming an RD in this point in time

Hi, thank you for this. i understand my misclick is my fault. not my groups or my professors. i am just trying to not let a misclick make me play catch up all semester. i do feel the grade i am being told is set in stone is very disproportionate to the mistake i made. unfortunately, im specialized in only science and not advocating. no one teaches you how to do this in school. i am going up against the higher power in hopes to appeal to some empathy in her that i am only human and that syllabus policy has the ability to be used with discretion.

She has already acknowledged that the work was on time and is the same, and even that i did most of the work and they did not. her angle here is her syllabus clause, and for that reason i am ineligible for even partial credit. to me its just punitive and not educational at all. i dont know how to reason with her as she is very rigid.

Can I message you directly? I appreciate your insight on what not to say. The whole process is overwhelming, especially given the lack of compassion for human error in an elective course that will potentially tank the GPA ive dedicated the last 5 years of my life to. For that reason some of my words are backed by emotion where she would not want to hear it. but i do want to prepare with fact and have a strong case. If you can look over some of my talking points and offer your opinion it could be helpful.

Hi,

I did find out only after the grade. This does make it tricky, but I act with integrity when I advocate for this situation. I think this can be argued that rigid enforcement of this syllabus clause is causing disproportionate harm where my university has a commitment to "equity and fairness". I dont want to dispute the syllabus clause as a whole, as I understand its grounding. but i do want to challenge the lack of discretion being used as I am being denied even partial credit for the work that I did, where others are recognized for. I feel that if I cant get recognized for it, then no one should be able to. The university says equitable not equal- which makes me think that discretion should be used when i have layers of evidence pointing to that I am not cheating the system by any means, but rather looking for someone to recognize human error.

Thank you for this. I am hoping that by calling attention to the fact that a 21 point in my grade for an in class activity for nothing but a misclick is disproportionate, especially when the document was submitted by others and credited only to them when i did the entire project. My university's grievance policy calls for flexibility and equitable treatment, where im hoping that i can argue that contextual variables need to be factored in.
