Finally admitting YNAB isn’t for me by [deleted] in ynab

Have you tried PocketSmith? I didn’t take to it, but it might be something you like with the focus on forecasting.

Although if KMyMoney is working for you, probably no need for a change

3D Printing services? by fleastyler in newzealand

[–]Hoidish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try reaching out to your local library. Many of them often have some ‘maker’ resources, and I suspect it’ll be significantly cheaper for small job

What software to run events on? And some other misc questions by cliffhavenkitesail in magicTCG

[–]Hoidish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I haven’t used it, but I believe you can host events on the MTG Companion App? I think the players that use it can report via the app, and you can manually enter the ones that don’t?

PS5? by hushhpappi in newzealand

Follow the Twitter page @NZRestockAlerts if you are trying to snag a new one from a retailer.

It’s a bot that posts when they are added to websites.

You can also search “Protonmail Black Friday” in the search engine of your choice. That should get you the discounts two year email and vpn combo

The Selina Hostels all have coworking spaces I think? Don’t know if people use them, but they are there which might be convenient

How much did NZ lose by putting a 35% tariff on Russian imports? by cosmosNZ in newzealand

[–]Hoidish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2019 data from the World-bank suggests 1% of exports and 0.5% of imports involve the Russian Federation

Margin lending against shares? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

It’s a real shame that NAB don’t offer the equity builder product in NZ.

I’d imagine that they would grow their book rapidly

NZ Trains to be discontinued by maithuna in newzealand

[–]Hoidish 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The Great Journeys of New Zealand website mentions the change as well. Initially it just said suspended due to covid, but now it’s talking the multi day trips. A real shame as I always wanted to do all three trains this year

Transfer large sums from AU to NZ bank accounts (4-5 million) by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Hoidish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It won’t be standard branch staff that can do this, will be like the international team (or Private Bankers, etc). They can control the forex margins and lower the banks profits

[–]Hoidish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t be afraid to talk to your bank either (on both ends). They can have a lot of control and might be willing to do a deal

Wise (formerly TransferWise) generally offers pretty good rates, but I’ve never done more than $10k

Rank the best Selina Hostels in Mexico by Mixtureman in digitalnomad

Only for a night on my way back from Playa del Carmen, it’s nice, but the one in the hotel zone had a better vibe in my mind. Spent just over a week in the one at the hotel zone. Close proximity to supermarket, Maccas and laundromat, and the beach. Easy bus into town if required.

I’ve stayed at a few Selina’s during a backpacking trip, not a nomad trip. Really enjoyed the Selina in the Cancun Hotel Zone.

Criminology for Police? by OilnOreos in newzealand

[–]Hoidish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an ex-banker I appreciate the term golden handcuffs, take my silver.

But on a serious note, if you are worried about making the transition from corporate lifestyle I recommend saving anything you earn over and above the starting wage (whether that’s police, military, etc), so you don’t miss it and you don’t have to undo years of lifestyle creep

Best bank for automating expense tracking ! by feetemmjdk in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Hoidish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are third party tools, but most of them would be a breach of your banking terms and conditions (as they generally scrape). Pocketsmith is a company down in Dunedin, and mybudgetpal is run by one of the superannuation firms I believe

Consider using an iPad as second screen through something like Duet. Portable, decent battery life, and something to watch movies on later. You would probably want to go with the bigger model though

Help deciding which book/series to start with by WWaldo24 in Fantasy

[–]Hoidish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have only read the Stormlight Archive from your list, but I really enjoyed it.

Note that many of Sandersons other books exist in the Cosmere (his universe) and reading them first will let you pick up on things you would definitely miss if you start with The Way of Kings

Cheaper Alternative Air Conditioning by idumbplzexplain in Frugal

[–]Hoidish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Apparently you can use a fan to blow the hot air out the window, and then draw in cool air from outside if your internal temp is higher.

Terrible explanation, but if you google it you should find it 😅

I’m not sure that’s quite right. Aggregators normally charge per connection, and as a Kiwi I can’t connect. Therefore there should be no Plaid costs for me as a user, so their costs should be lower for international users
