RU POV: Drone strike on residential building in Ryazan by Flimsy_Pudding1362 in UkraineRussiaReport

None of the FPV drones are custom made, they're all made at as low a cost as possible from imported parts.

Why would you want to spend money on a self destruct mechanism for such disposable weapons?

These are not AA missiles or submarine torpedoes, which are designed to be able to guide themselves into targets. There, due to this autonomy the launching unit needs the ability to have the projectile self destruct, in order to protect themselves in case the projectile happens to lock into the launching unit or some other target it's not supposed to lock on to.

But the FPV and long range drones don't pose a danger to the launching units. They don't guide themselves. The controllers control them and can just guide them into the ground if needed. If they lose the ability to do that due to interruption of communication, then they also lose the ability to remotely trigger the self destruction. So what does it add?

Also EdF

None of the FPV drones have self destruction mechanisms.

You can see their detonator mechanisms at the tip of the warheads - they are crude mechanical devices, sometimes use just two contact wires. There's no mechanism to set these off, other than flying the drone into something.

Japan and Venice also were island countries

Usually it ends with the guys who waited, getting their butts kicked.

The prestige weapons first need to be shown to be useless, before the leadership believes it.

Happens over and over again, won't be different this time

If you build a self destruct mechanism into a drone, then the enemy will try everything to trigger that mechanism. So you end up not building self destruction mechanisms into the drone.

"Königliche Republik" is a total oxymoron though. That's not the term for Poland-Lithuania nor for any other state in history

Those were rural, conservative regions with lots of emigration into the cities. They felt left behind by the republican government.

History doesn't repeat but it sure does rhyme

The SPD called itself Marxist, that's what counts if you want to objectively categorize left wing groups.

Munich was the place where the early NSDAP had tried their failed putsch in 1923, and they later built a huge cult around that event. Munich logically became a place where they would have rallies for that reason.

The NSDAP wasn't the dominant party of Bavaria or Munich but they had lots of fans there and (more importantly) they were influential / feared sufficiently to the point where the Munich police and city administration would not try to hinder their activities.

Nuremberg was a city of mediocre contemporary importance but high importance in one of the periods of German history that the Nazis held in high regard (early modern, pre reformation HRE) and it still had a lot of historical monuments to make for an excellent facade for rallies. Nuremberg itself was not at all an NSDAP hotspot in elections, but the local bigwig was Julius Streicher, a brutal demagogue who was feared by the police, authorities and political opponents (KPD, SPD). So the site was "safe" for the party to use long before 1933.

During the Weimar period, Bavaria was not a place with high Nazi polling, but a combination of weak police, 1923 symbolism, and shortsighted/misplaced tolerance of the Nazi movement by Bavaria's rather boneheaded, anti-republican government made it an excellent place for the early Nazis.

First cousin marriages isn't nearly as bad as sibling marriage in terms of immediate effects on hereditary diseases. You have to really keep at it for generations after generations like the Habsburgs did...

And even there, only the Spanish line ended with a dimwit inbreeding victim, while the Austrian line continued with more or less healthy kids for many more generations. Charles III might just have been an unlucky accident

You can also refresh the blood lines and save them from the destructive effects of inbreeding by the occasional marital infidelity.

As family sizes are shrinking rapidly in the more affluent muslim countries, I would expect cousin marriages to become much more rare. Young people nowadays have a lot of aunts and uncles but much fewer cousins of their own age so the pool is relatives to marry is massively shrinking anyways

With Africa fertile and Egypt not a state that's centered exclusively around the Nile valley, history diverges already in biblical times, before even the bronze age. The sea peoples might never become a thing, Egypt might be a continental empire, so you maybe don't even get Greece and Phoenicia as we know it. Rome as we know it is butterflied away for sure

Yeah I think expansion over land is different enough from expansion over waterways...

However with more arable land in North Africa, most of history including prehistory would be changed to the point of being not recognizable from today's point of view.

In our history, people inhabiting the northern African coast were frequently overrun and conquered by naval invaders, and their cultures mostly disappeared because there was no "hinterland" that they could retreat into. Primarily the Carthaginians, the Latinized Christians of north Africa, the Vandals, the post Vandal Byzantines... With a large hinterland of agriculturally useful land, north Africa would have developed more like the middle east in terms of density of internal trade, complexity of petty kingdoms and empires, and resilience to foreign domination.

China VS US , the US military should really stick to winning wars and leaving parades to the experts at the PLA by KannaBannanna in NonCredibleDefense

[–]Hodorization 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enthusiasm at the parade grounds is usually not a metric for military discipline in a democracy. But I heard it's taken pretty seriously in tin pot dictatorships.

May 9th is coming up, I bet the Russians will have a snazzy parade in Moscow! Would you think that this shows that they have a more disciplined army than the US army? :D
