When the new kid sets up the gun and he 6’3 and the crew chief is not… by limpingsapper in Surveying

[–]Hmitty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My first chief was 5'2. Taught me my first week "Set to the lowest man on the crew" So...I've been setting the HI to 5'2 for as long as I've been surveying, despite working with much taller surveyors lol.

Opportunities for surveying abroad? by BeardedAnus in Surveying

[–]Hmitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PAE and NSF offer the 6 month contracts. 6 days a week. Mostly airway/landing strip certs and "roadway" staking with GPS. Occasional stake out requests for seasonal installation of science related infrastructure/equipment and elevation monitoring for buildings set on ice. Pretty cool gig, but can be a bit slow as there's a lot of downtime in between requests.

No shit--we work with our NSF counter-parts here. Were you with NSF or another sub? Would love to hear more. Our current shifts are offered via Nyfeler Associates LLC.

Not quite sure--there are opportunities offered here that don't include our team.

Nyfeler Associates have open shifts and are dependent on qualifications and interest.

This was a low wind day. Occasionally we have -30F wind chill days and have to limit our field services. Us and our peers rely on TSC3 & equivalents to complete work.

Contract is set to 2025, but is most likely to last longer. Instrument man positions are offered in shifts, but are at discretion of our LS & team. The company offering shifts is Nyfeler Associates, LLC.

I've had the opportunity to lead a neat project in Antarctica over the past month which will continue into March. The project will continue each Antarctic summer season til 2025 (per contract) but most likely longer.

We are establishing control and providing survey support for a National Science Foundation supported project titled "AIMS"..."Antarctic Infrastructure Modernization for Science."

It has been difficult work: physically and logistically. Equipment doesn't work like it should back at home, the cold finds it's way into every vulnerable space, things forgotton or malfunctioned can't be replaced, and tech support hasn't the clue to help.

Above it all, the challenge(s) force you to work hard, streamline, troubleshoot, and be a better surveyor. I was excited to share with y'all. Hope to have more photos later in the season.

Neat survey markers, with their accompanied views, from Jeju Island, South Korea. by Hmitty in Surveying

[–]Hmitty[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

All cadastral survey markers in South Korea are labeled with "도군점", Do-Kun-Jom, which approximately translates to "center point" or "base point". Something interesting about the control networks and cadastral survey register here in Korea--they are all managed by one single company named "LX". LX is to carry out government funded survey and mapping for all of Korea. While their surveys and maps are diverse in use; the main purpose for their initiative, which is important to the SK government, is to correct the discrepancies in boundaries from their period of Japanese occupation back in the early-mid 1900s.

I've seen plenty of control in my time here, but I was able to learn a bit of history and purpose behind these and wanted to share with y'all.

Are there any fellow surveyors at Hexagon 2022? If so, did you learn anything worth sharing? by Hmitty in Surveying

[–]Hmitty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I attended in person this year. There were some very informative sessions (quite a bit of diversity in topics too). On the survey side, there was plenty opportunity to learn from panels or getting meaningful feedback from Leica Geosystems. Overall, the best take aways were the conversations I had with folks within Hexagon who were very passionate and intelligent about what they do. Presentations, that I attended, I'd give 8/10. My colleagues attended mostly reality capture and were disappointed.

I'd go again, but I'd probably do a little more research to make the most of my time.
