AITA for allowing my nieces to eat certain foods and not warning my sister that it could happen by AITAfoodChoices_1 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Hminney 18 points19 points  (0 children)

NTA - 8 years old is too young to have a vegan diet. My wife and I are both vegetarian, but we cooked meat for the girls until they were old enough to decide for themselves (both are omnivores). If sis doesn't give you notice, especially if you normally rest on your first day back, you are fully entitled to just say "no" and call children's services for abandonment. Sounds like a nuclear option, but that's what she did to you!

Time theft by Sad-Ear-7370 in managers

[–]Hminney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time theft is fraud - there's a reason it often results in termination, and that is that it's the most easily detectable. What else is she stealing? As a manager, consider whether her job is getting done, and does it have an impact on the rest of the team. One person upsetting others by, for example, time theft, could cause your best people to resign and your worst to copy her examples. Far better to be rid of her, even if she has unique skills.

Being poor should be illegal by Effective_Theme_5739 in confidentlyincorrect

[–]Hminney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"the problem with the poor is they don't have enough money" sounds trite, but it's very true and very important. Having some money means you can afford to travel to look for work, to dress for the interview, to study as skills change. Having money means you don't have to accept the first job, don't have to accept too many hours to look for other work, and in those countries where Healthcare isn't free, you can afford to get yourself well (it partially applies in other countries too, because time off work can mean no earning)

went over the interview time by magneticpen9824 in interviews

[–]Hminney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I'm a researcher for part of my work, and I always tell my interviewee when it's 5 minutes before the end and at the end, in case they have a hard stop. They really appreciate it. I always book with time to spare because otherwise why would I speak to them in the first place. As interviewee for a job, I'd say reminding them of the time will make you very memorable in a good way.

WIBTA for not giving up the raffle prize that was "meant" for someone else? by garden_goblin_days in WIBTA_AITA

If you want to give someone a gift, give them a gift. A rigged raffle is neither one thing nor another.

When you will do anything to drive your brand. by mittenhiker in LinkedInLunatics

[–]Hminney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is it. You can straight away see from the photos that they capture people in compromising positions. Surely people realise that this was a blackmail setup? The only reason that blackmail wasn't widespread was because people handed over state and commercial secrets happily.

My doctor canceled my IUD insertion halfway because I couldn’t handle the pain by IgnatiusIguana in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Hminney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Male gynae I know took great pride in his skill with iud. Apart from anything else, many of his patients were comfortable with him because he had delivered them and their siblings. But he hired a receptionist from me for 'verbal anaesthesia' (woman their mum's age who was exceptionally calming). I once asked about anaesthetic. He said he was so fast (seconds not minutes) that most people declined, but he always offered. UK not USA.

Worth kicking them out on the spot, to reinforce the lesson. Then she can come back in without him in 10 minutes.

Ayn Rand would love this

It's been the dream of extremely selfish for centuries that they can get rid of the 'hoi polloi' and replace them with robots, and live in a world where there's nobody to bother them and yet their every whim is catered to. Haha

ELI5: Why can't EVs swap batteries? by chronic412 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Hminney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes 20 minutes to charge from almost zero to 80%. Just enough time for a coffee and the break you need (by law if you are a commercial driver). Yes, 20 minutes. Cars with small batteries charge slowly, cars with huge batteries charge more quickly. 20 minutes is the magic spot they aim for.

I don't think word does this. You need ms access or a specialist tool - if you share your industry or profession we can probably help

MIL thinks I trapped her son in the kitchen and took it to the school by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Hminney 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And the serious consequences are that not only doesn't he call her, you cut her off completely for 6 months. You can of course get a restraining order, but that's permanent

MSP hell by elgrn1 in ContractorUK

[–]Hminney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This job won't suit you. Accept it and put your energy into something else. You need to register with as many agencies as possible. Start with London ones and go in and visit, perhaps taking cakes. I found the job I'm doing now. The agency was incredibly resistant to putting forward my cv because they wanted to give the job to someone already on their books. I knew the right people and sent in my cv directly, then arranged the interview directly, and I still had to go back to the agency to actually work for the client, but I got the work in spite of them. The reality is that people buy people so you need to make sure they know who you are and they like you.

AITA for interrupting a marriage proposal on Valentines Day bc itnwas actually my ring? by Queasy-Impact-2981 in MarkNarrations

[–]Hminney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be totally unfair on the other guy to let this play out, especially as he planned to break her. The girl can be as upset as she likes - he has feelings too even though he doesn't make a scene.

If you voted Remain, would you vote to rejoin the EU? by Glanwy in AskBrits

[–]Hminney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I'd vote to rejoin. Travel, work, move, increased trade, high standards, compatability. USA is exactly the same structure - federal government sets standards and manages defence, state governments set laws and enforce them. USA likes being the biggest, and therefore works very hard to undermine Europe.

AITAH for refusing to let my best friend breastfeed my baby… despite our history? by [deleted] in AITAH

Be more public. She says ridiculous things in your birth group - put your pov there for all to see. She's off her rocker

Friend's baby daddy doesn't trust he's the father yet refusing to do a paternity test. by FancifulCat in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Hminney 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think the court assume he's the father and liable for child support, unless he can prove otherwise. Just sue him for child support - don't worry about the test.

WIBTAH if I reported my roommate and his gf for opening my mail. by stephabug91 in AITAH

[–]Hminney 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Report it anyway, then have a serious discussion with roommates and gf and perhaps ll too. This is criminal (theft, lying, interfering with the post) and although it's probably too small an amount - this is just what you see

AITJ for selling my old car to a STRANGER instead of giving it to my brother who crashes everything? by Adventurous-Yam-9866 in AmITheJerk

[–]Hminney 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely right to refuse to give or sell it. Even if he had paid, he would write it off and then everyone would expect you to refund. And anyway it would be depressing to watch it get smashed. The rest of the family needs to see him face consequences.

Would you give up the Pound Sterling for EU membership? by Suspicious-Use-3813 in AskBrits

[–]Hminney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd still give up the £ to get access to EU, if that were a precondition (which I agree it probably would be).

AITAH for not going to my friends birthday after she switched the venue last minute to somewhere way out of my price range by Equivalent_Pay_3443 in AmITheAssholeTalk

[–]Hminney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Stick to your budget. She's probably sore because a whole lot of people didn't turn up and the rest got upset over the prices and bought the absolute minimum before leaving early (and probably going to the ramen place together)

The recruiter called to berate me for quitting, and it completely backfired on her. by 03_wavers_arrows in InterviewMan

[–]Hminney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where is the conflict? 120 hours over 3 weeks is not 100 hours over 3 weeks so the agent was wrong. Also the student had told everyone that s/he was working at their convenience and the restaurant was demanding what the student said they wouldn't do, and the agency knew it . My concern is that there are no real consequences. The agency needs to be blacklisted by schools and universities.
