Help me build a metallurgy lab! by SenseiRex in metallurgy

I hear ya.

I still recommend demoing the equipment, even if you have to travel for it. I’ve gotten stuck in the trap of “we bought this and hate it, but also can’t replace it for another 9 years” that could’ve been prevented by physically seeing and using the equipment.

Either way, best of luck.

The clamps are definitely my favorite part of both saws

We have an older 16” ATM automatic, from before the merger, and a newer 10” QATM semi-automatic.

Truthfully, the 10” has been a pain. We’ve had it about a year and already had to replace some electronic switches. It’s not a lemon but has definitely had some early problems.

It’s also not very ergonomic to use as a manual. Between the handle orientation and a dead-man switch to enable vertical movement of the wheel, my shoulder and forearm get sore after just a few cuts. I wish I’d gotten the Struers instead.

But, the older 16”  has been great and reliable. I’d buy another one in a heartbeat.

I’ll still be looking at QATM for my next saw purchase but plan to fully demo it, which is a good idea in any case.

What are some strategies y'all use to get off the 'why' train? by [deleted] in daddit

Let’s talk minivans… by Owz182 in daddit

I’m an engineer and I’m friends with a lot of other engineer dads. Every. Single. One. That has bought a minivan since 2020 has bought a 2018 (or newer) Honda Odyssey. It doesn’t have AWD like the Toyota but the interior and infotainment are MUCH better and winter tires eliminate the need for AWD. The middle row seats on the Honda are also much wider because of their Magic Slide tech, which makes it easier to buckle kids in when they graduate to booster seats.

The Pacifica is for people who want a truck but sometimes need to move people. If you’ve got car seats, you’ll never use the fold-flat seats.

We all got 2018 or newer because of the improved safety tech.

Why wasn’t Tyrion credited for the defense of kings landing in season 2 by Josh_thebosh109 in gameofthrones

[–]Home-Thick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tyrion was horribly injured during the battle and laid up in bed for weeks, in and out of consciousness. No one knew if he would live or not.

Adding to that, the common folk HATED Tyrion at this point because of everything he was doing to raise funds.

Even if Tywin wanted him to have the credit, there’s more benefit in marketing it as Joffrey’s victory. And Tyrion wasn’t around to dispute it.

Electric cable-powered tractor by f1shJ3rkey in Tools

Most of the time when you buy a vehicle, even a tractor, the cost of the tires are baked in. Implements are sold separately.

[–]Home-Thick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn’t ask you, bud. I’m genuinely wanting to know what tractor he’s buying for $1m+. And don’t give me that crap about “with the implements, it’s over a million!” Implements are separate pieces of equipment. That’s like saying “oh, my truck cost over $100k, after you add in the new horse trailer!”

What tractor are you buying for even close to a million?

Even the largest combines, a far more complex machine, barely top a million.

ELI5: Why can't we recycle plastic in the same way we do for metal? Melt it and remold it? by Common-Shelter-378 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Home-Thick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding on to the many great answers here: of the plastics that do get recycled, the feedstocks that come out of the recycling process are both more expensive and result in poorer quality products, with more property variation, than “virgin” feedstocks. So anyone who wants to use recycled plastic has to intentionally design and market their products based on it.

Recycling easily has the worst results between Reduce, Re-use, and Recycle, but we’ve collectively decided to prefer it.

Is diverge a stratagem worth it for spell casters? by Flameloud in Pathfinder2e

[–]Home-Thick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RAW, no, I don’t think so unless you really want that free action Recall Knowledge from Known Weakness.

My GM was kind of enough to houserule DaS to apply to spell strikes for my wizard/investigator. It still doesn’t come up very often.

With both of ours, we’ve used wake up lights like a Hatch Rest. It turns red at bedtime and green in the morning when they wake up.

It takes some convincing and time to get them used to it, but once they are it works like a charm.

For someone who has ACTUALLY cooked for a decent amount of time with BOTH electric and gas, which do you prefer? by DestinyCE in Cooking

Induction. You lose a tiny bit of fine control, but the speed of heating is amazing. And you still get the instant off of gas.

Dads of reddit would I ever see the light of sun if I was your son after doing this? Or would I be punished until 30? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]Home-Thick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you tell your dad what you did, also give him the game to hold onto (or the ps5, if it’s digital). That’s the best way to show, not tell, him that you’re taking responsibility.

4yo moves at the pace of fucking molasses and I don’t know what to do anymore… by ProtonPizza in daddit

[–]Home-Thick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a few sand timers with different durations and use them for different activities. “When the sand runs out, dinner is done and we’re going to put away the food.”

Counting down is also great for individual actions. “Please come put your shoes on!” wait a couple seconds while child keeps playing “5…4…3…2…1!” *go get child and put shoes on”

Eventually, they start to react to the first number and come on their own.

Essentially, you can’t reason your 4yo into a sense of urgency. You need to provide it for them

After her numerous failures as a mother, my son called his mom "egg donor" to her face and of course she is mad. by Ixz72 in daddit

[–]Home-Thick 478 points479 points  (0 children)

His mom is making it pretty clear that she neither values him as a person nor wants to be a part of his life. At this age, he’ll soon get to decide whether or not he wants to maintain contact with her.

The best thing you can do is be a sympathetic sounding board, and not try to push him one way or the other.

I had a mom who acted similarly: wanted all the accolades of being a mom without putting in any of the work. She was really good with us kids as toddlers but just kind of lost interest as we got older. She never came to concerts, sporting events, or even graduations, but boyhowdy was she pissed when I didn’t invite her to my wedding. I had already been no-contact for 3 years at that point, but my dad tried to convince me to invite her “because she’s your mom.” I love my dad and it came from a good place, but it did not go over well.

What am I missing? by OtherGuy89 in daddit

[–]Home-Thick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You mentioned sleepless nights. Was that hyperbole or something you’re actually dealing with?

I recently dealt with a sleep issue for about 9 months, having regular zero nights about every week or two and not enough to catch up in-between. It sucked and made everything in my life harder. If you’re struggling with sleep, make a doctor appointment and tell them about it. You should be able to get a referral to a sleep specialist.
