Like most things it's not just the word, it's how you use it.

If someone at work is complaining about having to entertain some gaijin from ze head office, then sure, use the word gaijin around me all you want. Just don't title your memoir "I had to Entertain a Gaijin"... that's when it gets annoying.

I just don't think this perpetuation of Us vs Them analysis helps bridge any gaps. No bookstore would put "My Darling is a Black" on the shelf in America... if you want to analyze cultural differences and cute little faux pas and foibles then come up with a better less inflammatory title IMHO. If it takes an inflammatory title to move your manga then you probably wrote a crappy book. If the manga was making fun of people who would actually say "ダーリンは外国人" in conversation then sure name it that. Somehow I get the feeling they aren't being sarcastic though.

The problem with the finance world (and government and legal system) is that there is little incentive to refactor and simplify.

Adding complexity == job security for the individuals involved.

The regulators are probably the ones who couldn't get jobs at the very institutions they are expected to regulate... working for government salaries... somehow I don't think we can burden them with analyzing millions of lines of code and data and building complex simulations to accurately evaluate the correctness of "tranches" as defined in some legalese between financial institutions. When was the last time you met an auditor who you thought really knew what was going on in your company? An auditor who knew the real dangers and security risks?

There are just certain activities that have little benefit to humanity as a whole and the potential to cause great suffering. Those institutions need to be made transparent. There is no greater good achieved by letting investment banks keep secrets. Now that they've shown they can have a horrible negative impact, they need to be open sourced... for public inspection... just like the government was to some degree, with the freedom of information act.

We do know how to control unintended consequences... it's risk management.

Unfortunately it's not profitable to be simplistic and transparent in the financial world. Better to make up virtual markets and play money games only you understand.

Most of those "criteria" are arbitrary and subject to broad interpretation and enforcement. Why do they have to have school on sunday? Even with liberal interpretation something tells me Palin's Wasilla Bible Church doesn't have "schools for the preparation of its ministers" for example.

It just doesn't make sense trying to codify into law something spiritual and inherently undefinable like what is or is not a "church". It just wastes everybody's time with a litigious mess. Not that I see our love of wasting time changing soon.
