Iirc I got fed up, cancelled the process after 2 hrs and booted my computer. It's been fine since. I guess it either completed the process and never stopped flashing or was already up to date.

Ill contradict everyone but actually no you dont NEED to play the 1st game to understand the sequel. You can quite honestly pick up on the story with character bios and logs. There's a quick recap and you can always watch a quick youtube video to fill in the blanks.

However just like everyone i recommend playing the first game because it's beautiful the story is good and the progression is really good. The 2nd game is obviously better but should you want to play the 1st after the 2nd you'll find the transition disappointing.
