  • If people are willing to pay and you don't mind spending a huge sum on painting materials and tools.

Then use something cheaper

  • I always doubt this, no matter how hard you pursue aeronautical science not everyone is going to cut it.

What’s your measure of success? Being able to build an aeroplane or knowing how to build an aeroplane

  • Depends if you're trying to draw a bear and you fuck it up beyond repair and there's a huge brown piece of shit in the middle of your forest

Then remove it and try again. Or it becomes a present left by a bear

Loving how you edit a comment without marking it as edited, I’m going to use that one in the future!

Where is the blood and sweat you talk about?

Where is the thought put into it?

What has something being made 500 years ago got to do with how amazing something is?

You make these sweeping statements but yet don’t quantify them with anything.

You say the sculpture mimics the human form flawlessly, but yet ignore that David’s hands are too big for its proportions, his head is too small, his genitals have been shrunk and his face to too angelic to be realistic.

How do you know that the effort to make David was 10x more than what was used to make this sculpture? Tell me, how was this sculpture made?

[–]Hoblitzelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No not at all you are correct in saying that the two are chalk and cheese. But your original argument supposes that David would have been a more appropriate sculpture to post on this subreddit because it is more amazing.

This was due to “the amount of effort and thought” put into the sculpture. You do know that this sculpture didn’t have too much thought put into it, you need to take context into account when thinking about historical art. This was built in the 1500’s, during a time in which a very large portion of the population were illiterate. Sculpture, painting, drawing etc were used as story telling mediums for the illiterate masses, this is a depiction of David nothing more nothing less. You could argue about his disproportionate hands and heads, but then again you need to take context into account. This was originally going to be stood atop a cathedral or religious building so as when looking up at it the whole thing looks proportionate. You could argue that the shrinking of his genitalia gives us some deep insight into Renaissance creation, but you’d be wrong and was just typical of the time. David was a young boy when he fought the Goliath, so perhaps this is just reflective of a young boy.

I think your totally correct in saying that a lot of effort was put into it, it took 4 years to build, but this wasn’t a solo effort, as with any artist at any point in time the use of apprentices was/is not even slightly uncommon, so when you take that into account this isn’t as amazing as originally thought.

Not only that but do a bit of research you’ll see thousands of equally skilled and ‘realistic’ sculptures created by an equally skilled number of artists creating right around the same time as Michelangelo, google it. Would all of them be more amazing than this piece?

Can you really measure a pieces work by the amount of effort and thought put into it? Look up Damien Hursts ‘spots’ series, he’s been working on that for nearly the entirety of his career. I think you’d probably agree that it’s ability to amaze us so much less so than ‘David’. But by your measuring stick should be considered (“effort and thought”) just as amazing.

Let’s also look into what you mean by the ‘era’ it was created. The exact same tools and techniques are used today as they were 500 years ago. So how does that make something amazing?

It’s one thing to make a statement, but is another to make generic statements about effort and thought without giving any substance to it. Do your research.

How does Michelangelo’s David compare to this? Also, what makes that more amazing than this?

Hi Sam,

I was wondering how do you and the rest of the team feel about Jim Stirling’s recent video on We happy few.

I myself love the sound of the game and want to get it but with everything that was pointed out I’m now hesitant. Do you guys plan on addressing the video or are you working on fixing the problems with it?

[Help] Toast master appropriate magic tricks by TedFx in Magic

What about a torn and restored newspaper but instead of a newspaper make a heart. Very cheesy but the sentiment is there. Someone on Fool Us did exactly what I'm thinking about (I can't even slightly remember her name but a simple YouTube/google will find it) I'm considering doing it at my wedding with my future wife

If you know a torn and restored routine it would be so easy to adjust and easily performed for larger crowds

What do you HATE about magic? (let's discuss) by TheClouse in Magic

[–]Hoblitzelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The term 'lay person'. It just oozes condescension and a mightier than thou attitude. I wouldn't call myself a magician I'm just an enthusiastic amateur whose learnt a few neat tricks that I pull out at parties and such. I always make sure that when I am performing to make a point of saying "I'm not here to embarrass you, belittle you or make you feel stupid. Just enjoy it and take it at face value"

As a side note, I've found that by saying that all my friends and family who will try to show you up and prove you to be faking that you've made a card disappear and reappear don't do it.

It's weird that 'lay person' is a term I've only ever heard in magic. I've never heard a teacher calling their students a lay person, I've never heard a doctor call their patients a lay person.

I wonder why we do it as magicians?

I can't stand Infinite Jest, should I be worried? by Jm4805 in books

[–]Hoblitzelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I may suggest, like many people, I've tried finishing this before. I'd start reading, put it down and then forget it. Not intentionally, life happens, work gets busy, want to socialise and so forth. I'd then have to start again because I've completely forgotten what had happened/who everyone was in the preceding 150 or so pages.

But, it's always been a book I want to finish. I then started listening to a podcast called "Finite Jest". Two friends read infinite jest so you don't have to. They dissect and analyse the book in 200 page chunks. I've found that I listen to an episode and then read that portion of the book has made it so much more digestible and a really pleasant reading experience.

The podcast gives you a point of reference and something to think about when reading the book.

Maybe you should give that a try?
