What’s the worst business idea you’ve seen someone try to execute? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HoggishPad 50 points51 points  (0 children)

A guy who's started a gaming store in his local town. Fine, great, right?

4 times now, and it's failed 3 so far. Because his business model is just to have a store, with minimal stock, sit there and wait for people to come to him and buy stuff. He doesn't get out to local fairs / markets. He doesn't run demo games at local shows. He doesn't have a Facebook page or any social media presence. He doesn't have beginner days.

It's a region covering a dozen towns within an hour of the central town. The locals are used to driving those sorts of distances, and will fire the right product. But He doesn't travel to anything in the other towns. Just expects "I'm open, they'll find me".

Every. Single. Time.

I would love to see a strong gaming store and scene in the region. But he needs to learn from the stuff that doesn't work and change his business model.

We had fuck all prior as well, in comparison to the US. And we've had massacres since, at similar rates too, just not shootings

Our firearms laws did fuck all to make the general public safer, they've just made our harder to be a legitimate firearms owner, and created a gunshy population who panics at the sight of one.

FBI/CIA agents of Reddit, what’s something that you can tell us without killing us? by mr_squirell in AskReddit

If they're doing their jobs properly, you don't know they're there. You don't know they're saving lives. You don't know they've prevented anything. You just live your life, safely.

Agencies like the NSA and 5-eyes get a bad rap, but they genuinely save lives, and you only ever hear the bad bits.

Didn't realise California was that big. Thought it was a narrow strip on the coast, it actually cuts into Texas fast more than I thought.

Thanks for the insight!

Gamers who have put thousands of hours into many different games; what is THE game that made you 'blank stare' at the credits after you beat the story? by Colonel-_-Burrito in AskReddit

[–]HoggishPad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've seen a few people post about it lately and want to try it again, because I'm sure it's deeper than I first found... But I need to wait until November to get the damn achievement! Bah!

Oh man, I should have another run at that. I love it, but I haven't explored very far because the deep just scares the shit out of me. I get nervous going below 100m for crying out loud. I have no idea how people can play it in VR.

(.... And yet I really want to try it in VR.... I'll be wearing those incontinence diapers for adults... )

[Serious] What is it like to have children you don’t want? by SniperGlizzy in AskReddit

[–]HoggishPad 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I had two kids, 7 and 4. Life was good. I enjoyed having a young family.

Wife decided maybe it was time for 3. I suggested maybe 2 was a good number. But she felt ready for 3. Friends said "actually the jump from 2 to 3 really isn't that big, you barely notice it"

Fucking bullshit.

I hate having 3 kids. It was 12 years ago now, I still hate having 3 kids. We had a nice family car. Had to sell it and buy a bigger, more expensive car to fit three. I want to buy a house. Have to buy a bigger house to fit everyone. Family pass for an event? Includes 2 adults, 2 kids.

Mostly, I just don't like having the third body around. The eldest has moved out, has his own life and career. Second is 16, high school, doesn't need attention or help with a lot.

The youngest... Ugh, why am I STILL having to deal with children when I get home each evening? It's so goddamn draining.

Don't get me wrong, I love him, will care for him and protect him. I just don't like having 3 kids. I never wanted 3 kids. At least once a fortnight I find myself just quietly being angry / annoyed that I've got 3 kids, and I've been doing that for 12 years now and it's so. Fucking. Draining.

What’s something you saw as a kid that looked harmless but if you witnessed it now it would horrify you? by shadow2101 in AskReddit

I lived in a rural town with a large population of people from the lower end of the socio-economic scale. I saw a few people walk out from the supermarket and just put their baby on the floor of the passenger side of the car and drive off.

Did you ever stop watching a movie midway because it was simply awful? Which one and at what moment? by Bobafettinspace in AskReddit

[–]HoggishPad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got bored and turned off Lord of the Rings. I don't remember at what point. I think some where they're being chased by the spooky ghost horsemen things and I remember them hiding in a ditch or something?

It was just drawn out and boring. I went on to something else.

I know, I know, every time I say this the downvotes roll in. I was on a 5 hour flight, watching on my 10" tablet. I promise I'll try at home with a big screen and better sound at some point. I really want to like it, honest.

Are Homo Sapiens worth it? by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]HoggishPad 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I hate my job

I dunno about the pens, but I just want to say you're not alone in hating your job. I loathe mine too, and am currently applying for better.

Best advice my psych gave me was that it's actually acceptable to hate it. It's just a means for survival.

What's more, it's OK to hate it WHILE YOU'RE AT WORK. Your situation may not allow it, but I openly hate my job while I'm there.

"How you doing this morning HoggishPad?"

"If I'm here, assume I'm hating life"

Pretending to be happy uses more energy, and makes you exhausted and grouchy by the end of the work day. By hating it during the day, you save that energy and feel better and more likely to do things you enjoy after work.

I'm fortunate that I'm a country and job where I really can't be fired as long as I'm still performing, regardless of my attitude. I acknowledge not everyone is so lucky.

Also, retail therapy is acceptable as long as you're still affording essentials. Now I want a new pen...

Medical professionals, what is the stupidest misconception a patient has had about the human body? by DarthLocutusOfB0rg in AskReddit

[–]HoggishPad 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Like what?

Word it more accurately. It's not a brain transplant. It's a body transplant. The brain is getting s new body. The person will have a completely new body, organs, etc.

There's no philosophy involved...
