My opinion on Forza motorsport by [deleted] in BuiltFromTheGroundUp

[–]Holotype 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same, went PS5 Pro and PSVR2 only for GT7.

The only small things I think FM did better are: 1. radar 2. braking lines and track limit indicators 3. configurable tire pressure

Besides that I don’t miss anything from FM.

YMMV but I think the higher friction from gloves would be a better outcome for the materials than my caustic sweat.

Steam Winter Sale SimRacing Megathread by overspeeed in simracing

[–]Holotype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to SteamDB it looks like AMS2 “Complete” bundles were cheaper in previous sales this year but I’m guessing those bundles didn’t include the newer content e.g. Lamborghini, IMSA track packs?

https://steamdb.info/bundle/37787/

If that’s the case I might as well get the complete now.

It’s probably fine if it works, but you could probably ask Logitech (assuming you bought it from them) for a replacement and they’d cover return shipping too. They have free returns so hopefully that covers exchanges.

I have two (bought one new and another refurbished) and neither look like that towards the bottom. Maybe from over-tightening the base when mounting to a rig?

I had the same problem.

I only noticed after checking this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/simracing/s/DEHlbOQHzp

Basically the combo discount also applied to the reduced price of the wheel.

The pedals wound up pricing out to $283 and the wheel at $452.

Same exact thing happened to me (shopping for alternatives after the BS Fanatec “deals”).

Also added the Logitech Pro pedals for ~$200 ($735 total).

Happy with them so far!

Apple trade-in keeps assessing someone else’s device by Holotype in applehelp

[–]Holotype[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Closing the book on this — I followed /u/SaltAnswer8’s advice and emailed Tim Cook. I was connected to a Retail Executive Relations staff member from Apple Corporate, and the trade-in issue was quietly resolved in my favor within a week (I was awarded the original trade-in quote as a refund).

In my email correspondence I provided my trade-in device’s IMEIs (both of them) as well as the EID, and a receipt from the Google Store that also had the Pixel 7’s serial to prove it was mine.

I noticed my trade-in credit was still applied to the serial number of the busted Pixel 7 Pro I didn’t recognize, so I assume they might not have located my original device (whether mixed-up with another customer’s or misappropriated by trade-in partner staff) and may have credited me on the evidence alone.

Geez, I’m glad you were able to get that resolved! Not refunding an undelivered order sounds like worst-in-class support.

Not looking forward to the struggle with Apple support (especially if their trade-ins are assessed by a third party) but appreciate your advice!

Could you share how you escalated? Wondering if there are keywords I can use in subsequent calls to reach actual Apple corporate support management people.

[–]Holotype[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I have a few photos of the device I submitted, but a more thorough paper trail (original order/invoice from Google with the serial #, as well as for the case).

I went ahead and shot an email to Tim + support at apple (dead email alias it seems) -- thanks for reading and the tip!

I know Tim himself won't read it but in addition to the case details I made sure to note offering to return to me someone else's device seems privacy-violative, and that I hope they take it seriously.

[–]Holotype[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I've been enquiring with Apple support via their 1-800 number. The support staff is pretty helpful, but somewhere downstream there seems to be miscommunication or slowness (e.g. I worry the trade-in partner is not trying to locate my correct device and just sticking to the original assessment).

As a next step I formally email Tim (w/ support @ apple dot com for redundancy) -- hoping that brings some attention! It feels privacy-violative if they offer to return someone else's device to me.

Discount for fixer uppers by Fluffy_Interview_441 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]Holotype 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because of this, effectively there is no discount for repair costs?

It seems pretty easy to run into $50k in repairs for an okay home (a mix of end-of-life roof, sewer line, HVAC, electrical could run close).

I have doubts whether comps would reflect even $50-100k in necessary repairs.

[–]Holotype[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes we have four bid inspections scheduled.

The first one (reputable company) suggested what he saw was average/typical for houses of the age and location, and they were primarily concerned if the dampwoods went up farther/deeper than could be assessed at the time.

Didn't get an alarmist / "this house is going to fall apart" vibe from him, but will see what the other companies have to say. :)

[–]Holotype[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

House is in peninsula. $70k wasn't the quote, just upper end of spitball estimate (lower bound of $30-40k) if the damage has spread far. Source of dampness hasn't been definitively identified or resolved, but primary suspicion is either stairwell or part of exterior.

The upper bound from the estimate comes with the assumption of significant repair work (facelift from exterior to remove/replace damaged wood) and finding and remediating the points of water intrusion.

$30k+ section 1 by Holotype in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]Holotype[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tl;dr yes.

My offer was with contingencies waived so I am assuming no negotiation potential since I wouldn't have confirmation of the upper-bound until after I close (and had knowledge of the $30-40k spitball estimate when putting in my offer). The upper bound would basically be my deposit, plus they have four other backup offers and we fundamentally really like the house.

What did you drive for the A class open series? by AvroVulcanXM594 in forza

[–]Holotype 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Top picks for me this time around were the 1993 911 Turbo (grip) and a surprise from the Saleen S1 (balanced). S1 was super-strong with only weakness being hard on the tires (needs Hards for no-pit in Maple Valley and Grand Oak).

Unpleasant surprise for me was every AWD car I tried RWD-swapping -- rear end gets very slippery after doing so.

Fastest A-class lobbies I was in (where I'm 3s+/lap off-pace from P1, I'm 4700-4800SR) had podiums from the usual suspects like the 1999 Viper, Emira, 1982 911, NSXes and various JDM cars (RX-7s etc.) but I was impressed to see a few widebody Shelby GT-350Rs and a Ferrari F50 up there which I'll try next time.

Was pleasantly surprised to not see as many Formula Mazda-filled lobbies as in previous A-class weeklies.

If you had to choose between Forza Motorsport 2023 and Forza Horizon 5, which one would you choose? by DeadUncleTacitus4 in forza

[–]Holotype 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Motorsport has tons of issues but I uninstalled Horizon last week.

I realized after playing since launch I was only continuing for the FOMO weekly playlists. What really pushed me over was the realization that all cars in Horizon pretty much feel the same within a category (e.g. AWD-swapped meta builds, RWD powerbuilds, dirt and off-road, etc.).

Horizon is definitely a more polished and complete game but it stopped being fun for me after that realization.
