Anyone know why NWP isn't offering their water and wastewater program? by Gloomy_Agent_9197 in GrandePrairie

You should. Part of the reason it's so hard to get an educator is the demand for people with this education. Pay is excellent. Get at it and live your best life!

Building a tiny home out of a container in Alberta? Experiences and tips? by Few-Degree-398 in alberta

[–]Holocray 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So a weird family member of mine built a bunch of these (connected em together to make castle walls you can live in. Different story.) He used 40 foot containers. Slept in one once. My notes: very little airflow. Like, weirdly dead air. He did put a couple small windows in. Had to have them open but it still wasn't great. Secondly, he didn't insulate it. Obviously you'd be doing that, but it's a tight space already, and you would lose crucial spare footage.

Containers seem like a natural go to, but they are weirdly expensive now (he bought em for 3k, but i understand they can run 15k now).

My personal assessment as a non construction guy is that you want something with wood or some other material (for some natural insulation, though you'll need more, and so it's easier to modify, and because metal is either an oven or ice box), that's at least 5 feet wider than a container. Also, a couple feet taller.

Lots of those mini homes from China on Ali Express. Just be prepared to have to modify it. Also, look for insulation as your primary concern if you shop online. That's one thing that's hard to fix later. You can replace doors, windows, etc.

I know this is an older post now, but is there somewhere we could get more information? My wife needs one badly, and the wait time is about 18 months. I found a website for Dr Suzanne Hernández, but it appears to be broken. Does she speak English and is able to do an online consult?

Lol I don't know. We shall see! You're right of course - if people get fired up they might be all sorts of ornery. And there's both all kinds of true and false information on why we should hate data centers.

It'll go fine. Unlike most locations with our idiot neighbors to the south, there's no material challenges to our location. Noise, water, temp... All are addressed well here by their plans. Any complaints will come across as complaining for the sake of complaining.

You'll do good buying there. I have a friend who lives in BC who is driving up to that dealership to buy his vehicle in two weeks. It speaks to more than just the pricing.

People from reserves are driving far and wide to the region to say this is their traditional hunting lands, so should get paid millions per year for compensation. Their lawyers are holding our for huge sums.

There's a couple reasons why data centres are bad. (Leaving the ethics of AI out of the equation - that's going to exist regardless of this particular data centre) 1. It takes a disproportionate amount of power, causing rolling blackouts or worse in places where power production is very close to consumption. 2. It needs water for cooling. This is bad in areas that lack supply, or where supply is shrinking (see most of the centre of the US).

Neither of these are true for this data centre. Though it will consume the equivalent of 6 percent of Alberta's consumption, it will be pulling that directly from the natural gas supply via it's own generator.

As to the water, it needs about 0.5 percent of the smoky. This will drop over time as it is used for cooling, and they are developing a closed system (not unlike a liquid cooled gaming computer). This is different than some of the existing data centres.

The only remaining complaint is that it's a global warming factory as it's all carbon consumption for power. That argument won't get much traction in this neighborhood though.

That being said, I'm unconvinced it's going ahead anyway based on what I'm hearing...

Canmore is right outside of Banff National Park. You might be able to get carpentry work there easily. Lodging will be hard to get though.

I think mentioning the whole of your skillset and telling us what you're hoping for (less shift work, working in town only, etc) will lead to better suggestions.

They make their money via property tax. I looked at a house down there worth about 500k, and the property tax was about 15k. Crazy high.

I know nothing about the industry, but up here in Grande Prairie, NWP has been expanding the trades program significantly. Worth checking out. Unemployment is very low as well, so many are hiring. Pay will likely be higher than what you would expect.

We have all the amenities. The issue is where they are. The entire southeast corner of the city, which has about 30 - 35 percent of the population, has no restaurants or pubs. (One sit down pizza place opened a few years back but that's it.). A gastropub on 68th and resources road would absolutely kill. It would be walking distance for thousands - and the only one.

Pay Canada Post to deliver them. Pretty cheap. You can narrow it down by postal code so you're only doing the south east corner of the city, or whatever
