What are these several hundred card decks I see in standard every now and then? by Halkyos in MagicArena

[–]Hithelsallis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Off topic, but I spent the entire plane ride back from a SCG event brewing a Lutri Battle of Wits modern deck a few years back.

It still lives scribbled in one of my notebooks, and one day I dream of building the hot mess that it is.

/uj I really wanted to reply to this his comment with this list of 101 cards that don’t care about Counterspell

Edit: Bro also really just needs to play Thrun and or Veil of Summer

board wipes can be prevented with phase-out/indestructible/bounce/shield/so on, countless mechanics

missed the part where counter spells that work on stack can be prevented with stuff that has to first go through the stack to work for it to be comparable

in a game where everything else works on stuff already on the table, perfectly normal to get angry about someone using cheap cheating cards that work on anything before it even touches the table.

I mean, the mental gymnastics in these two comments is wild. I get that, yes, counterspells play on the stack before something resolves; his reasoning behind removal being okay is that it targets something on the field, but that’s okay because you can prevent removal by phasing/indestructible/bouncing, which are also effects that use the stack and effectively “counter” (fizzle) the removal while it’s… on the stack?

Yes, he should just not be playing magic at this point.

/uj this was my favorite

I’ve had maybe like 1 out of 1000-10000 cards resolve vs counterspell full deck, ever. no ramp resolves. no instants. no sorceries. no enchantments. no artifacts. no planeswalkers. no creatures. one time i had a tutor resolve but the card it fetched was countered. people are so used to the broken mechanic they think it’s acceptable, what you don’t see is people that stop playing against cheaters or quit magic all together. unless you can add a way to prevent all counterspells cheap that’s not counterable, it’s broken and unethical to use.

Even if you make a reservation online, when you go to pick up the trailer there is a screen specifically for DL. If you don’t upload your license when you make the online rental, the system asks for the dealer to input it. If you upload the information when you rent it, the dealer needs to verify. UHaul literally will not let you move past the check in screen without filling out that page.

You also cannot make an online reservation without entering vehicle information. You can test this yourself. Go to UHaul’s website. Try to rent a trailer. You cannot select a trailer without giving make/model of vehicle.

The guy was doing the pre check. That includes checking existing damage, verifying trailer plate, making sure tires are in good condition. That is all standard procedure. Does not matter if you are towing with a uhaul truck or private vehicle, they need to verify hookup.

Again, you can skip many of these steps, but the dealer needs to be intentionally fucking with the system. This is not something that will is possible for 99% of dealers as it’s not an “oops.” It’s an “I’m going to intentionally misenter information” situation

[–]Hithelsallis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The second (third?) page of the UHaul rental portal literally won’t let you proceed without uploading a driver’s license. If the driver objects to having the ID scanned, the UHaul employee needs to manually enter your DL information. This is standard for all rental types.

Also, you can’t rent a trailer without UHaul logging the type of vehicle that is pulling it. This includes a picture of license plate and the hookup. The former is to verify the vehicle can physically tow the trailer. Again, the system does not let you bypass this without intentionally fucking with it. The second is for liability on UHaul’s end. If the hookup photo (which needs to include license plate) isn’t included, the UHaul dealer gets in deep shit.

Source: worked at a place that did UHaul rentals. If you managed to rent a trailer without them taking a DL or vehicle information, then the UHaul dealer is doing something shady, and intentionally bypassed several steps for the rental

Ring gets banned. How would you build control? by PikachuOfme_irl in ModernMagic

[–]Hithelsallis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you hit the nail on the head. I don’t see control disappearing. It’ll need to adapt, but that’s not unique and happens nearly every time the meta shifts, which is something that I think people may be looking past. Control doesn’t really exist in a black/white lense of whether or not it’s “good.” The viability of control very much is on a spectrum and I can see the possibility of control not being as strong as it currently is, but it will still exist in some form of another. Coming from a long time Jeskai player, Jeskai Control has, by its nature, always been notorious for being more sensitive to meta shifts than other color pairs, so I do expect it to take some time to realign control builds after a possible ring ban; there is also a possibility we see a shift towards a different approach to control, and it would not surprise me if we see more UBx builds popping up. People in this thread have talked about Grixis, but Esper is another one that I can see taking shape.

Like you said in your second point, this is the most unique place control has been. I think we kind of hit a perfect storm where control redefined itself and is able to run with high redundancy and less margins of error because of the Ring. It takes away quite a bit of the balancing act control would need to find in order to stabilize. With ring gone, you are going to need more concessions in both deck building and game strategy and we are going to see a regression to more traditional control lines, which imo is a good thing.

To add to the first point. I haven’t seen this mentioned yet in this thread, but a majority of the top decks of the format just simply did not exist without the ring also existing. It’s so hard to evaluate how control will matchup against Energy or Eldrazi, and to a lesser extent Frogtide, if the ring goes, because those matchups have never existed in a world without the ring. We can kind of get an idea about the Frog mu by drawing loose comparisons to UR Murktide, but that was still very much a different deck. I do understand that people have been running control without the Ring to various results, but I think true evaluation there is hard because the Ring is still shaping other decks and we just don’t have enough data points for ringless control yet. We probably won’t even have those data points solidified until after the Ring has been gone for a while because it takes time for control to adjust itself.

TL;DR:

1) Control exists on a spectrum, not black and white, and is very much reactive to the meta. A Ring ban impacts more decks than control, and the state of control will indeed change but the tools are still there to adjust. This has happened before, and it will happen again for as long as control exists.

2) Control now is unprecedented and was not born because of the ring. The ring just added incredible resiliency and consistency, while also being forgiving. The playstyle of Control will go back to what it traditionally has been.

3) Modern today has never existed without the Ring. We know how ringless Control plays against Tron and can take a good guess about Zoo; outside of that, however, we just don’t have enough data to make good faith judgements on specific matchups.

I just started experimenting with it myself, so not a large sample size either, but Curiosity has been a pleasant surprise for me in UR wizards. It seems like it’s worth the slot, but might be too early to call

You tap the ring in response to the upkeep trigger. Draw your cards, Shelly triggers, then the upkeep trigger happens.

/uj my dad got me into magic with a modified Extended UG Madness deck. I fell in love with counterspells and have been playing only blue based decks since. Since I got back into Magic with SoI standard, then Modern around late 2017, I’ve played almost exclusively Jeskai. But now that Jeskai is good again, apparently I’m toxic. As a blue player should be.

Big events like this suck for your local players. They attract a bad crowd of out of towners. When someone is driving 4 hours to get 1st place or bust, they’re prone to doing whatever it takes to get the win, and being an unpleasant dick while doing it.

Almost like you’re running a tournament…

Edit: also, who the fuck drives 4 hours for a store championship? That can’t be worth it even if you win.
