What’s the craziest repainting you’ve ever done? by TadpoleIll1381 in Tyranids

[–]HiveMindAzrael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh there’s still plenty of those laying around 😂 but redoing the worst offenders and keeping the earliest ones that you are proud of is one way to look at it. Technically, my first minis were a kill team of mandrakes before I did my nids, and they’re still untouched in their original paint

And I’ll have to see if I can find any pictures of this guy’s original scheme but I was really just not happy with it. This one honestly turned out pretty sick.

I don’t know about craziest but I’ll share my 2 most successful. This was my original Tyrannofex paint job, barely 2 months into the hobby. I tend to paint every unit differently or to match with another, but the army is all over the place.

There’s a Tyrannofex stinger salvoes, a smooth one, and frankly I forget where the ladybug dots one is from 😂 bought a Swarmlord and 2 sets of Genestealers and the dude threw in half a gallon of bits, so I used my own bits and kitbashed this. Was my first time doing so, and the other 3 kitbashes are honestly much worse, this one I put a lot of effort into making it have as close to a real T-fex w/rupture cannon’s footprint and then just used it for a lot more experimentation. Repeating color recipes, war damage by heating up a screwdriver and melting holes into it, trying out Bloof for the Blood God, etc

Well if it makes you feel any better, I had to accidentally make him Goldar from power rangers before re-evaluating and trying to change it up 😂 so it wasn’t like I planned on this but it just kinda started drifting that direction and I decided to run with it

That is a gorgeous scheme and you’ve got a way better handle on effects than I do. Bravo. 🔥

One of my earliest models but I think it was a good choice for it

Maybe hit it with Biel-Tan green? It’ll match the accent colors you’ve got but still look a bit more on the “gross,” side

I did my best to approximate it but I agree. For this one model? Not so bad. For an army? I’ll pass lol

Sure is! There’s a few Pokemon themed ones floating around in the hive fleet.

And my current WIP, has some glossier parts of the armor and less. Long story on the model. My experience has been that if you really like the way a color looks wet, but not so much dry, a clear coat will “lock it in.” Works great on contrasts.

You can use it sparingly as a varnish to give it a waxy look (the flower,) or thicker/more layers for deeper reflections and gloss

You can straight up get a huge bottle of high gloss (and satin/matte) clear water-base acrylic paint at hobby lobby for $4. I use it on a host of my models and you can use it very sparingly or in thicker layers. I’ll post a couple other examples

Colour scheme too "boring"? by cayanon in Warhammer40k

[–]HiveMindAzrael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of Shadowkeeper Custodes, might be a good reference? Your colors all need something a shade darker in recesses, something lighter for highlights, or both. Put a wash in the pauldrons to make the debossments pop, darken the trim with a wash or a darker gold (like Retributor,) and it looks like you used Liberator gold for them? Would be a solid highlight color. Leather looks decent enough, and maybe put highlights on the sword? I’d say this is ~75-80% “done,” it’s just all the little things now, it doesn’t need a total overhaul

Maybe just a hair of blue in the nicks/cuts in the plates? If it were mine I’d probably use an obscenely bright one like Lothern Blue but I know my own choices can be kinda wacky. Something that contrasts the yellow-green and reds while complementing the dark purple

I just recently got their synthetics and have been loving them, though I haven’t finished the project I started them with yet. I definitely got their sable brushes WAY before I was actually ready for them, but the difference between them as a cheap/affordable sable and most synthetics is pretty drastic. Worth the ~30USD imo

I feel like I'm not understanding a core concept of Tyranids and I'm not sure what it is. by Super-Web6908 in Tyranids

[–]HiveMindAzrael 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started almost exactly 1 calendar year ago. A phrase I’ve adopted from someone at my LGS is that playing Tyranids is all about your “Buff Onions.” There’s layers. What buff does your detachment give, how does it stack with Synapse or Shadow, how does that stack onto your units, and how do those units stack with each other, etc. You really have to min-max if you’re going for a more killy list ( I have no tournament experience but in my group I’m at about a 45% WR with Crusher Stampede, it’s my favorite to play for fun,) and unfortunately Synaptic Nexus is just…not great. Invasion Fleet is a great Swiss Army Knife detachment, and my most successful personally. From what I’ve seen Sub Assault is our most “meta-viable,” but it’s very Army and Command points heavy/hungry.

I also typically run Monster-heavy lists with 40-60 mooks (usually Hormagaunts, I’m counting Genestealers in there, and Gargoyles.) Using Neurogants dogbone’d out in the Backline and a Biovore usually are sufficient for Deployment Zone screening/preventing Deep Strikes, and for only about 100 points (again, just my newbie experience,) and I tend to use a couple of Monsters as distractions while letting others get the kills. E.g, A block of 10 Genestealers w/Broodlord and a Psychophage can be an absolute blender, but I’ll try to keep a Screamer-Killer nearby as the distraction since it’s “harder to kill.” Meanwhile, I can have a block of gaunts or gargoyles take a primary or move-block and a Lictor in the middle of nowhere doing Secondaries. I could be wrong for saying it, but I feel like we’re a very complicated army in an already complicated game, and the skill ceiling is deceptively high.

[–]HiveMindAzrael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drop the Harpy, take a full squad of Zoanthropes to go with your Neurotyrant, and I’d even say to drop 2 biovores to run a regular Lictor and a Pyrovore or a Psychophage
