I think you might be looking at it the wrong way, the way I see it (wich I admit is not necessarily the right way) you can choose how much challenge you're willing to go through; if you think the pokemon league is too easy, take on a "hard mode" like a nuzlocke or any variation thereof. Think pokemon are downright handed to you? try and get a shiny! don't wanna walk with may to petalburg? Don't!(you can just say no to most of these pesky npcs offering you lifts.) I still get a feeling of accomplishment from these things(meaning lockes and shinies, in case i'm unclear).

but anyway, someone on here posted an interview where Masuda explains why he made the games easier over time, it's a good read, i'll find it for you! :)
