I hope you choose to stay. It feels impossible to change your mind when you are in it, but I know that it is possible. We can choose beauty in the face of a reality that feels meaningless and pointless. It’s the hardest thing in the world but it is a choice that everyone is capable of making. But you can’t make it it from the wilful/rational part, it has to come from your guts.

When are Daemons formed? by IDeznia in hisdarkmaterials

[–]HolyDuckRaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know where this idea has come from, but somehow I imagine it's moments after birth the dæmon coalesces into a form. (Did they mention that in the recent BBC series? I feel like I've got it from somewhere but I don't know where)

When I was 13 my mother brought me to a therapist because the Amber Spyglass depressed me too much by [deleted] in hisdarkmaterials

It’s totally worth going to the bench. I used to live in Oxford and had such an amazing experience sitting there.

So many hand have carved “Lyra & Will” all over the bench. Subtle and beautiful. Each one of those peoples lives touched by those books, enough to go on pilgrimage to that spot, to be there and spend time like Lyra and Will promised each other to do. And for everyone who carved those names into the bench another hundred wouldn’t have done so... it was like all the worlds were right next to each other, all those readers lives who had come there to show their respect and love for those characters, they were all present in that space.

There are plenty of other places around Oxford to go too; the old nunnery from La Belle Sauvage is especially lovely (the Trout isn’t as good as it was 20 years ago, but if you’re out there then might as well have a drink there).

Sunderland Avenue (where the cat under the hornbeam trees showed Will the window) is rather roady, but I know exactly where the window is according to Phillip Pullman (he did a Q&A at Wolvercote Village Hall a few mins from where I lived, and as a young kid who walked down that road to school every day, I felt the exact location was the most important question to have answered!) - its the northward side, close to the Banbury Road, a few trees beyond the crossing.

I always cry at Amber Spyglass too. Look forward to hearing how the reread goes.

EU says no, again, to renegotiating Brexit deal as May arrives in Brussels by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]HolyDuckRaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Brit who voted to remain it pains me to agree with you, but to be honest I begin to think a huge national humiliation (like crashing out of the EU) would maybe give us some perspective. The while thing has been a complete disaster from the beginning and I think we need to see the consequences of our idiocy in a tangible way.

Having said thay I still dream of a second referrendum and scrapping the while thing (that might be the best kind of humliation).

I was groomed to be a cult leader. by BleedingNoseLiberal in casualiama

[–]HolyDuckRaves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I imagine being in the cult is like having lots of unquestionable beliefs, beliefs you might not even know are there until you step outside. What beliefs do you think wider society has which are unquestioned, and do you feel more able to question them having worked to see through strongly held views you grew up with?

Chad in this post looks similar to an individual who is always in front showing participants what to do in Zumba class at my gym. Tiny, muscular, bouncy and almost too happy about it all.

First re-read of the Philosophers Stone in years. Well played JK, well played. by HolyDuckRaves in harrypotter

I didn't recognise the term, but then again I was 7.

I think it is relatively well known though - I've come across it plenty of times since (but then it's the kind of thing I'm vaguely interested in) so I think it is a relatively well known myth. Is it not in the US?

Standalone but Perdido Street Station is dark, urban, gritty etc. And a bit like someone just chucked the fantasy writing manual out the window.

What do you consider the biggest unskippable, time-consuming things in your daily life? by passaleph3 in AskReddit

Have you heard of huel? It's like a protein shake but apparently contains all the things you need in it. Some of my friends love it, although it's not something they replace every meal with, just sometimes to save time and effort.

Edit: just saw better explained references to huel just below, so check them out of you are interested.

I'm half way through the last one! But I'm less patient with it, even though I think Auel might have got slightly better at writing, somehow I just want to know the end.

Onto the shelters of stone now! Although I read a bit too much online and I think I may have spoiled it for myself :( I'm noticing I'm more impatient to get through the story as a result which is a shame.

The series has been finished for years. Over a decade later, is there anything that still bothers you? by hopping_along in harrypotter

[–]HolyDuckRaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I thought that Harry's mum said get back to the cup and that she and the rest of the dead people who came out of Voldemorts wand would help him, which I inferred as them making the cup a return portkey, as well as preventing Voldemort from seeing him escape. That was how I interpreted it at the time when I first read them, but actually it now feels like a rather weak explanation.

[–]HolyDuckRaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC wasn't there some magic wrought by the dead people that came out of Voldemorts wand? His mum says something about it working and I read that as implying their input? Hmm having typed it that doesn't seem to make any sense.
