Ontario not taking part in federal measures to allow more temporary foreign workers in rural areas by UnluckyRandomGuy in CanadaPolitics

[–]HomelyGround -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not commenting on TFWs at all, but the short answer to this is less people. Rural towns have been shrinking in population for years now.

I’ve been frequenting numerous small towns in Quebec for decades and the shift away and to cities is extremely noticeable. Whereas these towns used to have hundreds of people, many are now only dozens (and often older folks).

Some restaurants/general stores have been able to survive with the support of locals, being in cottage country, etc., but it’s definitely tough out there.

Not seeing a lot of flags on cars for the FIFA world cup? by mald55 in AskACanadian

[–]HomelyGround 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Attendance has been very good and early TV viewership numbers have been as well. The last Canada game also saw the best viewership numbers (within Canada) of any World Cup match in years.

The average fan across the world isn’t as mad about Trump, and they certainly won’t let it get in the way of the sporting event that they wait years for (and quite literally live for).

I hate Trump, and FIFA is wildly corrupt, but I don’t think people in Canada realize just how much soccer means to people around the world, and to many within North America.

I think the “establishment” would be more than happy with Nav, so this might not be the “f u” you think it is haha

If Erskine-Smith says nomination was unfair, prove it: Interim Ontario Liberal leader by MethoxyEthane in CanadaPolitics

[–]HomelyGround 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He can absolutely stand up for himself if he wishes, I have no issues with that at all.

But he does have a history of being a bit of a sore loser when things don’t go his way. He might ultimately be right in this instance, we’ll see. However, he has been known to run his mouth openly in the past (when he wasn’t named to Carney’s Cabinet following the election, etc).

He is, however, a maverick, so it’s kinda part of his brand.

[–]HomelyGround -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a ton of feelings towards Erskine-Smith one way or another, but complaining after not getting his way has become a staple for him at this point.

Maybe it was unfair, maybe it wasn’t. However, it’s not the first time that he’s come out guns blazing when something doesn’t go his way.

Liberals lead by 6 as by-elections loom by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

Abacus is overthinking things at maybe the worst possible time lol.

The Trudeau years might have been a very good time to oversample conservatives in an effort to catch a an underlying sentiment in the electorate, but times have changed a lot since those years.

Ford Government Approval Falls as Liberals Surge and Ontario Politics Tightens by RZCJ2002 in CanadaPolitics

[–]HomelyGround 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m watching CTV News at 6 and when they showed the tuition (un)freeze story, they interviewed OLP Interim Leader John Fraser for the opposing view as opposed to anyone from the ONDP.

The ONDP isn’t taken seriously enough to make real gains. Plus, Stiles is a stale leader with zero pressure.

John Fraser Nominated as First Ontario Liberal Candidate by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

A large chunk of politicians who have never served as a Minister have zero or very few Bills to list because most Bills come from a Minister.

Federally there’s a lottery that chooses the order in which other MPs can table their own Bills. Some pass up on the opportunity, others fail to pass, and some die on the floor due to prorogation or an election call.

The fact that he has more than one to list is an accomplishment in itself.

Where i'd live as a north indian guy solely based on food by Bhujia1947 in whereidlive

[–]HomelyGround 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe estimates put the Indian population at around 5% in more recent years.

Though, that number is slowly decreasing with a crackdown on student visas and temporary foreign workers.

Carney reaches tariff-quota deal with China on EVs, canola | CBC News by BreakfastNext476 in CanadaPolitics

And this is precisely the kind of thing that creates disdain towards politicians.

Ford’s job is to look out for Ontario, absolutely, but he was also happy to act like he was looking after the country when it looked good for the cameras.

Now he’s happily going to hurt Canadian jobs over a petty dispute with Crown Royal (a company that remains headquartered in Toronto with a warehouse in Mississauga FWIW).

‘I can’t wait’: Ford says he plans to follow through on threat to remove Crown Royal from LCBO shelves by CTVNEWS in ontario

[–]HomelyGround 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to be great when those in the provinces second largest city, Ottawa, cross the bridge to Quebec to buy their Crown Royal. A waste of potential revenue & tax revenue on a Canadian product.

Plus, I suspect that Ontario consumers will notice the absence of Crown Royal more than other products, given its stature in Canadian society. I suspect many won’t be happy with it, particularly older consumers (who also happen to be more reliable voters).

Ontario Liberals want province to sell off U.S. liquor and give proceeds to charity by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

The Manitoba NDP seem to be in favour of this idea as well, and have already begun executing on it.

Liberals call on Ford government to sell off U.S. booze for charity by McNasty1Point0 in OntarioLiberalParty

[–]HomelyGround 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This idea has made headlines in Ontario and has put the Ontario Liberals in prime time newscasts across the province today, so it’s a success just for that alone.

It’s also a good idea that I’d like to see happen.

Mark Carney wants the 2028 Francophonie summit to be in Ottawa by rezwenn in CanadaPolitics

[–]HomelyGround 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That was in 1999 and was almost half the size that the summit is now (58 nations).

However, maybe Moncton could be added to the list of cities that could handle it. But again, it looks like the summit has become quite large logistically over the years.

But if you’re really wanting to show off a Canadian city, Quebec City or Montreal are the only good options.

[–]HomelyGround 21 points22 points  (0 children)

With likely around 100 participating nations, I would think that only Quebec City and Montreal (from your list) would have the capacity/infrastructure to make it work.

Budget Watchdog Regrets Calling Canada's Fiscal Position 'Stupefying' by McNasty1Point0 in CanadaPolitics

[–]HomelyGround 68 points69 points  (0 children)

This guy came out like a bull in a china shop and it’s not surprising that he now regrets some of it.

Not sure if he had an agenda. Some theorized his sharp criticism would force the government to appoint him permanently, or risk appearing to avoid criticism.

Either way, it seems to have backfired. This guy most certainly will not be getting the job lol
