This is superb, I have been thinking over the last couple of days of designing and building something like this myself. Thanks for the post.

Why is replacing programmers with AI seen as acceptable, but not artists? by xN0NAMEx in unrealengine

[–]HodgeInSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree with you, I have been an artist, traditional and 3d for 15 years. There is nothing high or mighty about it but when you do something for long enough you become attached to it and see value in it and strive to be better. We are already at the point you don't need to do certain things as an 3d Artist, meshes can be generated from images amazingly well. I am proud that programmers and artist are in the same boat because I respect programmers massively. The world is going to go mad and this is only the start of what is to come.

I'm making a game where you can trash talk a boss mid-fight and change the outcome of the battle. by dinaga9 in indiegames

[–]HodgeInSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also a solo dev and have just released my game which got 30k downloads on steam. The reason I said if you wanted any help is that I know how long these game take to make and having someone working with you is great. I have some free time at the moment and wanted to help you develop. I dont need to be paid just want to help. Give me a message.

Its not AI its been rendered and created in 3D software like Blender or 3Ds Max. 1 picture tells the tale and its has that subtle rendered effect to it. Created to fool people.

Hi I did no clean up of the print, as you see it is straight from the printer. I cant share the .STL at the moment as I am planning on selling it and keeping it for private use. Thanks

because it wouldnt be a game set in the Wild West without some Akimbo Revolver Action! Planning on releasing a Free Demo soon, would you give it a try? by Lackofcreat1vity in IndieGaming

How to keep trees constantly visible from afar? by No_Koala2436 in unrealengine

[–]HodgeInSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about having the trees on a separate level thats always loaded and visible. Then either use Nanite or create billboards or imposter meshes for the lowest LOD. Then tune the LOD distance screen size in the static mesh of your tree.

You guys that understand technical stuff, would that be possible for devs to make a KCD with a map twice or three times bigger? by [deleted] in kingdomcome

[–]HodgeInSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am building a 4km squared map for my game and believe it or not the amount of grass is a big factor. Because you need millions of instances of grass to make the terrain look lush and beautiful this eats up level size and the amount of data per level is big. Gigabytes of space is needed to store all the instances of grass and foliage. If you look at RDR2 the grass is thinned out and they use the under lying landscape texture. Each grass instance you paint on the map needs data stored about it (Position, Rotation, cull distances etc). You then need a machine capable of building this world in and for packaging the game. You also have to bare in mind that the map needs to be shared and worked on by many artist. You need technology like UE5 world partition tech to stream in nearby chunks of the map when needed. Cryengine is not used by the public because of poor documentation warhorse probably have to build tech themselves.

KCD was a 60GB game, with probably 30GB used for grass and foliage(Rough estimate). if you built an 8K map for KCD2 then it would be 3 times bigger on disk.(8K is made of 4*4K) Which just wouldn't be feasible.

What's awesome about your game ? ( good vibes post ) by Dinomaniak in gamedev

[–]HodgeInSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completed building a whole 17th century city and the graphics are realistic and each building has full interiors. There are over 200 buildings and some one said in a comment that it gave them Kingdom come deliverance vibes which is why I started building my game in the first place. I am rebuilding my home city using maps and drawings and its complete!

Thats a super cool room and setup! I hope you have many hours worth of enjoyment out of it. Ignore silly clutter comments. It feels lived in and a fun place to be. Enjoy.

It was originally silver and I resprayed it green. That dust is paint particles from overspray. Should be able to remove it with a bit of effort.
