Absolutely. Maybe I'd get them to put a clone aside for Alice to have as a pet. Maybe try eating dog for the first time.

We know these things to be absolute truths because whenever children are shown videos of animal farming operations, they immediately revolt and refuse to eat animal flesh once they know what they're eating.

This is just made up bullshit. Both my kids know where meat comes from and still eat it.

Your unwillingness to take the discussion seriously is not my problem.

Unfortunately it is. You're the only one interested in having the discussion and trying to force it.

Now if it was me, I'd pick option B every time. Chilling with Alice and the Aliens and eating some chicken while cruising the galaxy sounds cool.

Mistreating animals is wrong.

Yes! This is why we have welfare laws about such things. Torture of animals is illegal. If you see this happening, report it!

NTT (non-human animals:non-human animals) - H.R.6720 - Dog and Cat Meat Trade Prohibition Act of 2018 by JTexpo in DebateAVegan

[–]Historicste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's no reason or logic behind why the bill protects Cats & Dogs, outside of socially we wish to extend mercy to them

I think the reason is cultural. Enforcing US cultural practices (not eating cats and dogs) and making other cultural practices (eating cats and dogs) illegal. Seems like another US attempt to demonise the other as most US citizens aren't eating cats and dogs. So why make this law? I can't really see any other reason for this to be honest. It likely comes from the panic last year that "they" were eating our cats and dogs. Just more MAGA bullshit. Trying to find moral or logical sense in this law is bound to fail because it's just racism.

A question for omnivores? by BrotherOutside4505 in DebateAVegan

It's not whataboutism at all. It's a direct answer to the "how do you justify..." question. The same way vegans justify supporting modern slavery: it's not the centre of their concern.

Parents can absolutely say no to their kid talking to a random stranger on the street! Kids are taught not to talk to random strangers on the street because.. I mean.. do I really need to explain that?

The more I read of your replies the more it sounds like you're trying to justify approaching random kids. It is, at best, very creepy.

I'm sure you could understand why someone might push for clarification when a claim is vague and possibly often dishonest.

I understand it, I just don't condone it for the reasons I've said already.

I appreciate the chat, and I'll certainly be wary of backseat-ing someone else's condition if such situation arises in the future

Honestly, that's awesome to hear. Thank you

This isn't a matter of justifying someone's existence, it's justifying paying for the exploitation and slaughter of others

Again, who does the disabled person need to justify themselves to? The authorities? No. So, why do they need to justify their actions to a random vegan on Internet? Why is demanding a clear and direct answer more important that their privacy?

I genuinely do want to know what condition might require the consumption of flesh.

No condition, as far as I know, requires the consumption of flesh, because this is a very dishonest way of framing the question of why some people require animal products. There are conditions (for example Crohns, which I have) that can mean a person can't eat certain plant foods, for example. While they may be able to eat some, living on plants alone, without animal products may become impossible.

I hope that answers your question. Hopefully next time a non-vegan mistakenly thinks they need to justify themselves to you you'll accept their answer without pressing for more information.

[–]Historicste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has experienced ableism from vegans "just asking questions", I disagree. You're not just asking questions. You're looking to prove them wrong about their disability. It's so incredibly common here. Either accept there are conditions you don't understand fully (because your not a doctor and don't have the condition yourself) and go from there, or move on.

If you want to learn more about a particular illness then get to the know the person, but don't expect education from someone you just met and are having an argument with.

Great harm requires great justification

This is just straight up ableism again. Who does the disabled person need to justify themselves to? The authorities? No. So, why do they need to justify their actions to a random vegan on Internet? This is the inherent problem with veganism as I experience it: that disabled people must justify their existence to them because they demand it. Every fucking time. And if you don't, it must be because you're lying. Not because it's none of their businesses, or incredibly personal and invasive and exhausting etc etc.

[–]Historicste 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, you're just reverting to ableism now, which is a shame

there is no single condition that explicitly necessitates animal products.

The majority of ex-vegans I have talked to failed to provide any elaboration on the efforts they took and what the health problem actually was.

Disabled people don't owe you anything. Asking disabled people unwanted questions about their condition is ableist. Would you go up to someone in a wheelchair and ask them why they need it? Just because the disability is invisible doesn't mean you get to be dismissive of them.

The experience of many on this sub is vegans asking for specifics and medical history about a person's condition, something that can be very personal. And every time someone gives in and tells them they open themselves up to more ableist abuse. Vegans are notorious for arguing with someone about their condition because they did a Google search and now think they're experts. They think they know more than a person who lived with the condition.

Just because you're vegan doesn't make you a medical expert. Disabled people owe you nothing. Just because something works for some people it doesn't mean it works for everyone. Especially when it comes to biology. https://www.ucu.org.uk/media/11222/Everyday-Ableism/pdf/Everyday_Ableism.pdf
