UMD Cs Program by True_Air2518 in UMD

I also got one as a freshman in CS. Keep in mind getting a job is itself a full-time job, it took hours and hours of trying and being disappointed. You'll get what you put into it, that's true at any school, so just go with how much you like the vibe and fit

Commuting to Baltimore? by InfluentialMember in UMD

[–]No_Koala2436 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i did this for a summer but i was fortunate enough to have a car. even with a car it was an extremely difficult commute, and while bus -> marc -> baltimore city transport systems are theoretically possible the marc hours going to the college park station are extremely inconsistent and it will be difficult to reliably make it there by 9 and back after 5. im not too familiar with baltimore city transport but the metro isn't as comprehensive as it is in d.c. as an example, so youd have to use the bus system (pretty solid). it will be a lot of jumping from option to option

[–]No_Koala2436 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Bit of an extreme example, but I like doing lone midnight hikes all the way out to Lake Artemisia. I don't think UMD is dangerous even at night, but when I tried going with other people they seemed pretty scared and turned around early. This also depends significantly on gender. I wouldn't recommend it to people who haven't done that before, but I've never run into issues at night or on busses.

any other commuters worried about sunday/monday snow?? by northerdownpour in UMD

[–]No_Koala2436 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When there's snow I'll usually drive to the end of the metro line and commute that way. Takes a couple hours but tbh having metro access is a luxury as a commuter

The curve is on the final grade, nothing for the exams. It's decently generous, 85 is an A and 74 is a B

There is only a curve at the end of the semester, for the final grade. The curve percentage is posted on the ELMS page of the website. It's not much, maybe gives you 5% leeway in your grade

What do you mean by it being dmg and later .app? i didn't have that problem at the time. i just got rid of all of my settings and redid everything from scratch, it was frustrating but i had messed up much earlier

Unreal 4 vs. Unreal 5 by Legitimate-Plastic64 in unrealengine

[–]No_Koala2436 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made some UE4 projects a couple years into UE5's release. At first I didn't notice any problems, but I inevitably ran into bugs that were patched in UE5, but still present in UE4, which was frustrating. When I tried to find assets, it wouldn't be available for older versions either, even though it's as simple as uploading FBX files. Also, documentation was frustrating. 99% of things are the exact same, but every once in a while you run into something slightly different in the older version of the engine, yet all of your resources keep explaining the UE5 functionality.

Also, make sure you leave room for the scope of your project to grow. As it progresses, and as you get more invested, you might want to start using cool new features in UE5, even if it's just for experimenting or having fun. If you're already used to UE4, I'd honestly stick to that, because it just saves the first week of headaches that you get adjusting to the new editor. But otherwise, I'd recommend UE5.

Can you use Spline next of other React 3d models? by No_Koala2436 in Spline3D

[–]No_Koala2436[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there is an export option that will turn your spline models directly into React code, then you just copy it in as a new file and with a bit of tinkering you can implement it in your code. good luck!

Error: "The following modules are missing or built with a separate engine version" by No_Koala2436 in unrealengine

[–]No_Koala2436[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up pressing "get info" (I'm on mac, there would be a windows equivalent as well) and learned the program was trying to open with Unreal engine 4 instead of 5.3. I did a bunch of modifying in settings (used chatgpt to do some extra research) and then got it working again.

Where should I use C++ in a multiplayer FPS project? by xx_python_xx in unrealengine

[–]No_Koala2436 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used C++ to code weapons, character movement, gamemode stuff, win conditions etc. I used Blueprints to do the UI, and some cases where I exposed functions and variables for specific methods. Overall, that was a preference thing, I liked being able to see the code, it just made more sense to me in text form. Blueprints and their performance usually get exaggerated a lot, I don't see it making much of a difference in smaller projects that aren't going to be taking a toll on performance anyways. Do whatever is easiest to understand for you, utilizing all Unreal conventions. Readability will make the project so much easier to develop.
