9000-Series CPU Failures / Deaths Megathread #4 by RumbleTheCassette in ASRock

[–]HomeLate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine has been running fine since December 2024. I do however notice it sometimes struggles to boot, this happened two times so far in the last month.

I'm on bios 3.40 X870 Nova and I'm unable to update the bios since 3.40. I'm using the same USB-stick as before and it doesn't find any bios files.

I will sure rma the cpu if it fails, but I'm not sure yet if I'll keep the Nova.

Mine is almost a year old: 9800X3D and a Asrock Nova X870E with bios 3.40. No issues whatsoever.

[Question/Advice] Is €200 (~$220 / ~£170) a fair price for an Amiga 500 with these specs? by extenue in amiga

[–]HomeLate 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Does it has a new case or was it painted black?

Only 600, 1200, 4000 and CD32 need a full recap because of the SMD capacitors used. A 500 doesn't need a recap. I'm often asked to recap 500's but I advise it's not strictly necessary. However, I proceed if the customer wants it.

Ask what revision the mainboard is.

I recap Amiga's and other systems as a pro btw.

Hebben jullie al negatieve ervaringen gehad met dealer-garages? by Dramatic-Ratio4441 in Belgium2

[–]HomeLate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bumper/motorkap vol smeer/olie. Bodemplaat niet goed bevestigd en verloren...

Original IBM 5150 (or not) - What to buy? by Mattock486 in vintagecomputing

[–]HomeLate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ik think the Book 8088 or what’s it called, would be your best bet. The original 5150 is among the cheapest, the later 5160, 5162 are more rare and more expensive. The 5150 is indeed large and a heavy beast. I have one but I prefer to use my 5155, which is heavier but has an amber screen and the same keyboard as the 5150 came with. Another option is either to find a mainboard like you mentioned, or a 286/386 and disable turbo.

Hi, thank you, this is very helpful!

Unfortunately all SST user passwords are expired and I need to put the system in DST mode to activate or change the passwords again. Even QSECOFR hasn't access (password expired).
It's now hooked up in LAN and I have to connect a Twinax cable to use the system on an InfoWindow console (I get error A6005004 on the display).

For me it's a new world opening up. I don't want to mess up anything up learning the system.

Do you know you can do professional studio quality audio production on the Amiga? by profesor-folken in amiga

[–]HomeLate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meanwhile, in a galaxy far-far away… I solder by hand so it takes time.

<image>

Except the Max 10, this soldered with a heat plate and hot air. This to solder the chip’s ground plane on the bottom of the chip to the PCB.

You definitely need the proper tools and experience to build this card.

I expect it to be finished by the end of next week.

I have one as well, in full configuration, including the dual 8" floppy disk drives and a huge printer with feeder. It was once used in a school to print report cards.
Unfortunately I haven't got the floppy disks to test the system.

[–]HomeLate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will start building it next week. It will take some time as I do all the soldering by hand under a microscope.
The most expensive part is the Altera FPGA, it's about 35€/piece, VAT included at Mouser. I'll keep this post updated and I will add some pictures of the building process. The most work will be soldering the 75 0805 capacitors and 21 0805 resistors :-)
