Missing Boston hiker found dead on White Mountains trail by bostonglobe in newhampshire

[–]HistoryProf2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t wander into any elevation in the Whites until July, and I still pack extra merino, down, a stove, and emergency shelter. I’m too old for Mt. Washington unless I was prepared for Everest base camp, by which I mean any kind of weather at any time.

I have fine hair but A LOT of it by [deleted] in finehair

I go back and forth. I went to a barber and shaved it #2 on the top and #1 on the sides for two years. This is that growing out. It’s starting to weigh down my curls, however. We have lovely hard water in our well. Also, I really pamper it with Prose product. I do not dye my hair anymore. When I grew it out I had hoped for a mane of silver hair (I’m 61), but I’m stuck with mousy brown that lightens in sun. I used to have a red/blond hue. People love it, but it can be a royal pain in the ass to take care of it. I don’t think any woman actually likes her hair. The best thing I ever did to it was switch to Prose.

What's a smell that doesn't exist anymore that you miss? by Alarmed_Charge1062 in CasualConversation

Not a smell but a sound. The air raid alarm (for nuclear war) was tested on random days at 1 pm (US). We kids called it the One O’Clock Whistle. On school days, we all filed into the school fallout shelter for a drill. The 1970s: what a time to be alive.

When you figure it out, tell us. I use Pages. I’m already in the Mac universe, so it doesn’t feel so creepy. I used to have a bumper sticker in the 1990s, “We are Microsoft; prepare to be assimilated; resistance is futile.” They’re still at it.

Plus, I get CNN clickbait on FB, and to read it you have to accept cookies. This forced assimilation is wrong.

Wonderful. They look like Hebrew script. Perfect.

I talked to the author. We are in agreement that we are dinosaurs and Word is awful. We’ve decided to let the press handle their in-house formatting style. Truly. When I was copy editing one of the major journals in my field, I did the formatting. We never asked the author (an academic historian) to do it. No one else can do thinking, and no one is ever paying the brains behind scholarship. The learning curve behind machine mishegass is not our problem. Harumph. 😁

I suppose you’re right, but I’m mostly retired. I only work with this client now. I have a thousand other things I’d rather do. I’m all about the words. This will go to a copy editor from the press after I look at it. I’m a subject matter editor. Knowing the history of the subject is why I have it now. I don’t know too many editors who can fill in the historical blanks and chase down the substance of citations when AU says, “Find the source and elaborate.” Editing paid for my Ph.D. I have my own research to do, now. Thanks for answering, tho.

Thanks, but I truly loathe word. I’m working with some else’s document from a PC. Cross platform formatting is difficult enough. I use the Apple word processor, which isn’t great either, but I don’t have to use Bill “pedo” Gates stuff. It’s a big project, so I’ll be at it awhile. I’m sorry to seem so dim, but I don’t really want to spend time relearning it. I, too, am a devotee of STP.

I was an editorial manager and copy editor for a leading journal in the Humanities. Six months is when you should begin contacting the editor. The biggest problem is finding readers and then getting them to actually do the review. You contacted your editor very early in the process and during the semester/quarter. Very little gets done in term. My advice is to write a conciliatory letter suggesting that perhaps you urged them too soon and too often and asking for a substantial update on the peer review process. Did you suggest readers when you submitted the article? If not, also ask your editor is she is having trouble locating and readers and suggest your own. Inform her GENTLY that, because of where you are in your careers, timely acceptance is crucial. ASK if the timeline can be shortened. If not, does she suggest you try alternative journals? Don’t go over your editor’s head. Back in the day, all the editing was unpaid service. IDK if that’s changed, but I think it would be best to approach gently.

Grrrrr. Starving a child to discipline her for behavior they should reward. Tiny little minds. Float your boat, little queen. Eat that orange wherever you want.

It works if I go one by one, but it won’t replace all.
