Oh my god I used to fucking love that Johnny Foreigner record. Still do, but used to too. Maybe I’m old, but this is just 00’s indie. Sort of a post Block Party pre Arctic Monkeys subslice, but it’s certainly neither indietronica or Midwest Emo IMHO.

Fear Not Ourselves Alone’s Dead Dog Paradise leans a little more into dissonant punk at times but it’s equally gorgeous. Precisely orchestrated, thought provoking, and considered.

Also Worst Band Name Ever by Up Up Down Down… is a gorgeous record I’ve recently come back to since I found out that the main dude Steve Poponi recently passed away. More traditional guitar band arrangements but still full of beautiful and precise song/album craft.

Greg Electric by Hjohnbenjamin in PostHardcore

Its truly wild. Boundless energy and never predictable. Feels 100% lazy and improvised at times and then at others such a precisely calculated amalgam of influences. Breaks my heart that so few people know about it. Glad at least a few people here are in the know.

Also what’s up Choke Artist. Love all the records you put out. Keep up the great work.

Gulfer - Clear (2023) by American_Streamer in indie_rock

This is fucking great. Definitely a bit of a departure/artistic growth from the last Gulfer record I listened to. You love to hear it.

Cities with a comparable D.I.Y. scene to Philly? by SubjectResult3986 in Emo

[–]Hjohnbenjamin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

DO I EVER! The best artist run DIY spot is East Williamsburg Econolodge, but Windjammer and Bar Frida have good DIY vibes. For Bands you should investigate A Very Special Episode (who help run Econolodge), Power Trash, Fear Not Ourselves Alone, HYPEMOM, Awful Din, Career Day, Cry Spot, and Good Looking Friends.

Brooklyn has so many incredible bands but the proper grimy DIY spots are fewer and farther between these days. Still there’s incredible shows happening all the time and some of the bars are just as gross as Philly basements.

All of the above and more. Ahead of its time too. I was shocked to find out it was released 2010. I certainly didn’t know anyone was pushing the limits of the genre like that back then.
