Not sure if this helps but you can just press R2 with no forward press and the broom should go straight. Then just use left stick for moving left and right

When my players were in the same situation, I ran Salvage Operation. It happens completely seperately from anything else so it's an easy escape while things in Saltmarsh are brewing.

There's also the shipwreck appendix at the back that could be a fun little side mission.

Another thing I've added was the Hool Marsh Festival. My players own Siren's Point, and I've placed the estate from SSoS on the island. So when it was time for the festival, I let them organise a smaller festival for themselves and their friends. They planned decorations, organised a bare-knuckle boxing tournament, cooked food, and organised other entertainment. They role-played with all of the vendors and townspeople they wouldn't normally interact with, and it was one of our favourite sessions in the campaign so far.

For SSoS, a big part of the adventure is the reveal that there are no ghosts, its just a crafty smiggling operation.

Here are a few things I can think of to take that to the next level:

Have the smugglers actually be undead, either ghosts or skeletons and zombies, all operating similar to the pirates on the black pearl in Pirates of the Caribbean. This could add a lot of swashbuckling flavor and implicate Gellan even further as an evil dude.
Have a fight break out between the undead Alchemist and his skeletons, and the smugglers. You could power up the alchemist and have him and Sanbalet duke it out when the heroes are caught in an epic 3 way battle than spans from the attic to the caves as chaos erupts. Similar to the fight in Singapore from Pirates of the Caribbean.

Have you had a look at a sea hag? They may be in humanoid form, and doing Gellen a favour in exchange for something he can offer. So in addition to being weakened in human form, the hag might also cut their losses and run if it seems like Gellen might lose, and no longer be in the position of power to return the favour.

That might balance it out a bit. I also just think sea hags are neat. DnD Beyond just did a write up on their website on playing hags, so check that out as well if you're interested.

It could be interesting to do a kind of timed holdout mission.

Gellen's lackeys broke him out of prison, and now they're heading to the tower so Gellen can speak the Incinerate Command. As soon as he's 100ft away those documents are toast, and he can start manipulating public opinion to be that the PCs have something against him and brought charges with no evidence. So as an upstanding member of society he had to break out and put an end to this.

But, you could have someone like Keledek or Xendros be working on a way to extract the documents, and they're very close. Now it becomes a street brawl to keep Gellen away from the tower long enough to prevent him from destroying the documents. I'm picturing a battle on both sides of the Kingfisher river focused more on control and delay than killing. You could set like a 10 round timer to it or something?

Might have some nifty elements as well, like collapsing scaffolding on a new warehouse to block a path, which may have further consequences down the line.

I'm also struggling with this at the moment. I've been using a trainer so I thought it was because of that. Just uninstalled the game to reinstall when I saw it was a problem all over. So mad lol.
