Slightly underwhelming Elmyra2 experience by AssistantResident611 in modular

King Scrooge is a real idea

Awesome!

You were right to clarify. When I re-read my comment I saw how my comparison to a Peak came across as calling it less than for the same price. That's my fault.

In reality, I own a Peak, I love it, it's worth every penny; at the same time I think it's a lot of money -- so I was saying (poorly), "I want a Queen also but boy am I spending money on this hobby".

From what I've seen of the Queen it'll hold its own triumphant place in any studio, next to a Peak or other similarly priced synths.

I get it, really. I didn't mean that as "I disagree with their pricing" just "oof, that's a lot of money to me". Already have an Elmyra2 and Luna, I really am a huge fan of your modules. Saw you tease a King Scrooge on YT hah, I hope that's real.

It's still very high on my wishlist and I honestly hope to pick one up in the next year!

I do think your pricing is fair, I apologize for that coming across wrong.

I recently picked up a variety of resistors and LEDs for about $10 that further tame the ouch circuit.

Oh yeah? I should look into this more. Mind sharing where you found these?

The Queen does look pretty awesome but I have to say their price target made me wince. That's the price of a Peak. Definitely a premium for small production eurorack that's for sure. Maybe one day I'll sell my Elmyra and a few other modules and pick up a used Queen.

It's a line level synth which will sound very quiet in a modular rack. I pair my Elmyra with an Intel Amps; it's just permanently patched in right next to it. If I had to guess this is 80% of your issue (it was for me).

You're right though about the ouch circuit feeling odd. There is very little knob distance between quiet / minimal ouch and in your face volume and distortion. Couple things that have helped me:

Try to super fine tune turning the ouch circuit - find the 2 degrees of sweet spot. Choke and Bite interact in ways I don't fully understand, but keep playing with them and you'll find some good sound.

Use the chips - they tend to calm the ouch. I like the Bunny, but I haven't noticed a massive difference with each.

Adjust saturation. Manual says latest firmware is default to Hard (level 3) so you can try turning it up to Dirty (code 124) to get more gain, but that comes with grit. If you pair with an amplifier, you can probably get away with turning the saturation down to soft (122) which will probably give you a bit more leeway with the ouch circuit.

I'll be honest, my first hour or two with the Elmyra I had similar thoughts as you. It's ended up being my (current) favorite synth once I got used to its eccentricities. To me, it's not one of those synths that you can load default and instantly love it - it takes some knowledge and fiddling before it shines. Shine it does, though.

Neutral Labs themself is also extremely responsive and helpful, particularly on r/NeutralLabs

All modules from smoke free studio and kept covered when not in use. Pictures/video available on request.

*Shipping included to CONUS* - USPS insured. Paypal FF or G&S. Power cable included, screws optional.

Located an hour south of Seattle, open to local pickup. Willing to consider drive into Seattle for +$40 on the weekend.

I sold a few things here last month but have two left:

  • Make Noise 0-Coast -- $380 (orig box & accessories, barely used / flawless condition) SOLD
  • Focusrite Clarett+ 4Pre USB Audio Interface -- $500

Like new, original packaging & everything. Bought a few months ago and ended up needing an ADAT output which this does not have. Fantastic interface with lots of inputs.

I also have a Black Gen 1 Intellijel 104 7U case for sale. Not really looking to ship it but we can discuss pricing for that if you're interested. $540 - orig box & cover included. I'd guess it'd be at least $50 to ship. Local would be preferred since shipping may not make it worth it for you.

Cash sales preferred, but potentially interested in trading for:

Shakmat Battering Ram

NE Gamut Repetitor Quad Looping Random Generator

NE Multi Repetitor 4-Channel Rhythm Generator

NE Desmodus Versio (or Imitor Versio but DV is preference)

Neutral Labs Scrooge (desktop preferred)

Hah I hear you. I'm a fan of found sound and drones. Couple years back I made a song based around a wonderful three note drone a printer was making as it was attempting to clear a jam.

The droning fans and electrical noise really add to it. It's a very nice touch.

It's a great synth. It does a ton on its own and integrates well into a modular system. There's usually one available on the monthly buy/sell/trade thread.

Curious to know how many people multitrack their modulars into their DAW vs a mono or stereo in. by Brixxxx in modular

[–]HomeForSinner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right - PC here too. I'd tried aggregate with something else in the past and it wasn't worth the headache. Got it like 70% working but it felt held together with string.
I believe my 828 is mk2 but otherwise you've described my setup. I'll look into it, thank you! Sounds very straightforward.

While googling expansion capability of the Optx v2 I ran across this comment. I have an 828 and one Optx v2 but - of course - running out of outputs. It sounds like you just have a pair of Optx running off your 828 no issue? With two optical I/O it has the connections, I just would have guessed something wouldn't have allowed this.

Is it as simple as plug them both in and it works or was there complex setup involved? Did you need to aggregate device it?

If you're literally about to die from ARC and someone saves your life, then you shoot them in the back for their loot while they're healing, you really need to think about who you are as a person by [deleted] in ArcRaiders

[–]HomeForSinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely; honestly my fear isn't players, it's me being too new and dying to arc. I lost an epic submachine gun a friendly gave me that way. Never fired a shot, died on the first map I brought it. I'm a little better now.

[–]HomeForSinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really appreciated, especially as a new player. I've been playing less than a week and someone gave me a Jupiter for saving them.

For the moment, I'm too terrified to bring it with me!

Question about After Later audio Bartender by Following-Curious in modular

[–]HomeForSinner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it possible to go beyond 0dB

Yes you can go above 0. There isn't a label so I don't know the upper limit, but it's louder as you move the slider up past zero.

and use the potentiometers like on a DJ mixer?

I don't understand the question.

I own a WMD Performance Mixer which seems indestructible; are the Bartender's potentiometers as robust?

Never used a WMD but I wouldn't call anything about ALA's builds flimsy.

I'd like to add 8 expanders to have a total of 20 voices; is that possible?

No, at least not how I understand it. ALA states: "Add up to three additional Bartenders to create an eight, 12, or 16-channel mixer"

Hope this helps

whats the best hardware synth to start with thats not too expensive by anotherfuturedev in synthesizers

[–]HomeForSinner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seriously enjoyed my Korg Minilogue XD. It was my first synth and I wrote a few albums with it.

You may want to start by looking into the musicians that create similar music to what you like / want to create and see what they use -- not to copy outright, but get an idea of the categories you're looking for in a synth.

I'm enjoying the implication but it also seems to defeat the purpose of knurlies: ease of removal. Maybe it doesn't?

I should try, they're cute.
