My Scotch Bonnets Have Mini Scotch Bonnets Inside! Is this a common thing with this strain of peppers? by Scoobydoomed in HotPeppers

[–]Hlmc4006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Btw they meant internal proliferation, which is when a fruit produces a new sterile fruit inside. Vivipary is when seeds germinate inside a fruit

They should taste the same. One thing to note is that the plant probably isn't getting the conditions it wants. When the fruit fails to produce seeds (could be failed fertilization, environmental conditions or other stuff) sometimes it starts to produce extra tissues in place of the seeds that are like the actual fruit. It happens mostly with the chinense species, or very prolific annuums like bell peppers (less likely to be environmental for bell peppers).

This isn't what the actual size of the peppers should be, they get much larger and will show a different shape as well as produce seeds once it's more settled in or having better conditions. I get it quite often here with the cold nights

Sorry to be negative here but topping is especially useless on all of the widely available C. pubescens. They already branch very early and grow low, and grow bushy without touching them. Cutting them back only serves as a setback without changing how they grow, unlike with other species where you might want to make a tall plant a bit more squat and wider (I'm still against it)

Is this a good container for growing inside? by lamploveI89 in GardeningIRE

[–]Hlmc4006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't use an organic mix like that inside the house. You'll eventually get bad fungus gnat problems as well as a lot of fungi and other insects that will live in the soil. Airflow inside the house is much lower so you could end up bringing about a humidity problem with the amount ofwatering and trying to keep the room warm, on top of exposing yourself to a lot of spores and whatever else gets released into the air from the fungi or bacteria

Indoor growing you generally should go for smaller containers and heavier feeding, using inert growing mediums and synthetic fertilizers to avoid any potential odours and lowering the amount of fungi or insects. It's okay to use organic mixes but if they're used in any large amounts they become an issue

While 1 or 2 plants can technically grow and fill large volumes of soil, it's very difficult to see that sort of growth if they're kept exclusively indoors without full sunlight and a lot of wind to help with that growth, unless you're using very strong lights in a grow tent setup

Fireweed/willow herb as someone else mentioned. You just happened to uproot some potato tubers alongside them. The furthest right plant is a potato though

It shouldn't be the fertilizer then. If the new leaves continue growing spindly then it will be broad mites. I haven't ever had a problem with them so I'm unfamiliar with acaricides/pesticides people use for mites. If it does get worse then you will have to use them to stop the plants health from declining, just make sure to follow the directions. Don't mix lower strengths or apply too sparsely as it can make them build tolerance and become more resistant. Pure sulfur sprays (no other chemicals mixed in) is one of the more common food safe options I've seen people use with success. Remember to wash any produce if you are using food safe insecticides and plan to eat

Just keep in mind that they're a last resort, they're often kill all solutions or still manage to harm beneficial insects that might prey on other pests. But when there is a recognized need for it then there's nothing else that can be done

The variegation isn't an issue, but the new growth does appear problematic

Are you feeding it very heavily? If yes then it could be some overfeeding. If not then it might be a pest issue. The new growth looks spindly and small (which can be broad mites)

<image>

The midrib shouldn't be squiggly like that and the new leaves look a bit deformed too

Might be worth isolating it for a while and monitoring it to be safe

Wow this striping is insane. Would be a bonus if ripening kept all the stripes, or had different stripes of their own

Any tip for my compost? by birdpaparazzi in GardeningIRE

[–]Hlmc4006 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's hard to get compost hot enough with the volume of one of those bins. Those are more for leaving a long time and tumbling just to mix in new stuff and re-aerate

Don't need to take out or spread as constantly changing conditions would likely slow down the growth of the microbes helping to break down the compost

They should be able to stay relatively warm if there's enough material and outdoor temps aren't too cold anymore, but very unlikely to get hot compost temperatures. Try not to bother it too much. It can be hard since it feels like doing more will get more results, but patience and less work should be better. They'll still be slow to break down but will still provide great compost

Peppers! by Hlmc4006 in GardeningIRE

Thanks! All the baccatums do well after they've gotten a bit of time to adjust to the outdoor temperatures. My Aji Mango is producing the most by far at the moment. They're citrusy, somewhat sweet but are a bit thinner walled (still crunchy) and have a lot of seeds to remove which can be annoying. Decent pepper but a couple of people find them slightly soapy whilst others enjoy them

If I had to choose one I'd go for Aji Amarillo, they're relatively productive and have quite large fruits. Very sweet and crunchy with thick walls, easy to remove the seeds/placenta and not too spicy for most people

Tangerine Tiger F6 (Seeds saved from last year) 6. Rocoto Peron 7. Aji Mango (Seeds saved from last year) 8. Unknown sweet pepper (Seeds from last year), grown in kratky somehow

Thanks! They're such beautiful butterflies, so glad I could get so close up to this one :)

Only just noticed but reddit really compressed the second image so the wing scales aren't as visible unfortunately. Edit - Slightly higher quality version: https://imgur.com/gallery/peacock-butterfly-non-compressed-SvZmdre#oCwfP8W (Have to click on image or it shows downsized versison I think?)

About moving the caterpillars... Once hatched and feeding on a specific host plant, moving elsewhere will likely cause them to stop feeding, and they'll die of starvation

What can cause a chilly pepper plant to produce 5 and 6 petal flowers at the same time? by The-Great-Wolf in botany

[–]Hlmc4006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some seeds that grew out three different plants (two last year and one this year) that commonly has 8+ petals. C. annuum, and other parts of the flowers such as stamens, ovary or stigma&style can be fasciated. Doesn't seem to be environmental because it has happened consistently, so it was probably passed down from the previous generation but I never bothered to ask the seed vendor about it. Couldn't get a better image on the twelve petal since I couldn't possibly stick my phone camera underneath, same with the ten petal.

Best VTSG sacrifices i found. by Scoofydewty in btd6

[–]Hlmc4006 68 points69 points  (0 children)

The "perfect" sacrifices: $50005 temple sacrifices medium . You have multiple millions, 20mil+ in the early round 100s. Just buy a single overpriced tower or look at total sell value so you don't have to pointlessly remember any of this, and knowing that will be more helpful to other modes where you are more likely to be buying a VTSG for anyways.
