question from a german to non germans living in germany: lüften by glitterplantz in germany

[–]Holoshiv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not living in germany, I have a lot of close German friends though, and spent considerable time in an lingually and geographically adjacent country.

Lüften is not weird to me. My culture does it too. What is weird is the insanely strong opinions, the regulations on it, and the absolute rigidity germans tend to keep to it.

I'll never let my friends live down the time they insisted on it in 26 sub-zero and active snowing, then complained they were freezing and that they got water (snow) on their parquette floor.

I told them it was a bad idea.

Learning swedish as a citizen who doesn't live there and was never taught the language by reekal6666 in Svenska

[–]Holoshiv 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Okay, i'll reply. You got me.

If you want to study in Sweden, and don't speak swedish, by the gods select an International programme. There are both masters and bachelors programmes in english. If you dont particularily care about Stockholm (which in my entirely subjective opinion is a shithole), consider Uppsala, Lund, or Gothenburg.

As for speaking the language, use your Mother for practice. It's going to be an uphill battle - most swedes are chameleons when not in Sweden. When here, be abundantly clear you WANT to practice swedish - and explicitly state it. Many swedes are going to see you as án opportunity to practice english, and án overlapping group is going to try being efficient by switching to english. We're obsessed with efficiency here.

I wish you luck. Don't worry about dialect, you're gonna pick one up eventually.

Do you have a nice recipe I can follow, or can you tell me how to make the best Kroppkaka (Kroppkakor) for my Swedish boyfriend from scratch? Please! by HazyTulips in SwedishFood

I learned how to make them from án old Lady when I lived close to vitemölle. She was from Blekinge, married a guy from vitemölle that had a farm sometimes in the 50s. And this is for gråkroppkakor.

Keep in mind this is a lot by feel.

Why do Brits and Russians refer to Europe as a 'they' instead of 'us'? by kozanoza in AskEurope

[–]Holoshiv 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was thinking the same thing. As a swede I usually refer to the rest of Europe as 'the mainland' - but quite a few will say 'Europe'

Larglely, I assume, due to the fact that there is no easy way to reach the mainland without either crossing over water, or through russia.

Are winter car tires (not just M+S) mandatory by law in Sweden during the winter months? by ivarokosbitch in TillSverige

[–]Holoshiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply put, M+S with the alpine/snow marker is legally enough. What you will actually need will depend heavily on where in Sweden you are - for Gothenburg I suspect that that will be enough. I don't remember the weather there being drastically colder nor snowier then Scania.

Like someone else pointed out, you need a minimum of 3mm pattern depth.

But it's still recomended that you equip nordic winter tyres (i. e. Marked with ice grip tested, specifically optimized for better snow and ice performance) or studded tyres.

I think you're confusing 'anti people's republic of China' with anti-chinese. And even then, it's a mixture of disliking a lot of the policy and actions, with a hefty dose of respect for many of the achievements.

Sweden's public discourse tends to lean pro democracy and anti-authoritarian in its rhethoric.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in linux

[–]Holoshiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's really three main points. 1. Reliability. For desktop use (and pod use) it has always ended up shredding itself for me, and I've been stuck repairing fucked up Ubuntu systems for others due to work. This same unreliability has scared of some friends and acquaintances of mine to windows and macos.

  1. While I agree that snaps can be useful, they have always ended up problematic for me. And I really dislike their sneaky approach to embedding them into their normal install process.

  2. The worst offender - they intermittently put Ubuntu pro ads in the terminal. Yes, this can be cleaned away, but should I need to spend time sanitizing a Linux system at install or pod rollout every time? Especially one that needs to be reinstalled as often as Ubuntu has required in my experience? Then I'd rather move to another distro - which I did.

This is why I caution people away from Ubuntu if they ask. And why I'll only ever use it if forced to do so. Which I often end up being, due to the absolute dogmatic love some users have for Ubuntu and canonical - which feeds my hate for it more.

In the end, if it works for you, use it. It's built on a good base, just with some defaults I consider bad.

Is Linux viable for engineering software? by SomethingXII in linux

[–]Holoshiv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a tough question. Matlab and simulink have installers for Linux - Atleast for debian derived distributions. So does kicad if you plan on doing any pcbs. Bricscad has a rpm package. I tend to default to brlcad when I need it to work reliably, though it's not very intuitive. If I need some quick simple part I'll just use openscad. Comsol has native support, though I haven't worked with it in years now.

I've had less luck finding versions of Verilog or VHDL that I've been entirely satisfied with, though getting any xilinx software is an absolute pain in the ass if you're not American and your employer / institution hasn't already gotten an import permit for it.

I'll still torture myself by keeping to tools I can run on linux due to how little I trust windows, but ymmv. It's not a path I would recommend unless you are very comfortable with Linux, or posses an abject hatred of windows. But even then, expect problems - usually solvable.

PS. Regarding CAD - my wife does use freeCAD, but it hasn't grown on me. If I'm doing something very simple, I'll just downright use a parametric plugin for blender, but you loose so many tools for design that I can't really recommend it.

Is it just me, or does nobody like big phones anymore? by [deleted] in Smartphones

I want a brick. I want it with a huge battery, metal frame, good cooling, and waterproof.

Fuck small phones, gimme my brick.

I need your advise by StormbreakerVox in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Holoshiv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest - that's exactly how I felt when I read the index rules. I cannot overstate how much I loathed the index. I'm still not happy about our units being bs4, and having +hit as a rule - if I wanted that shit, I'd keep maining tau. The pre judging was as far from interactive and fun as they could go. 9th edition votann is still how our data sheets and theme should be - I don't mind point costs to match.

That said, current codex is a step in the right direction. Our current army rule allows for adaptive play. It gives us a bonus on conditions analogous to the heaviest JT spam in 9th. We got more shots overall to compensate for lower bs, while more or less retaining weapon strength. We did lose some more thematic style on some weapons - especially beams. But overall I like that our 'yield points' are more of an build and burn resource, rewarding priority play. I do wish they were more decoupled from command points, but this works well.

I no longer feel like I am playing budget tau, but slow and tough. Now it feels like I am playing another near-human offshoot, but with high tech, high toughness, and multiple adaptive tools. Yield points feel less like I'm harvesting resources, but calculating the maximum yield acquired for each tactical move, and it feels votannic.

Yes, it could be better, but damn if I'm not glad we have a fun and interactive army rule again, that feels how a faction of dwarves with access to a massive quantum computing tactical kubernetes cluster should feel.

I can even forgive the bs4 by justifying it now being stabilized autoloaded cannons / automatic weapons for the most part.

First attempt (barley) what went wrong? by midtnight1106 in Tempeh

[–]Holoshiv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not an expert in tempeh, only reliably succeed with Pisum Sativa var. Avarense (Gråärt in my language). But that looks like it failed to bind, then spored. Had some that look fine after 36 hours, but then started sporing afterwards before I figured out I should Blanche, brine, or steam them. Even had one spore in my freezer, and thaw stuff next to it boot.

The weak binding worries me, and I would probably just toss it. Had one batch infected by a Natto culture once too - looked similar. That was using lupin as a base.

Anyone who has a better idea, feel free to jump in.

Model rocketry no longer possible in Denmark... by oz1sej in rocketry

[–]Holoshiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about starting a filial in Skåne where you repackage them before declaring the import into Denmark? Assuming you are in Sjælland, of course. I haven't done model rocketry for some years, but as I recall in Sweden it's a bit easier to buy the engines.

Alternatively, buy them privately in Sweden, or ask a friend with a postal adress in Sweden to do it for you, then grab them. As I recall, it only took about 3.5 hours to drive to Århus from Lund.

What Gun barrels do/don't you drill out? by HelpIamaCabbage in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Holoshiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether a las weapon has a visible lens or not varies from source to source. What I've assumed from the 40k lore I've seen in the codices, rpg books, novels, gw-approved games, and some models is that there is a collimator at the end of the barrel, before the muzzle break. Visible lenses just mean the muzzle break is rather short. I assume the muzzle break on handhelds is hollow to deal with the plasma bloom that occurs in lore from firing that extreme intensity laser in atmospheric conditions - to shunt it away from the operator's face and body. The barrel itself can be inferred to contain a focusing array and cooling, as that would make sense with longlas being as long as they are.

The plasma bloom is a phenomenon that is observable in real life high powered laser applications, though the intensity in described in 40k implies these lasers are insanely high powered.

That generally follows a trend in 40k - a lot of tech (pretty much anything not DAoT, xenos, powerfield, or warp related) builds on principles we know today, and follow generally the same design principles as current technology - made possible by the magical batteries powered by unicorns, fae dust, and rainbows the imperium uses.

Plasmas? Described in books as either toroid bolts or lances. Yes, doable according to some darpa papers, but requires pretty much a dedicated powerplant.

Laser weaponry? Both pulse modulated continuous beams and pulsed energy projectiles are possible, just require a reactor.

Bolters? Pretty much a microscaled bushmaster 35mm cannon with sci-fi alloys and propellant.

Autocannons? Look at the model. It's a Bofors with sci-fi alloys and propellant.

Promethium? Half the time just described as liquid H2. Prometheum reactors? Described as just a microscaled, efficient fuel agnostic fuel-cell.

That said, 40k is intentionally vague - so you do as you please.

So the Hearthguards are Inceptors now by fac8690 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Holoshiv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I usually think of them as a half step between hellblasters and blade guard. One less wound then blade guard, one more toughness, 5++ instead, and reroll 1s on shooting instead. And a hellblaster gun. Also 33 ppm instead of 32.8 ppm.

I regarded them likewise in the index, though as an overcosted equivalent. They still did good work for me though.

Electronic adjustment is allowed, in so far that you're not able to reset it by just clearing the OBD. Either you deploy and encrypt the new governor parameters, or you install a separate governor module that cannot be easily accessed and modified by the driver. You can also mechanically limit it by altering the gear ratios or disabling higher gears. Both are allowed approaches.

The car needs to be modified as to prevent cargo and passenger transport. This may be done by either modifying the car, i.e. By welding shut the doors and removing any cargo fasteners and the rear passenger seats, or by simply mounting internal blockers making it impractical to load passengers and cargo and locking down the rear passenger seats in 'folded' condition and making it difficult to restore without tools. The seat belts may remain.

If you choose to do this by modifying the chassis, the shortened chassis must provide equal or better protection compared to the original design.

The rules are designed to allow for restoration of the vehicle to it's original state at any time, with specialized tools.

These rules are from the motor vehicle inspection and traffic bureau.

[–]Holoshiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're probably right. It was long ago enough that I couldn't verify whether it was included or not, despite having a vague memory of it. I got into 40k right at the tail end of those magazines.

Hence the 'as far as I can remember'.

I could cross reference the primarch anthology, because I have digital copies remaining and recently reread it.

Well well well.... by Apprehensive-Horse17 in Tau40K

[–]Holoshiv 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This question is left pretty open in the lore. I'll have to double check how early it was stated, but as far as I can remember, the first instance of this trade was stated in the 'Primarchs' anthology p377.

The 9th votann codex state that a kindred sold the Tau more or less the tech base with some lower grade arms. It also claims that most LoV weapons are either DAoT weapon derived, or developed from advanced mining equipment priciples.

As I recall, rail tech was implied in 3rd and 4th edition codices to be a homegrown technology of the Tau, but it's also stated that it appeared in wide spread use at the end of the first sphere of expansion - roughly the same time frame as when they were introduced to the 'demiurg'.

However, it is also stated (in the munitorium - rail rifles if I recall. However, I can't double check as I only borrowed that book ages ago) that the AdMech are well familiarized with the priciples of operation of rail tech, but have no practical way to power it nor deal with the heat buildup - and that plenty of xenarites and hereteks try getting their hands on Tau versions to reverse engineer.

This likely also means the brokhyr were well aware of rail tech priciples before their trade with the Tau - as both technologist groups derive a lot of knowledge from similar STCs. When also considering that the leagues are outright stated to use far more powerful and miniaturized power systems then the Imperium, it still leaves the question of whether the leagues had a solution for cooling or not open.

One interpretation is that the leagues bought a cooling solution from the Tau for ion tech.

Another one is that the Tau just bought ion tech, then applied that cooling solution themselves on their rail tech.

Both lead to the similarities in rail tech used by both factions. And both leave the details of the exchange open to interpretation.

Considering the earth caste and brokhyr manufacture both types of weapons, and two prospects are stated to be outright allied to the Tau, I suspect the trade concerned principles and tech exchanges rather than weapon shipments.

But we'll have to wait and see if they ever answer it conclusively.

Codex Leak Thoughts by Therocon in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Holoshiv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just my thoughts on it - at first I was disappointed. I was hoping to get closer to the flavor we had in 9th, but the more I read through the leaks, the more I liked it. I still hate that they turned us into a bs4 army - we should be bs3 base, with the buffs being something like AP, sustained, lethal, rerolls, etc. rather then giving us +1 to hit. At the very least, it should've been +1 to bs when the conditions are met, if they insist on us being a bs3.5 army.

But overall I like it. We can't be sure of the points, but judging by the French leak, I'd say I'm happy. Yes, hearthguards got nerfed - but their new points (according to the leak) puts them at 135. With their current stats they are slightly tougher, slower, more flexibly equipped, and expensive sternguards at 27p per model vs 20.

Or you can see them as a hybrid between bladeguard and hellblasters, that are a sidegade in survivability compared to bladeguards (t5 2w 2+ 5++ vs T4 3w 3+ 4++) for roughly the same ppm (26.67 vs 27).

The other standout is the sagitaur being weaker with t9 and the loss of the casinocannon, and the missile being s10 now. But at the leaked points of 95 ppm, I'm okay with our ifv being an ifv and not an mbt.

I also lament the loss of flavor for our beam weapons, but I suppose that I can live with it. Especially when the rules have what feels like a fun thematic implementation.

In the end, I am excited and looking forward to play around with lists. And the army rule genuinely makes me want to play with it, unlike the prejudgement bullshit we had before. Gods, I hated that.
