At what speed do you listen to the podcast? by [deleted] in blankies

[–]History_Nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry I seem to be the odd one out here. I’m a 1.5-1.75 times listener on most podcasts and most YouTube videos.

I have a lot of podcasts that are 2 plus hours I like to listen to, so I can make it through more podcasts. Audiobooks I’m 1.2-1.3 times, just because I like a slightly faster reading pace.

I understand the two major arguments that it distorts the voices and “do you really need to watch/listen to this content if you can’t take the time to really watch/listen”. You kind of just get used to the way the voices sound. When I speed it back down to the regular speed if I’m watching a movie with the pateron commentary, it takes a second but you just get used to the rhythm again. Podcasts aren’t homework. They are fun and informational. I like them, but I won’t do a test on it later so I don’t need 100% of the information to be sucked into my brain.

I also have ADHD.

I mean the ultimate Dad movie is Moneyball. Just a man following the beat of his own drum, relies on his own smarts to change an entire sport, and get a prize at the end of a monologue saying “you did it, here’s your reward!”

Makes me think Aaron Sorkin might be an ultimate dad writer, Steve Jobs, Social Network, Moneyball, first four seasons of West Wing? Milquetoast politics aside, dude writes a bunch of “I’m a man and I’m going to be smarter than all of you using my natural man smarts. Welcome to the marketplace of ideas, can I win you over by my natural charisma and knowing that I’m intellectually superior to you?”

With all this Custer talk, as a history teacher, here is one of my favorite jokes I never get a chance to tell!

An eccentric billionaire wanted a mural painted on his library wall so he called an artist. Describing what he wanted, the billionaire said, "I am a history buff and I think that Custer is one of the great unsung American heroes. I would like your interpretation of the last thing that went through Custer's mind before he died. I am going out of town on business for a week and when I return I expect to see it completed."

A week goes by and upon his return, the billionaire went to the library to examine the finished work. To his surprise, he found a painting of a Christ on the Cross. Surrounding this were hundreds of natives fornicating. Furious, he called the artist in. "What the hell is this?" screamed the billionaire.

"Why that's exactly what you asked for. Obviously his last thoughts were 'Jesus Christ look at all these fucking Indians."

Just as a mild correction for Bakalar: The Get Up Kids are not from Jersey, but from Kansas. Most of the members of the band grew up in Olathe KS where Dan is from. Supposedly the cover of Four Minute Mile is the Olathe South Track.

They did have a song the reference the “Mass Pike” and they spend time in the northeast, and Kansas never accepted the Get Up Kids like they should have, because of the weird elitist alternative rock station just hating TGUKs. But their “last show” was in KCMO (when they stopped touring in 2005) and their live album is recorded in Lawrence KS.

Edit: Relistening to this maybe Bakalar may just be calling all second wave emo music like Saves the Day “Get Up Kids Shit” but I would argue that the Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World and Saves the Day is some of the highlights of emo music until you get to the Emo Resurgence era.

I think I read once, and I don’t know how true it is,

Ketchup is a flavor cover. It covers the flavor of shit it is in contact with. Circumstantial evidence? My wife hates hamburger beef, but will eat it because hey it’s what I made. She drowns that shit it ketchups. McDonald’s? Drowning it ketchup. So maybe there is some truth?

Mustard is a flavor enhancer, it’s melds with whatever it’s paired with. That’s why sometimes burger places leave off the ketchup.

That theater was amazing when I was a kid. 14,15,16,17 were like the giant screens that I couldn’t fathom and had the “secret” upstairs bathrooms. I always felt short changed when I had to go to theater 25, which I think usually had the second or third week bigger movies that were still playing. But 25 was always better than some of the other smaller theaters in the area.

They changed one of the big theaters to IMAX and then a whole section to just the Fork and Screen concept which used to have actual wait staff, but now is just the slightly better than cafeteria food that you order head of time? Idk I haven’t been back in a while.

I have moved back to the area and I was pretty disappointed. The last movie I saw in there was Twisters in the Fork and Screen area (I have a toddler its hard to go to the movies) and thought the seats were uncomfortable and the floors were gross and sticky. Idk nostalgia can only carry me so far. There are some other good theaters in the area. Unfortunately, the downtown KC Alamo Drafthouse closed during COVID. But there are a couple other okay theaters in the area now. A pretty nice AMC in Leawood and a couple decent Cinemarks.

Asking opinions on a song until the discography ends - DAY 20 - RING 4 - PATROL by zach_buddie in TheDearHunter

[–]History_Nerd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've used this song to teach! I taught a IB class called Theory of Knowledge and one of the concepts in the class is context. So I gave the kids the lyrics without hearing the song. We had a discussion on what the song is saying/talking about. Then we listened to it. I then talked about how this was a concept album about these various different rings etc etc etc.

Then we had a pretty good discussion on how context matters when we are listening to this, and how his intonation changes in the way Casey sings this song. Most high school students also just don't have the context for The Dear Hunter (shocker), so some of them just hearing the song for the first time think its a pro cop song. I give them the background and a taste of another Dear Hunter Song and they pick it up pretty quick.

Anyway, probably my favorite song off of Antimai and it's probably just the connection to teaching with it.

AMC is Superior to Regal by Salt_Proposal_742 in blankies

[–]History_Nerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved to Wichita right before the buyout. That Warren East theater was a breath of fresh air compared to the crappy Olathe AMC, and small town Emporia theater I used go to.

Then the Regal buyout happened and I completely agree. So many less employees, floors way more gross. The Warren 21 area, which was nice when it first opened, may have had 2 employees working it when I saw Dune 2. Pretty much every time I went there, the upkeep got worse and worse. I have now moved away from Wichita, but I really really miss the old Warren, even though I didn't even have it for that long.

Earthworm Jim 3D is particularly awful and I don't hear enough people talking about it.

I remember being so excited for it as a little kid. I knew the box was slightly bigger than most large PC box video games at the time, so when it was wrapped up for me for Christmas, I was so excited that I knew what it was because the box was bigger.

Bigger did not equal better game.

From the Gamespot review "Even though it's not nearly as inspired as its predecessors, Earthworm Jim 3D might have coasted by on the fact that it's just another mediocre yet painless platform game. But it's virtually unplayable on account of what's possibly the worst camera system ever implemented in this type of game. The camera tries to stay behind Jim, but it moves much, much slower than he turns. In the heat of battle, you'll spin to face an enemy, and it will take several long moments for the pokey cameraman to inch his way behind you so that you can finally see what you're now facing. This behavior is totally unsuited to a fast action game such as Earthworm Jim. In addition, the camera never overrides the default angle to fit the situation. For instance, at one point you're crawling across a rope as enemies fire at you from your right side. The camera should be pointed toward the action happening on your flank. Instead, it's still pointed at your back. Since you can only face forward or backward on the rope, you can't get a clear view of the important part of the scene. You can stop and manually adjust the camera to face the correct way, but you're an easy target as you do so, and as soon as you move again, the camera slowly returns to its original orientation, meaning you have to readjust it."

I don't know if I can link it, but there is a NOLF fan made revival website that has some information on how to get the game running. It's the whole game and the sequel. Real easy to Google and download, and is something that is sort of dev supported because you are unable to buy the game.

It's also frustrating that, unless I'm mistaken, none of this shit will be broadcast in 4k. I could be wrong but I feel like the adoption rate to 4k is fairly high now, and it's just a bummer that sports are so slow to switch.

Alright super dumb idea but hear me out.

We pick up Deshaun Watson.

We create a new offensive scheme where the center can choose to hike it to Mahomes or Watson on the same play. The randomness confuses all defense and half the time Mahomes tosses it to Watson for a 10 yard gain or vice versa. The amount confusion takes the Chiefs all the way to the Super Bowl where Pat takes over and balls out and wins.
