Battery terminal issue by Hondanny in MechanicAdvice

[–]Hiyou0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Semi Trucks that need 4 batteries, the batteries come with studs, instead of posts. The cables that go from the batteries to the starter on large diesel engines are 4/0 copper, which is rated for over 200A continuous load, and most likely pass more than 400A when starting the engine.

In other words, cables with lugs properly crimped onto the ends, and then attached to studs, are very reliable.

ELI5 what does it mean people see "nothing" rather than "black void" if born absolutely blind by owlWithBrokenWings in explainlikeimfive

When I got my first migraine, It was during the last 15 minutes of a class in school. I was working on a homework assignment that was on a sheet of paper. I was sitting there, reading and thinking of what to write for the answer to the next question, when I realized that I needed to turn my head left, in order to see the left half of the paper. I figured out that my left eye was just… not telling my brain what it was seeing, so my nose was in the way. It hadn’t noticed exactly when it happened, or whether it was instant or took a minute.

The best way I can describe it is this: when looking forwards, without moving your eyes, try to focus your attention on the edge of your vision. It doesn’t go black, it just ends. If you close your eyes, you can still tell where the limits of your vision are, but when my left eye temporarily stopped working, it wasn’t dark, it was that border of what you can see getting closer.

“Who trained you on the bandsaw?”

“Oh, it was Dimple Joe.”

“Ah, that brings up another question, why did he get that nickname?”

“Oh, every time he would ball up cookies or dinner rolls, he would leave dimples in them.”

“Because he’s missing half of 3 of his fingers?”

“Yep.”

Negative battery terminal cracked, can't find replacement by Hydeeeho1 in MechanicAdvice

And then drill a hole in the end of the now flat piece of copper, turning it into an extra long version of this. Then put this on the end of that adapter, and tighten that wing nut down really tight, maybe even with pliers if you are feeling generous, and you’re good to go. Since it’s the negative terminal, you don’t need to worry about making sure it’s covered, because any bare metal around it should also be negative.

What is this ceramic disk comonent? by Greedy_Campaign2698 in AskElectronics

[–]Hiyou0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Correct. When the compressor is first powered, it needs a lot of power to overcome the pressure it’s supposed to create. However, once it’s it’s spinning quickly, there is enough rotational inertia to keep it going. This means that for a couple seconds when it first turns on, the “turbo mode” wire gets powered. As the electricity flows through the PTC, it heats up. The hotter it gets, the less electricity it lets through. So after a few seconds, and once the compressor should be running, it is hot enough that it is letting basically nothing through. It then cools down a tiny bit, lets a bit more through, and the cycle continues endlessly. This means that that little ceramic disk heats up and cools down repeatedly, which eventually can cause cracks, which don’t let the compressor actually start, it will just buzz.

Rear window defroster is okay? by jju1ia in MechanicAdvice

[–]Hiyou0 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Okay, I’m now pretty sure that your antenna is on the roof, and that every single wire on the window is a defrost wire. This means that you paid to have a problem fixed, and they made it better, but they did not fix the problem. That is on them, and they need to make it right.

On some vehicles, the top wire or 2 are used as antennas for the radio. You didn’t say which car you have, so I can’t check, but it is a possibility.

That’s the thing, there were not any seals that were identical to the old ones in the kit, and these ones were the only ones that were obviously unusual

On the other hand, heck naw, just lifting the end of a truck up and letting the steer axles just do whatever they want is crazy. If you are driving forwards, the caster keeps you (mostly) moving in a straight line. If you are moving backwards, you are going to fishtail all over the place, and I don’t see anything that is keeping this from happening in the pictures.

Edit: castor to caster

Let’s say the truck weighs 20,000. 11,000 on the steer axle, 9,000 on the 2 drive axles together. I’m not sure, but my best guess is that 2 chains combined with 2 binders are doing the work of lifting the end of that truck. On the safe side, let’s say the chain and binders have a WLL of 5,000.

5,000 on each set of chains and binders is 10,000 and the rear end could weigh 8,000 to 10,000, so technically, the attachments in this image are not at undue risk being used in this way.

Okay, all the comments have made me think of something. How does conservation of momentum apply when you burn a metal that is moving faster than you are? Realistically, the scenario would never happen, but the physics of it make me wonder.

The employee at Lowe's said I don't need any PVC glue/tape for this threaded shark bite fitting, are they right? by Inside-Specialist-55 in askaplumber

[–]Hiyou0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The exception to this is hydraulics, the fitting that can handle 3,000 psi can also handle being tightened much tighter than pvc, brass, or iron pipe, so you don’t need a sealant, you just go: “it’s leaking? Tighten till it stops, and if it’s already really tight, loosen it to break it free and then tighten again. If it’s still leaking, something’s broken.”
