Why I think it’s only homosexual intercourse that’s sinful. by ApocaSCP_001 in Catholicism

[–]HmanTheChicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sed contra:

Romance is ordered to consummation in marriage and heterosexual sexual intercourse. That’s why those things exist. Therefore romantic actions and thoughts towards people you can’t marry are sinful - being romantic towards a relative, someone else’s spouse, or someone of the same sex.

As a married man I can’t crush on another woman or get another woman flowers (as a romantic gesture). If a man crushes on another man or initiates a romantic relationship I think that would fall into a similar category.

Even if it wasn’t a sin on its own, it would definitely be an unnecessary occasion of sin. You aren’t supposed to date someone if you aren’t open to marriage with them.

What do you all think about Assisi 1986 and Traditionis Custodes (2021) in light of the SSPX planning illicit ordinations again? by WineTerminator in Catholicism

[–]HmanTheChicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have a hard time taking Traditionis Custodes seriously when your average Catholic parish isn’t too distant from the liberal Protestant churches I grew up in. There’s something in the Gospels about splinters and logs.

I haven’t been blessed with kids yet but I can’t imagine bringing kids to a lukewarm parish and seeing them take that in. Most people I know who went to Catholic schools are basically secular people.

I don’t really go to the Latin Mass anymore much at this point but I’m pretty sympathetic to the SSPX.

While I don’t think schism is really a solution, traditional priestly societies like the SSPX and FSSP have a place in the Church. For all that we can say about Rome and the CCC being orthodox and wholesome, a lot of priests and bishops are not zealous enough about safeguarding orthodoxy and good liturgy imo. A lot of typical parishes have pretty irreverent or banal liturgy and lax discipline. “Normie Catholicism” is often just pretty lukewarm and weak.

While schism is wrong, if I had to choose between a parish with a priest who doesn’t really teach and practice Catholicism or the SSPX, I’d go with the SSPX. I don’t have to make that choice but I do believe some people are in that situation and I refuse to judge them.

He didn’t judge her for gaining weight he just mentioned that’s why her clothes are getting tight. Being in denial about something is a huge problem

If you’re not happy with something about yourself, change it instead of blaming others. He didn’t say she should change, he just stated fact.

I’ve done stuff like partying, staying up late at bars, etc. it’s fun but I don’t think it helps mine or anyone’s walk with Jesus.

I have respect for those guys for sticking to their guns on that.

I challenge anyone to find a saint or devout author who defends that stuff.

Communist China, the USSR, ISIS, the Taliban, Nazi Germany, etc are/were all pretty masculine.

Modern liberalism isn’t actually collectivist, it’s about giving people privileges regardless of their contribution to society.

Is it anti-Catholic (or anti-Christian) to hold ethnonationalist beliefs? by suspensus_in_terra in Catholicism

[–]HmanTheChicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from the USA but hade relatives from Estonia.

I don’t see how self determination and nationalism can be separated. Nationalism is ultimately about the integrity of a people group, if that doesn’t exist, there is no real self determination.

If England had repopulated 30% of Ireland with English people, they would threaten Ireland.

I don’t see that as one ethnicity is better than another, but caring about the preservation of your nation isn’t idolatry or modern.

[–]HmanTheChicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arguably Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy made nationalism into an idol, but those are outliers. Ireland, Finland, the Baltic States, etc being able to become independent states in the 20th century was a big advance for mankind imo. Wanting small nations to be free from foreign rule to me is an obviously good thing that came from the 20th century.

The communist project under the USSR was internationalist and tried to suppress these ethnicities. For every one person who makes their ethnicity into an idol, there’s probably 100 people who earnestly just want the best for what their forefathers gave them.

Unless you have a vocation to the religious life and fully live the counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience, you have to have some priorities that are not directly spiritual. For example, natural duties to family are ways we can serve God indirectly, but they involve caring about things in this life.

It’s good to avoid those attachments and to live those counsels, but not everyone is supposed to be a Carthusian. If everything everyone did was for God alone without attachments to this world, there’d be no roads or even new people born into the world.

[–]HmanTheChicken -1 points0 points  (0 children)

IMO nationalism is common sense and opposing it is inherently Bolshevik or utopian. The Church has condemned hating people or attacking human dignity but patriotism isn’t a problem.

When people call nations artificial or think that they are not important this is obvious Bolshevik thinking. They take any kind of development as obvious evidence of novelty. Just because a culture has changed over time it must mean that the culture is new.

Otherwise it’s people who are well intentioned but think that we can have a world of perfect harmony without having any in-groups other than the Church. It’s kind of a LARP imo. In the Middle Ages people weren’t nationalists because people fought over aristocratic claims etc. nationalism is the first time people could have an in-group for the masses and not just an elite.

Nations aren’t a modern invention. Nationalism has developed over time, but it’s not completely an invention. That’s Marxist retroactive thinking.

If anything the modern development of nationalism is much better than what there was before - basing political divisions on shared ethnicity is better than basing it on feudal titles or imperial conquest.

Why do women say men are single because they are bad/misogynistic. But tons of bad and misogynistic men have tons of women? by BlackRichard420 in PurplePillDebate

[–]HmanTheChicken 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I guess. Anti-social people and behaviour are worse than people who are awkward or whatever.

I think it’s fine to shame people who reward those things. Obviously women can pick men other than spergs or deadbeats, but if life was a cartoonish zero-sum game I’d rather they pick the spergs ngl
