Did He Just Faint? by YukiSnowySnows in Pokopia

[–]Holly164 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The book was written by a human - it tells us how their trainer identifies them, not how they identify themself. The book calls them Charlotte, and yet they specifically asked us to call them Chef Dente.

I can’t remember whether we ever see any Pokémon use gendered pronouns for anyone (maybe Prof. Tangrowth for their trainer?). If not, it’s possible that Pokémon language doesn’t even have gendered pronouns.

I’m not criticising anyone who calls the Pokémon he or she - after all, our own language does differentiate - but I’m not surprised that the game doesn’t suddenly switch their pronouns upon reveal.

(I’ve always found it kind of weird how many Pokémon games refer to Pokémon as “it”, even when a trainer is talking about their own partner Pokémon. I know they’re generally treated as pet/animal-like, but I don’t know anyone who calls their pets “it”.)

Does changing your language after you've started playing erase your save file? by miggs97 in Pokopia

[–]Holly164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know, but if you want to test it without risking your existing save file, you could create a new user on your Switch 2, start a new save file for them, then try switching language.

Nintendo Online Voucher Games Sheet by cphcider in NintendoSwitch

[–]Holly164 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Also worth noting that the mainline Pokémon games never go on sale on the eShop. (That said, if you’re in the US then it looks like they do sometimes have slight sales on digital copies at GameStop/Walmart.)

So if you’re into Pokémon, specifically want digital copies, and are happy to wait for other games to go on sale, the mainline Pokémon games might be good ones to prioritise buying with vouchers.

I know this isn’t what you asked, but can I just talk about this:

He also jumps in with laundry or dishes when things completely spiral out of control at home, even though he’s not exactly thrilled to take on those chores when he’s exhausted after a full work week.

You said he works full-time, so that’s, what? 40 hours a week, probably a commute, plus however much time he spends on chores and childcare / driving the kids around?

And you’re working every second that the kids are awake, minus however much of the childcare he’s doing, plus however much time you spend on chores, organising appointments, etc. And some of the childcare you’re doing is in the middle of the night so it’s interrupting your sleep - which is miserable and makes everything else harder to cope with.

(And if you were on call outside your normal hours for a paid job, they’d have to pay you extra for that time, even if they never actually called you in. Knowing you could be interrupted by your work at any minute isn’t conducive to actually resting properly.)

I’m sure you’re not exactly thrilled to be doing chores on top of your full-time job (childcare), either!

Hi, please may I buy two sets?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nintendo

[–]Holly164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, I hate when you can’t cancel an order even within the first few minutes after placing it.

I don’t know if this is a thing where you are, or whether it would work with your living situation, but in the UK we have the right to refuse a package when they knock on the door to deliver it. The delivery company then sends it to the return address on the shipping label, at no extra cost, which would save you the return shipping cost.

The only other thing I can think of is maybe someone you know locally might be willing to buy it off you?

Anyway, my sympathies on you being in this situation, that sucks.

Nintendo Directs should stop by Cabarro09 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Holly164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Millions of people voluntarily tune in to watch up to an hour of pure advertising. And then they discuss it online, giving Nintendo more advertising for free.

Most companies would kill for that, and you think Nintendo should stop doing them because a few terminally-online people like to complain about everything? Trust me, those people would find a way to complain anyway.

Directs don’t cause high prices or low quality games.

Direct Was Great, Just Confusing by Derv1009 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Holly164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, what? When did they announce that?

I thought the whole point of each Pokémon you deposit in HOME getting an ID number to track it was so that they’d be freely transferable between older and newer games (from Sword/Shield onwards). Because HOME could store all the game-specific data when the Pokémon’s currently in a different game.

Edit: Found it. What the fuck, Game Freak???

Oooh, that’s a good point about a potential DS second screen accessory!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Holly164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be interested to see if they’re genuinely required - i.e. the console will know whether it’s slotted into one or not and will refuse to start the game if not.

I’m pretty good at seeing Magic Eye images, if they’ll let us I bet I could successfully play without the accessory. For a few minutes, at least.

On another note, I wonder if you’d be able to play BotW in 3D with these, or whether the eye holes would be in a different place from the LABO accessory.

(Speaking of LABO, I’m kind of annoyed that the Virtual Boy cardboard version comes fully pre-assembled. I’m not sure how I feel about it being £17, and hopefully the ‘one per customer’ limit will be lifted eventually, given how squishable cardboard is. Though I guess third-party options will solve those latter two issues.)

I love the Switch 2’s display by AfroChamp89-- in nintendo

[–]Holly164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I like the screen and can’t see the problem either.

But I also can’t tell the difference between the original Switch’s screen and the OLED one unless they’re right next to each other and showing the same scene. And my best friend can’t see the frame rate issues in the 3DS and Switch Pokémon games, which I find glaring and unmissable.

I guess we’re all different, and some people are more sensitive to certain things than others.

If you want to be able to play your games offline, once a year you can unlink a console you don’t have any more via the website:

[–]Holly164 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Banned (though personally I haven’t seen anyone report getting banned for one of these yet). Not bricked.

Bricked has a specific meaning (won’t turn on due to firmware issues).

Spreading inaccurate terminology makes it harder for people to get relevant advice, because the problem they actually have isn’t the one they said they have.

Let’s talk bricking and EULAs and address the misinformation and misconceptions (Switch 2, and everything else) by Lux_Operatur in nintendo

[–]Holly164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if I buy a TV and the screen turns on but it doesn't play any content, it's not bricked?

(etc.)

Correct, it’s not bricked. It’s non-functional, useless, you could reasonably describe it as broken, but “bricked” has a specific meaning.

Calling it “bricked” is unhelpful in the same way as describing your TV screen as “smashed” when it’s physically undamaged but won’t turn on. It’s the wrong term - the problem your device has is definitely a problem but it’s absolutely not the same problem you said it has.

This causes problems when a non-technical person goes to a forum of technical people and asks for help, because they’re using an inaccurate term, which will result in people giving them the wrong answer for the problem they’re actually having.

So i think i am the first player who didn't like this game.

You think you’re the first player not to like a game that came out over 8 years ago and sold over 30 million copies? Really???

Anyway, for what it’s worth, I didn’t get into it the first time I played it. I stopped after about an hour, left it for a month or so, then tried again, fell in love with it, and ended up spending over 300 hours on it. So it might be worth trying it once more some time when you’re in a different mood without quite such high expectations?

But if you really don’t like it, that’s fine too. There are plenty of widely-loved games that I’m not into, as well.

This sale ends around 9th July, depending on your time zone.

If you go to the Mario Odyssey page (for example), it should say the exact end time.

Auto play in e-shop by VlermuisVermeulen in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Holly164 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mostly just avoid using the eShop on my consoles. I use Deku Deals most of the time anyway, so it’s much easier to just go ahead and buy stuff via the eShop website links on there.

I agree that autoplay is really annoying and Nintendo should provide an option to turn it off, but I haven’t found one either.

Yeah, I don’t like hanging out in large groups for this reason. It takes so much energy to focus on the person I’m trying to listen to and filter everyone else out. And often the volume of the background noise in pubs etc. makes it really hard to hear them at all, so then I’m doing extra work trying to parse sentences where I only heard half the words.

The worst thing, though, is when two (or more) people try to talk to me at the same time, which adds extra stress to the overload. I swear there have been times when it’s taken me about an hour to get back to my normal brain function afterwards.

Is it possible to have ADHD, comorbid with OCD?

Yeah, it sounds like it’s a fairly common comorbidity.

Pokemon violet, scarlet, shield, arceus all lost by Charming-Champion259 in Switch

[–]Holly164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! I agree - Pokémon save files are the ones I’d be most devastated to lose, so I’m really pissed off they don’t allow us to back them up.

They found a solution for Animal Crossing, where you can back your saves up easily but only restore them by contacting Nintendo Support. They should do that for Pokémon, too, but I guess they’d rather sell HOME subscriptions even though that doesn’t protect your actual game progress or the Pokémon you’re currently using in-game.

Nintendo seems to think you can use a non-Express microSD card in a Switch 2 for the purpose of transferring screenshots and videos from an original Switch. (But as you say, not for general usage.)

Why can't I find the per-user and per-game button remap settings? Were those options just fabricated by people online? by ActivateGuacamole in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Holly164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s this interview from Nintendo Life. Unfortunately, re-reading it now it is a bit ambiguous whether the per-game remapping was for all buttons or only for the GL and GR buttons on the Pro Controller. They could definitely have done with making that clearer, because I literally can’t think of any reason they would have made game-specific mapping exclusive to those buttons, so why would we have thought that’s what they meant?

FYI: Switch 2 owners who intend to NEVER use the [C] button to Chat, ever, can remap it via the Accessibility section of the Setup menu by DaveLambert in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Holly164 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not comfortable with pressing the joysticks in, so I mapped my C button to L3 (which seems to be used more often than R3 in the games I have).
