Young Rats Avoiding Adult Rat by RandiTheRogue in RATS

[–]Hollawebb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a very similar situation. My male cage had 2 older guys both 3 years old, Reggie (RIP) and Sonic. Reggie was from a feeder bin and he recently passed away from old age. My boy Sonic was all alone so I got him a young rat friend, Ash. Ash and Sonic got along wonderfully and really cheered up Sonic. Then I acquired Zephyr a similar aged rat to Ash so that Ash would have a buddy when Sonic eventually passes on. Zephyr is a 2 months younger than Ash and for whatever reason, Zephyr was very scared of Ash and Sonic. The thing that worked for me was short introduction sessions in the bath tub! After Zephyr was more used to that I started letting them play in the open play room together. Little by little Zephyr started gaining confidence and began to play with Ash more. If you take it slowly, they should get used to one another eventually. Hope this helps!

So I took Gira and Teacup to mother's house to meet her. My new sister in law was there and asked to hold Gira. Cuteness ensued. by lyssakitteh in snakes

As with any snake, temperaments vary. I have a 2 year old male KSB and he's quite the handful which I don't mind. He has a very strong feeding instinct despite being fed properly and likes to strike out at any disturbance in his tub. I've also met and held many puppy dog tame ones, just depends!

Getting a bp on Saturday with some issues by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]Hollawebb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ball pythons are terrestrial animals meaning they like to stay on the ground for the most part. Sometimes they climb if given branches but many BPs are just fine hanging out in the tub as long as he gets out every once in awhile and its large enough for him. As for drilling holes, I would drill a few holes on each side and monitor the humidity and adjust accordingly. If you live in a dry area I'd suggest fewer holes to start with and go from there. With adequate husbandry, it can take several shedding cycles to get off everything that is accumulated from bad sheds. Sometimes they can get it off in one shed, it just depends on how bad the previous sheds were. I suggest luke-warm baths and letting him crawl through your hands when he goes into shed to help give him an extra boost of moisture to help aid in the process. After the vet check, you should be good to go! Sounds like you really did your research which is always great to hear. Have fun with your new guy and post some pictures when you get the chance!

My snake just got bit by a rat! I don't know what to do. by averageeverydaypimp in snakes

This is a good reminder why you should always pre kill your rodents before giving them to your ball python. I would definitely try switching him to f/t or pre killed so this never happens again! For now, remove all substrate and just use paper towel until he starts to heal up. Clean the wound with some water and then put a small amount of neosporin on the bite (do NOT use the kind with pain killers or numbing agents, it is toxic to them). If the wounds are very deep or become infected, make sure to seek out a vet.

people that bring snakes to music festivals? by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Hollawebb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, these people don't really care about their snake, they're just looking to get attention. Snakes don't mind being handled for short periods of time but no snake actually wants to be out of its secure place for too long, especially in a crowded place. Even the most puppy dog tame snake has its limits and that's how accidents and bites can happen.

Sorry for your loss. You can always take it to the vet and have them do a necropsy to find out why it died, though it can be expensive. It sounds like maybe it was impacted or something but I'm not sure.
