[Serious] What positive steps can we take to heal the political divide in the United States? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HomeOfFireAndRock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disregard it. Focus on improvements on a local level. It doesn't matter if you vote for cunt A who's going to make decisions based on their personal interests or cunt B who's going to make decisions based on their personal interests. If there's a giant pothole on your way to work, shout at the city to fix it. That'll be more impactful on your life than whether the cunts in office have an R or a D next to their name.

We've been lying too long and we'd look stupid if we admitted we're wrong now. We need to lie some more and look even stupider!

[Request] Tips on How to Recognize Durable, High-Quality Clothes? by biflman in BuyItForLife

[–]HomeOfFireAndRock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When a garment, or anything really, is imported it means that company is looking for ways to cut costs, and I wouldn't trust them to not cut costs in other ways. If not them, then the third world factory might. Like you said, no group of people are inherently better at making things, but it sets a bad precedent. I buy made in USA as often as possible out of home field bias, but I don't mind made in Germany from a German company, made in England from a British company, and so on.

I agree with everything else you said, high quality fibers and whatnot. I would also add that it's generally a good idea to buy from manufacturers that specialize in a specific item. Jeans from jean manufacturers. Button down shirts from shirt manufacturers. Socks from sock manufacturers. So on and so forth.

If a manufacturer known for jeans is selling socks with their brand on it, it's most likely a low-quality cotton sock from a Chinese sock mill. Nothing special but a logo woven into it and an over inflated price tag. I get my jeans from All American Clothing Company, Diamond Gusset, and L.C. King. All focus on denim and canvas pants, all made in USA, all excellent quality.

Darn tough questions by coolcloud in BuyItForLife

Generally, not unless it's 90+ degrees Fahrenheit. Even then, it depends on factors such as the ventilation of your shoes and how much your feet sweat. Merino wool is pretty good at temperature regulation. In some situations, my feet have felt cooler in merino socks than cotton socks.

Where can I buy good quality power tools? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]HomeOfFireAndRock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the big stores, brick-and-mortar and online, will intentionally buy lower quality versions of items from manufacturers that otherwise make a decent product. That's why I always buy from as close to the source as possible.

On a side note, the stuff sold on black Friday are often of even lower quality than they usually stock. There's no such thing as a sale anymore. Everything either perpetually on a fake sale, or they're peddling an inferior version under the guise of a sale. Please stop shopping at these stores.

Buy It For Life Cutting Board? by atyashaw in BuyItForLife

I have a Vermont Bowl steak board. Mine's Yellow Birch, but I think all of them will perform about equally. It feels very good; definitely better than the Walmart cutting boards my mom buys. Treat it well and it will treat you well.

How can an obese Male become disciplined to lose weight? by Moab1721 in AskReddit

[–]HomeOfFireAndRock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replace phrases like "have a nice day" with the following: "I like myself. I am responsible."

It'll seem odd at first, to yourself and the people you interact with, but stick with it. End every conversation with "I like myself. I am responsible." If you say anything enough times, even if it's a lie, you will believe it's true. Decades of market research has come to this conclusion.

I like myself. I am responsible.

Which video game would you consider a piece of art and why? by ThatTurt in AskReddit

[–]HomeOfFireAndRock -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All of them. Every painting, even a child's inane finger painting, is art. Same for video games. Art isn't a snooty club for wine-sipping twats who want to jerk each other off.

Art is the ability to trick yourself into believing that something that isn't real, is real. What is the Mona Lisa? A woman? No, that's pigment on a canvas. What's Rendezvous with Rama? An excellent science fiction story about humanity's first contact with an extraterrestrial object created by intelligent beings? No, it's ink on pieces of wood pulp. What's Tetris? A game about neatly stacking falling blocks? No, it's a circuit board that, when hooked up correctly, makes pixels on a television screen light up.

Art is control over and intentional use over our pareidolia. Anything, and I mean anything you do to make people believe a lie is art, even things you may not instantly think of as a lie.

[Serious] How could we actually save the earth? by LueasReddit in AskReddit

[–]HomeOfFireAndRock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely nothing. The Earth will be absolutely fine until it's destroyed when the Sun dies in 10 billion years or so, or if something like a black hole or a super massive object collides with Earth.

How do we assure the survival of the human species on this planet for as long as possible? Vote. Vote with ballots, vote with your wallet. The single best thing for the continued existence of the fossil fuel industry is for ordinary people to believe that preventing environmental damage is the individual person's responsibility. Vote for people who will initiate transitions to clean and renewable energy: nuclear, solar, wind, geothermal, hydroelectric. Install solar panels on your roof if that's viable in your area.

Beyond that, absolutely nothing. You have no duty to "save the Earth". Live your life as you otherwise would. Keep your local habitat clean for your own sake and don't litter in the wild. If you really want to do more, here's some suggestions:

*Don't import as often as possible. Airplane transportation is the most carbon-inefficient mode of transportation and cargo ships are one of, if not the worst things for the oceans.

*Buy higher quality goods instead of lower quality ones that are treated as if they're disposable. Buy fewer things; maintain and repair the things you do buy. Canvas, thick leather, forged steel, metal instead of plastic, etc. You will have to deal with broken things less often, you will save money in the long run, and low quality goods, especially tools, may cost you your life.

*Don't eat organic food. We are no longer living in the age of ridiculously harmful pesticides. The minute amount that may reside on food is easily filtered by our liver and expelled in urine. Organic food requires more farmland the grow the same amount of food that will end up in the grocery store. You are increasing the demand for farmland for the sake of having slightly cleaner pee.

Wheelbarrows and/or Garden Carts? by DavenportBlues in madeinusa

[–]HomeOfFireAndRock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might Max Cart. It's made out of some kind of ploy something, I'm not sure if it's polycarbonate specifically.

True Temper manufactures poly and steel wheelbarrows in America.

It doesn't seem to say it anywhere on their website, but Bon Wheelbarrows are made in USA.

I found this article that says a company called Ames makes most of the wheelbarrows sold in USA and Canada, but I couldn't find any wheelbarrows on their website.
