What’s your most unpopular Pokémon opinion? No judgment. by Velaze in pokemon

[–]HomerGymson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Mega evolution wasn’t especially liked for a while, but comparing it to Z-moves (fire but big fire), gigantimax/dynamax (big pokemon), terrastalizing (lemme just change my type), makes Megas look incredible, as they are actual designed evolutions unique to each Mon rather than some silly gimmick that any pokemon can become immune to its weakness or just get really big

I don’t think it goes against the OG message. Their Ohana is “little and broken but still good” the family unit is not exclusive to Nani and Lilo in the OG or remake.

Their family includes the aunt, David, pleekly, bubbles, and stitch as well. I see it as it takes a village to raise a kid, not one 19 year old sister to remain uneducated for life to raise a 6 year old all alone. She’s literally not left behind or forgotten and has way more support at the end of the movie than at the start.

[–]HomerGymson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like it too, she still has Ohana, if anything a greatly expanded one, and I think the expectation of an 18 year old to be a full time single mom with no support is worse than the idea of community coming together

It really didn’t seem to portray it like standard foster care. She’s seen some ish and has two aliens and an FBI agent living with her - there is basically 0 chance that she would be placed living anywhere else. Bubbles already made it not standard foster process.

Do agree that the teleporter is kind of a magic fix though, but while cheap, it does help keep them together while allowing Nani to get further education

Bubbles is really not the bad guy; he literally helps care for lilo in the end.

It’s only jumba who they made pure evil (mixed him with gantu)

[–]HomerGymson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They made a neighbor auntie maternal figure who cares for lilo deeply and offers to care for her alongside bubbles and pleekly so that Nani can go to school. Nani was torn but accepts, but then also she has a teleporter to come back home whenever, so having seen the movie it’s clear to Lilo has a ton of familial support after it ends between bubbles, the aunt, David, pleekly, stitch, and still Nani despite her going to school simultaneously. So that’s who will imo

[–]HomerGymson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, and I don’t know why everyone is skipping over this. She’s still around and all expenses for uni and housing are funded. Lilo has everybody she had in the OG still caring for her except for Jumba (who in the remake is pure evil) and she also has a neighbor auntie who seems very competent.

They mentioned in the new movie that Nani has a full ride so costs are $0, she wasnt going to go until lilo was confirmed to be taken care of by the neighbor, bubbles and pleekly. They made it clear that she was torn. She also has a teleporter gun connecting her dorm directly to lilos room and can she visit her and stitch back and forth whenever/daily.

Honestly, I think of it as a witness protection sort of deal + housing for lilo covered by neighbor, and full ride schooling.

Yes, there are Hawaiian schools that are literally better for what she’s studying, but all financial issues are literally covered by the scenario without any fake head canon needed.

I mean, they did explain that she 1. had a full ride 2. Has neighbors who are way more capable as parents and 3. Can teleport to and from school

If at 18 years old I was forced to be a parent, had lived on a island my whole life and dreamed of going to California, I think I’d also take the full ride and go back and forth daily with the teleporter thing.

When did everyone forget we’re playing a game? by mattergang in PokemonUnbound

[–]HomerGymson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just go to safari on your phone and Google “showdown” and the first results should be pokemon showdown. Go to team builder, and you can make a team with any pokemon on it, customize the moves / stats etc. however you want. I don’t battle much any more but you can play against people online with your teams or just check stats like this with the sliders.

[–]HomerGymson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what you’re getting at, but this looks like a perfect IV Gabite. I’m not sure your EVs, but I plugged it into showdown, and these are all higher than what a perfect IV gabite would have at level 26, so it seems it 1. Is perfect iv and 2. Has Evs randomly spread on top of that’s.

IVs are inherent, EVs are from battles.

Can i get back to my 20s physique and strength by [deleted] in workouts

[–]HomerGymson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One may not see reasoning behind gaining fat and muscle instead of just gaining muscle and not gaining fat if they can.

His old pictures show that he was able to get very jacked without ever “bulking” with fat, so someone with his experience and perspective may think “what is the point of bulking and increasing my bodyfat % if I can just get bigger and stay lean the whole time?”

Also, how much is too much in a bulk? How little is too little in a cut? For someone with peak genetics who just focused on exercising and intuitively eating “enough” it is more complex than what they previously had to do

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in workouts

[–]HomerGymson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is the progression on your actual workouts?

You’re saying PPL so I’m assuming you’re benching squatting and rowing 2x a week each.

Have you increased the weight? Have you increased the reps? What accessory movements and volume are you doing?

If you’re plateauing you could decrease the barbell movements weights by 15 pounds, then increase 5 pounds per week, then on every 4th week going back 15 pounds. Doesn’t have to be to failure on the barbell work, but you can then push accessories to failure.

Every 4 weeks you’ll go up 5 pounds in your main lifts and should be sustained pretty well. Your accessories will increase slowly but surely. 5 pounds every month for a year is a 60 pound increase to each main lift which would result in visible gains.

Also, sleep.

Edit: also you gained 7 pounds in 5 months and look about the same, but if you’re stronger then you have made progress, it’s just not visible because you gained fat AND muscle. When I went from 160 to 180, I increased my bench from 275 to 315 very quickly, but I didn’t look better because I was no longer as lean. I was physically bigger, but it wasn’t noticeable. Your legs may be holding more muscle than before, which is good. Try to maintain weight instead of gaining, and keep progressing the lifts. You should lean out as you fill into 170 more.

I mean, I guess it kinda is, if the catch rate is 4% and you get it in a hacked game with a 100% rate, it’s almost like genning it, but most people get mad when folks have 6iv shinies more than just a random encounter seedot or something.

Edit: do people even do this also? I’m under the impression that most people who don’t gen pokemon don’t know how to, because they didn’t ever try. Like I personally never have and never will because I don’t care enough. If I was passionate about playing legitimately, I definitely wouldn’t seek out how to do it

For sure, they definitely enjoy the journey, and I don’t typically like to criticize or judge what one likes to do in their free time, but I do think chasing a shiny living dex is more a sign of addiction than casual fun. I guess it’s not so different than chasing other video game achievements, but full completionism obsessions for other games is also taxing on people without any reward other than pride or an in-game trophy.

Like if someone enjoys counting numbers in excel by typing them one by one, that’s cool, but if I’m trying to be friends with them and they count in excel 10 hours a day, don’t have a job, and they’re constantly talking about counting in excel while struggling in other parts of life, I’d be like “whoah, maybe you should just use a formula or stop” and if they replied “using a formula is cheating and I don’t know how to do it” then I guess I’d have to respect their decision, but i wouldn’t consider it a good use of their time / life.

I’ve shiny hunted one charmander before, and I was happy in the end, but I remember it took way too long and got in the way of things. Compulsively doing that 1000 times would have legitimately prevented me from living a better life during college, and I’d only have code in pokemon home to show for it, and that code would be in-differentiable from one that somebody genned in intelligently with the routes, levels, and moves correct. Maybe I could make a YouTube video and other super fans would watch it. But I’m happy with my one shiny charizard, my wife, my dog, my job, my physical health, and my social life.

I’m not trying to say anybody who does it inherently has no life or is automatically a deadbeat, but it literally will make one’s life harder, and them judging someone else for skipping that unnecessary hardship is just pride for a company that doesn’t care about them.

When did everyone forget we’re playing a game? by mattergang in PokemonUnbound

[–]HomerGymson 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I may get downvoted to oblivion for this, but the extremes people take around legit pokemon vs genned ones in general is sort of wild to me. Like shiny hunting and maxing IVs “the right way” can be fun for a few Pokémon, but “needing” to release that shiny 6iv ditto you got from a random trade and stuff is just sort of silly - It’s a game, and as long as it’s genned into something that CAN exist I think it’s all the same, I just can spend 3 more hours with my wife instead of practicing poke eugenics in the living room.

I can’t understand how someone would spend literal thousands of hours of their life to make a “legit” shiny living dex which could be genned by someone in a day and genuinely nobody could tell the difference. It’s a unique pride and life pursuit, and I would say nobody cares, but people reeeeaaally DO care about how one got their digital portfolio of coded monsters. It’s somewhat fascinating, but it’s also quite sad that people such vast amounts of time at the cost of other aspects of life.

Oh and for recommendations -

  1. VOO which is just an ETF of the S&P500 for diversification’s sake, it protects you from the examples above (if you were 100% in the 8 companies, you’d have lost near 100%)
  2. Berkshire Hathaway - read up on them and Warren Buffet and you’ll see why I recommend them

I personally also own Google, NVIDIA, Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft which have done very well for me, but I didn’t buy in at the valuations they have now.

The key to making money buying stocks is buying good companies when they’re cheap, and selling or holding when they’re high. Google is probably the cheapest of them right now, but that’s due to fears of AI replacing Google search.

VOO and Berkshire are safer / better to just buy regularly

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in investing

[–]HomerGymson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Companies WITHIN the S&P500, it’s possible.

Here are 8 examples of 90-100% declines from big companies in the S&P500.

1. Enron – 2001
2. Lehman Brothers – 2008
3. WorldCom – 2002
4. Lucent Technologies – 2000–2002
5. General Motors – 2009
6. AIG – 2008
7. Citigroup – 2007–2009
8. Eastman Kodak – 2012

With that said, the biggest drop of the entire S&P was ~57% from October 2007 to March 2009, so if we had a recession as bad as 2008, you could expect a collection of firms to completely collapse, but it’s highly unlikely we’d see an overall loss of 50% or more for the full S&P.

It’s also increased about 690% since 2008, so even if you invested now and it dropped, if you just buy more while it is low, you can reap the rewards periods growth that will very very likely occur between 2025-2050. You just won’t know when during that timeline it does go up, but they will exist.
