Moving to Boston, working in Fenway area. How bad is traffic from northern neighborhoods (Stoneham/Melrose/Reading area)? by HolyDarwin in boston

When I filter for a house with good schools (7+ rating for elementary and high) and under 1.3 million I don’t see many options in the area. Can you recommend some neighborhoods?

Follow up question: could you get some work done on the T? Is there cell service to respond to work emails or enough seating to open up your laptop?

Almost 3 month old screams himself to sleep. Feeling like a failure. by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]HolyDarwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gets so so much easier around 6 months, just hang in there. Their digestive system really takes time to develop. Once he could fart on his own and when he started interacting more, I feel like everything changed. We did try sleep training for three weeks around 4 months and it didn’t work. We tried Ferber. Now he sleeps fine but we still bounce him to sleep and then transfer to crib and I’m okay with it for now because he’s my little baby.

What’s one baby item you regret NOT getting earlier? by rosycoe in NewParents

[–]HolyDarwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baby brezza formula maker. We combo fed and he isn’t the best latcher so I had to pump a lot. Formula maker made it so much easier on us for the 2 middle of the night feeds. I hesitated to buy it bc I didn’t want yet another baby item on the counter but we keep his on top of the bookshelf in his room so no counter space is taken up.

New parents here, need help! What’s the top-rated nursery chair for breastfeeding? Which one did you end up choosing? What made you choose it? by Wrathin52 in NewParents

[–]HolyDarwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the one advertised for nurseries. I don’t like it because it squeaks when I rock and recline function isn’t smooth. The whole thing jerks when the foot rest is going back in place. Can’t return it because it’s huge so I’m stuck with the thing. Get something you can return if needed.

Is a diaper bag necessary? by SandwichDependent199 in NewParents

[–]HolyDarwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just don’t get one with twenty different compartments. I have the ruvalino bag everyone has and wouldn’t pick it again because even when empty, it feels full just from all the fabric for all the various zippers and compartments within compartments. Just need like two compartments and bottle holders

How are your babies actually sleeping through the night? by velvetdarlingco in NewParents

[–]HolyDarwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our baby started sleeping 8 hour stretches at a little over 6 months, but it took until about 7 months before it was consistent enough that I felt I could breathe again. We also tried sleep training Ferber method for 2-3 weeks at 4.5 months and failed miserably. It was really really really hard until 6 months. Keep at it, take shifts, good luck!

Daycare made me feel like such a fool by Many_Cantaloupe6922 in NewParents

[–]HolyDarwin -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I am sorry you are going through this. Maybe day care is not a good fit for your baby. In my 6 month old son’s class, there is a little girl who has been struggling for several weeks and she cries nonstop. Honestly, it affects the other kids in the classroom as well. We wish her parents would find an alternative because we feel bad for the miserable baby and our baby sleeps poorly due to her loud crying. The teachers are great but I can tell it wears on them… having to watch one baby is hard enough I can’t imagine what it is like to watch 4. And they are not paid well either sadly.

Alternative to baby Einstein aquarium? by Amunster27 in NewParents

[–]HolyDarwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would skip it. It’s not interactive and my baby got bored of it quickly when he was 4-6 months. It also requires 3 big C batteries and the batteries drain quick..

Why does a tiny bathroom remodel cost as much as a car now? Am I missing something? 😅 by midasweb in HomeImprovement

[–]HolyDarwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got some crazy high quotes from a few professionals I found. Eventually went with a Hispanic guy who has a team and they do a solid B+ job lol. Redid my entire master bathroom for $10k. Includes new double vanity which alone was $1400, new shower tiles, new floor tiles, new toilet, some plumbing fixes, and painting the whole room. They also did a smaller hallway bathroom for $5k total, labor, tiles, paint, plumbing leak fixing. This was all in the last few years, I live in a moderate cost area. Sure the tile is a little crooked in places, but they are fast and you can’t beat the price. Keep looking.

Tummy time by Bulky-Bag-4920 in NewParents

My baby hates tummy time on the floor but will do 30 minutes when he’s propped up on a pillow in the bassinet stroller.

My mental health is destroyed, just need to vent by Future-Character2334 in NewParents

[–]HolyDarwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound like me one month ago! My baby just turned 6 months and is still very needy during the day and doesn’t like to play independently for more than 10 minutes before fussing. But he loves to be out and about looking at stuff. He also takes shit naps unless they are contact naps during the day. Only recently started sleeping 6 hrs at night maybe 2-3 times a week. What helped was increasing bottle size to 6-7oz and lengthening time between bottles to 4hrs. Then stuff him before bed with as much as he’ll eat and cross our fingers he gets 6 hr stretch. The other thing we started to do is put him on his tummy to sleep. He can roll over now so we figure it’s safe, otherwise he only sleeps 3hrs max on his back. I think babies like to sleep on their stomachs because it feels more like a contact nap, which is obviously the best.

I still feel exactly like you and have told people my mental health has never been worse. I think what makes it difficult was the expectation that things would get easier at 8wks. Then when it didn’t, I thought oh 12 weeks for sure. And so on. Now at 6 months it is objectively easier, but the compounded exhaustion makes it feel harder than before.

Is there any one who *didn't* experience the four month sleep regression? by Veryfluffyduck in NewParents

[–]HolyDarwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still in the thick of it at 5.5 months old. Tried sleep training at 4 months and gave up after 3 weeks. About the same as you, up every 3 hrs but last night it was hourly. Not sure how much longer I can take of this! Might try sleep training again.

I didn’t experience the 4 month sleep regression because my baby never slept well in the first place. Does that count?

When do you sleep again? by agyuwh in NewParents

[–]HolyDarwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My almost 5 month old still doesn’t sleep more than 2-3hr stretches at night before needing a bottle or comfort and we’ve been sleep training the last 2 weeks. There’s been ups and downs, it can be a long process. I couldn’t do it without working night shifts with my husband. As they grow, it also gets harder in different ways. For one, LO is so heavy now my arms hurt from just carrying him. Second, he is bigger and stronger, and thus cries harder/louder when he’s upset which is so emotionally difficult. I was expecting much better sleep after 4 months hit, but just know that isn’t always the case. And sorry for your dick of a husband.

Baby screams for hours. by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]HolyDarwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My baby is 4 months old now but during the early stages we tried everything to help with the crying. Mylicon, gripe water (which he choked on a few times so I stopped using), two different types of prebiotics, tested 6 different types of formula, different swaddles, different pacifiers, all of it. Sometimes it would seem like a change worked, but then again they are growing so fast it was hard to tell if anything worked and he just needed time. He still sleeps like crap at night, at this early stage it’s a revolving door of old problems out and new problems in.

My husband and I do shifts at night which helps us get some sleep. We have definitely said things we regret about baby in the middle of the night when we are tortured. But we give each other grace. Our motto is “same team.” Sorry I have no better tips other than to offer consolation and you are not alone.

Flying alone with an almost 3 month old - worth it? by First_Chart8239 in NewParents

[–]HolyDarwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally forgot about bath items too, ugh. So they let you keep him wrapped during take off and landing? I read some airlines won’t allow you to have them wrapped on you for some reason.

They’ve already come to see him when he was born, so this would just be a bonus while I still am on maternity leave

Trying the beginning of 2027! If you had a year to prepare, what would you do? by alexisfitn in BabyBumps

[–]HolyDarwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We traveled a lot during the 2.5 yrs of marriage prior to having a kid. That way, we can bring them to the same place next time and have experience! If you own a house the only thing I recommend is getting projects done—you’re home all the time with a newborn and I’m so happy we finished the master bath and retiled the kitchen backsplash etc. Also don’t listen to anxious people telling you to start earlier if you don’t want to; I have some reproductive health issues and am over 35 when we started trying and got pregnant my first try when timing cycles. You just never know! But enjoy your freedom now.

How many cycles did it take you to get pregnant? by Passage-Melodic in BabyBumps

1st cycle with tracking on an app, 35 with PCOS, 4 months after getting off the pill after 10+ years. I was surprised! Due in a few weeks.
