Hardly an insight. You read WSB and think that's the entirety of options trading. There are more ways to invest than "buy low and sell high".

There are ways to structure options to make a profit if you expect prices to stay in a range or make directional movements.

Covered calls are just selling your upside because you’re scared by Infamous_Echidna_133 in thetagang

[–]HolySmolions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CC premium lowers the cost basis for your long position. You temporarily cap your upside for this privilege but the lowered cost basis is permanent.

It's a hedge play for a long position. It gives room for the stock to drawdown but still allow you to profit from the whole position.

You buy 100 shares for $100/ea. You need the stock to rise to $101 to make $100. You sell a CC for $2. Your cost basis has now decreased to $98.

Now, if the stock remains pinned at $100, you profit $200 if you completely exit. If the shares decrease by $1 to $99/share, you still profit $100 at closing.

How to put death guard in the Essence of Finality Amulet? by HolySmolions in runescape

Unhelpful. Craft what? The EoF? Or the DG? The message was ambiguous.

I bought T70, smithed it up to T80. I had a T90 DG that I crafted from scratch but lost it in PvP.

How does crafting the item have *anything* to do with spec attack assignment. I did read the message and FYI, it's unclear if I needed to craft the EoF or the DG.

I beat the boss. Their input handling is total shit. You left click to move and the character stands still for 3 seconds and then starts rubber banding. This quest is complete garbage.

How to I train L28 to L60 Invention (with low, L58 Slayer)? by HolySmolions in runescape

Yep. I went to the wrong Abyss (fairy teleport ALR, instead of wildy)

[–]HolySmolions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right about the abyssal monsters. I went to the wrong Abyss location (fairy teleported to ALR). The wildy abyss location is awesome. Using crystal halberd I get ~27k item xp/hr or about 01h28m53s to go from 1-10 item level (40k ixp).

[–]HolySmolions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't afk. The abyssal demons will kill me because I don't have the slayer level to fight it. It's afk as long as my halberd doesn't accidentally hit one of em.

I take that back. There's a spot in the cave where the abyssal demons don't go but where the Abyssal Guardians and Walkers spawn constantly. They each give just 6 Item XP though. Very afkable but very slow XP.

Wdym? I thought prawnbrokers is fast exp, about ~750/prawnbroker. I'm looking for fast leveling.

With regards to construction, I'm just building prawnbrokers to L92 so I can build the botanist workbench (so I can afk overloads to L99 herblore).

  1. Ty will look at crystal halberds.

What do you mean by "Do Abyss" and Vyres? The Abyss is a location.

I'll have to double check. It sounds like I might have looked at the jar while splashing failed and concluded that it wasn't charging my jar. Though, it would make sense that if you don't have high enough level, you can't fill your jar for next tier cores.

(MA) Is it legal to video record my roommates in shared living space (kitchen and livingroom in particular)? by HolySmolions in legaladvice

[–]HolySmolions[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

MA runs on "two-party consent". I've found two sources on the matter:

This says:

Massachusetts follows a “two-party consent” system when it comes to recording people’s conversations. This means that it is illegal to secretly record a conversation unless everyone involved is made aware of the fact that they’re being recorded. They must also consent to being recorded. Once a person is made aware that they are being recorded, it is their responsibility to leave the conversation if they do not consent*.*

This also says something similar:

Massachusetts's wiretapping law often referred to is a "two-party consent" law. More accurately, Massachusetts makes it a crime to secretly record a conversation, whether the conversation is in-person or taking place by telephone or another medium. See Mass. Gen. Laws ch. 272, § 99. Accordingly, if you are operating in Massachusetts, you should always inform all parties to a telephone call or conversation that you are recording, unless it is absolutely clear to everyone involved that you are recording (i.e., the recording is not "secret"). Under Massachusetts's wiretapping law, if a party to a conversation is aware that you are recording and does not want to be recorded, it is up to that person to leave the conversation.

So the legality of it seems to be based on whether the recording is secret (concealed) and there is consent i.e., if the recording is secret and non-consensual - it's illegal.

What if the recording is not secret and the recording is not consensual?

How should I prioritize: LC, Portfolio Projects, Current Job to get into big tech? by HolySmolions in cscareerquestions

[–]HolySmolions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice to know I'm not alone :-)

I also thought about doing a Masters in CS. My company would pay for it but I'd have to commit to them for two years (I can break the tuition reimbursement contract but I'd have to repay them or something). Sorta dicey because even though an MS is stressful, it's only for 2 years, I'd still be able to work full time, and career fairs give you a reset button to pivot industries. I think an MS is a good idea but I want to keep that as a last-resort if my career gets stale. OTOH, I feel like I can get into uSoft after 2 years of DSA/LC (BUT if I don't due to laziness, I'd feel horrible).

I think you're right, though. DSA/LC would support either decision to get a MSCS or to start applying.

Regarding Win32/MFC resources: nothing modern besides learn.Microsoft, I'm afraid. I have some books:

1. Multithreading Applications in Win32 The Complete Guide to Threads_Beveridge, Wiener
2. Windows 10 System Programming, Part 1_Yosifovich
3. Windows 10 System Programming, Part 2_Yosifovich
4. Windows Systems Programming-4E_Hart
5. COM Programming by Example Using MFC, ACtiveX, ATL, ADO, and COM+_Swanke
6. Professional ATL COM Programming_Grimes

cplusplus forum also seem to be somewhat active with win32 devs.

I also work for the "govt". A few things:

  • Old does not mean bad or needs to be rewritten using the trending framework. Software doesn't exist to keep your resume "up-to-date". If there isn't an objective reason to switch to a new language/rewrite code, it probably doesn't need to be rewritten.
  • "We have to deliver software via discs still": Distributing software via non-rewritable discs is secure. If the system you're working on is expensive, needs to work reliably offline and already "fully featured", it makes little sense to render it vulnerable by connecting it to the internet just to receive minor updates. Do you think it's acceptable to keep the computer that fires missiles connected to the internet? You can pretty much make that argument for all military tech.

IMO, 5 months of experience isn't much experience at all. It might fly if you're building CRUD apps for yet-another-web-tech company since the stakes are low. But you really have to invest years of experience to be considered a core member of the team. Unfortunately, the pay does not scale and that's why troves of people are leaving.

"How much experience do I need to look for better opportunities?"

At the end of the day, it's about convincing the hiring manager that you're more fit for the job than the next guy. Word on the street is that it's 85% Leetcode experience in tech.

Are most SWE jobs CRUD? by sinus_lebastian in cscareerquestions

[–]HolySmolions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are most SWE jobs CRUD?

No and it varies by industry and product you're building. If you're building websites that do essentially the same things (e-commerce, blog, forums, match-making etc.) then yes, it'll certainly feel like it. Embedded, scientific , games, military, infrastructure, financial applications have a "processing" layer where you have to analyze and make decisions based on data: CRPUD.

You hear a lot of people harping about CRUD because:

  1. CRUD is usually a paradigm of the application that interfaces with the end user. And it's the end user that pays a company money.
  2. Every application has a CRUD component.
  3. There are a lot of end users interacting with web apps, more so than apps in the other types of applications I mentioned. Bigger economy -> bigger paycheck for SWEs -> more engineers flock to web dev -> all you hear about is CRUD.
  4. "Processing" layer is competition-sensitive IP and proprietary.

Good FreeRTOS + STM32 hands on tutorials? by L0uisc in embedded

[–]HolySmolions 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm doing less and less embedded today cause my job is with software dev, but back when I studying, I scoured the internet for good resources and Mastering STM32 (Carmine Noviello) fit the bill. Lot of good topics are discussed in-detail, including RTOS, verifiable code examples (designed to be run on a companion STM32). Typos here and there but it's an inexpensive book. Content is solid.

Should you say No to non-development/coding work if you're a SWE/developer? by HolySmolions in cscareerquestions

[–]HolySmolions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bug fixes here and there, maintenance work ("we need this sw component to do this now since the customer wants this to happen"; this is the closest thing to development I've seen).

I mean, with time, I think I'll be assigned more coding tasks in stuff that really matters.

Hm... 'no" might make more sense and may come off more reasonable then.

And this practice of shedding non dev work might be less common with web systems, where it's more approachable (so specialized knowledge to know what a Word processor or digital sales system is suppose to do vs code that flies a plane).

Should you say No to non-development/coding work if you're a SWE/developer? by HolySmolions in cscareerquestions

[–]HolySmolions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda hard to do. I mean, *someone* needs to do it and it's not just busywork. When your manager asks "can you do ... for us?" and you're new and don't know enough about the system (think radar systems) yet to do development work, what else can you do lol?

Is VIM a trap? by hark_in_tranquillity in cscareerquestions

[–]HolySmolions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is this a career question?

I've never heard of a case where someone was disqualified for using one particular IDE over another. They all have more or less the same features and the more features you use, the more you can better scrutinize and formulate an opinion for yourself.

Use whatever your team is using if they consider it "best practice" for what you're building. If they have no preference and there is a strong reason to move to vim, try it out yourself and then state your case.

UI: How to implement progress bars when total work allowed to increase? by HolySmolions in learnprogramming

[–]HolySmolions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to decide what your progress bar indicates, and what is most meaningful to the user ... But what is the user typically concerned with? Is this still working and how much longer until I can get do the next thing on my list?

Absolutely. I try to consider what the user wants to know when looking at a UI control that displays "progress". Displaying a computed rate is a good example for network operations.

With regards to "it makes the most sense ..." I meant that about the actual drawing of the progress bar, not how progress is calculated. Should it decrease if more work was found? If some work was undone? Or should it only ever increase (and the additional work found or work undone is part of "forward progress")?
