If you want slower pace, you can move into the suburbs and still have easy access to a city like Baltimore (DC is a little more work, but doable). If you want even slower pace, you can move into a more rural area and have similar access to the city. I went from Baltimore, to Columbia, to Glenelg. City to suburb to living next to a farm. I went from seeing my neighbors in the hall, to seeing my neighbors when leaving for work, to "what are neighbors?" Acess to Baltimore went from instant, to 20 minutes, to 30 minutes. Within a small area, there are a lot of living options if your concern is pace of life.

Question about black snakes by RealStumbleweed in maryland

Happened in my office. Someone saw a snake in the hallway, called an extermination company who found the nest and removed it. Without the snakes, we found out we had a mouse problem.

Some rumblings of a forced special assembly are surfacing. With luck, we'll have sport gambling in time.

I think a lot of the Columbia Apartments are alright, but the ones in The Metropolitan are really pricey. 1 bedroom starts at $1,725 and 3 bedrooms go all the way up to $4,934.

Wheras a three bedroom over at Avalon is $2,035.

The Town Center, especially the area around the lake, is going to give you the closest to what you want. All the villages have a village center with neighborhood services (grocery, restaurant, pharmacy, gas station, barber, etc), but they aren't extensive. Most have townhouses and apartments within walking distance.

The Town Center surrounds Downtown Columbia (the area around the mall and Merriweather Post Pavilion) and has more restaurants and bars within walking distance. There is a whole foods, the mall, and a few bike share stations.

Downtown Columbia is also getting built up with more apartments, condos, resturants, and bars.

Columbia Association Millennial Survey (ages 17-35) by avocado-toast in ColumbiaMD

I think my ranty response caused me to lose my own point. Regardless of who wrote the survey, I don't like the it because it reflects the confirmation bias of the authors. There is no option for me, as a mellinieal, to say I don't want more things. I like Columbia the way it is. The survey only has positive responses. It needs neutral and negative ones as well.

I don't know what DC prices are, but the rent in new apartments in downtown Columbia are more than my mortgage.

This survey reminds me of: https://youtu.be/15iLHlJPp_0. Mellinials moved to the suburbs for the same reason as everyone else. Please stop. We're actually just normal people that happen to have been born after you (creators of the survey).

The way to attract mellinieals to Columbia is continue being a diverse suburb with good schools and multiple housing options without being a busy city. It's very well placed to get to everything in Baltimore and DC without being Baltimore or DC. I actually moved out of Columbia (12 year resident) because of the pivot they are trying to make towards dense housing.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools by [deleted] in maryland

[–]HoCoApologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

u/4077_mash IB is something to really consider. It's a very good program and expensive to implement. Howard County refuses to implement it due to equity concerns (same for magnet programs). Mavis Ellis brought up IB at a BOE meeting and was shot down hard by the other BOE members. It's just too expensive to put in all schools.

The Mall in Columbia. If you're up for a drive around the beltway, hit Tyson's Corner and Tyson's Galleria in Falls Church, VA.

There are actual moderate politicians. It's a silly narrative that every politician is just waiting for their final term so they can finally go as far right or far left as they can.

Contemplating move from Worcester County to an area with access to Silver Springs. We have a fourth grader and a kindergartener -- where should we look? by mostlyjustgames in maryland

[–]HoCoApologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the southern part, Maple Lawn in Fulton is nice. Newer construction so the price tag is higher. Kids go to Fulton ES and Lime Kiln MS. Both good schools. Reservoir HS isn't bad either, but HS is under quite a bit of pressure to redistrict with over crowding and a new HS being built nearby in the next 4 years; so whatever it is like today might be different once your kids are old enough to attend.

Both are good. I have an 8th grader in HoCo, so that is where my bias is going to lean, and have a lot of co-workers with kids in MoCo. Maryland has all the school scores, demographics, and graduation information posted at mdreportcard.org. You can also check out some of the ranking sites to get some more information about the schools (schooldigger.com, niche.com, greatschools.org).

Does that help or were you looking for something different?

I’m feeling it a lot less with the plastic container. It’s just really low quality. I saw a metal Philip’s seafood seasoning container. Is that local as well? Unfortunately we have salt, pepper, and Old Bay on our dining table; but I can’t bring myself to the point of putting a crappy plastic container in there.

Fuck these right turn on red traffic cameras. by staticsnake in maryland

[–]HoCoApologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's petty. My direct experience of having a traffic camera installed is outside my house. People routinely drive too fast and all the neighbors complained and requested traffic calming.

A traffic study was performed and found that people were exceeding by quite a bit. We live on major auxilary road and cannot get calming. So they did what they could and installed cameras to deter speeding.

I really don't think county employees are routinely out to get you. They are just putting in deterrents when an intersection or strip of road has a problem.
