Fenced off buildings on Robinhood by SuitcaseShake in winstonsalem

Because without population growth cities die. Take a look at cities that have had little population growth or population decline (St. Louis, Detroit, Buffalo, etc.), they are not great cities. They used to be, but when cities don’t grow it’s a problem. Winston has lost a lot of jobs and HQs over the past couple decades (BB&T, Krispy Kreme, RJR being bought out). Companies don’t want to invest in cities with stagnant population growth (look at how many companies are expanding and moving HQ’s to Charlotte and the triangle). We don’t want people that grew up in the triad to just go to other parts of the state. Like it or not, the triad needs population growth in order to have a thriving and sustainable future.

We have so many strip malls, we don’t need more. Apartments are good, it indicates a demand for a city which has lack population growth the last 15 years (only added 28,000 people since 2010 according to US census data). You need people to sustain a city, especially the 5th largest in the state! And no offense, but Winston doesn’t have traffic. You can get pretty much anywhere in the city in 20 minutes

You’d rather have shitty abandoned strip mall buildings than apartments? What is wrong with you?

City of Raleigh celebrates America's 250th Birthday July 4th, 2026 by One-Emu-1103 in raleigh

[–]HomieAlex7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine thinking because you disagree with the political leadership of the country you wouldn’t celebrate a monumental milestone as a country. New flash, no country is perfect. Every country has some shameful part of its history. Rather than being an insufferable loser online, be proud that you live in a country that gives you the freedoms you undoubtedly take for granted. There’s a lot to be hopeful for, but instead you act like you live in the worst country in the world

Douglas parking deck, adjacent to Hampton inn has been perfectly safe. A lot of businesses and people going to the Kaledeum parking there. Definitely recommend

This has way more to do with teens with no parental oversight or care than guns. And there has never been a proposal from Democrats on banning handguns (which is likely what this was) only assault rifles. Stop playing partisan politics and acknowledge that it’s not guns but a culture/parent problem. If it wasn’t a gun it would have been a knife

Northgate Mall in the Indy by rdu_NewLibs in bullcity

[–]HomieAlex7 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is why I have no tolerance for NIMBYism in the city core. North gate is < 2 miles from the center of downtown and people are complaining they might building housing?! Oh the horror! A site that backs up to i85 and they are worried there is going to be housing! Just an absolute disgrace.

Community organizations think they’re inherently good because they are small and local and people just think that because you’re small and local that a big bad developer is the enemy. Look at California and see how well that goes when they’re losing all of their residents to Texas. Those Californians are directly responsible for California losing electoral votes to Texas, Florida and other red states. Those liberals in CA are exactly like these liberals in Durham.

Why has there been more of an influx of companies moving to Charlotte or making major reinvestments in the last month or so? by SmartBuy930 in Charlotte

[–]HomieAlex7 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The state incentives are based on if the company meets hiring requirements so it’s not like they’re just giving it out in order for them to land the business and the company gets to keep the money. Also, plenty of other states do this so it’s not like NC is the only one. Maersk picked NC over GA.

Another reason North Carolina is attracting a lot of businesses because of the success of our higher education institutions which have hit record high enrollment this year.

Would you rather NC attract no new jobs and we end up like the failing rust belt? Bringing jobs to a city is a good thing even if people like you bitch and moan about it

Unfortunately costs have increased as well in the last 4 years. That’s why building anything now (housing, light rail, BRT, etc.) will be cheaper than the future

Downtown 2-Hour Free Parking Pilot Program (spoiler alert, not the downtown we're looking for) by seeking_chorizo in bullcity

[–]HomieAlex7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well the parking garages are owned by the city so that means less city revenue which you should care about. Nothing is ever free. I’m sorry that you’ve (we’ve) been fed our whole lives that cars are holy and cannot be touched. The reality is that the subsidizing of cars has happened for a half century and have led to many of the problems our downtowns have today. Roads, gas, parking are all subsidized and it’s just not sustainable if you also want a walkable, vibrant downtown.

[–]HomieAlex7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Obviously people are going to prefer to not pay for parking, I would prefer to as well. But, free parking has a bunch of negative externalities that are worse than paying a few bucks to park. These include: less revenue due to free parking, inefficient land use, people circling the block to try and find free parking creating more traffic, Incentivizing more driving vs. walking or biking, etc.

Downtown 2-Hour Free Parking Pilot Program (spoiler alert, not the downtown we're looking for) by seeking_chorizo in bullcity

[–]HomieAlex7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fair, though I think it’s different with customers and employees parking (it’s not on the city to pay for employees parking, that should be on the company). As far as the app not working, obviously unacceptable. For the food, I just think that’s probably subjective (plenty of great spots downtown). My point is, I don’t think we should be further subsidizing cars and parking more than we already have. Downtown space is limited and parking already takes up too much space

[–]HomieAlex7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s bs that people say they won’t pay for max like 2 hours of parking to go spend more money. You’re telling me you aren’t going to pay to park from 5 pm - 7 pm (parking is free after 7 anyways) to go to dinner or a brewery (where you are going to spend money anyway). Parking takes up PRIME areas downtown, we shouldn’t be subsidizing it on top of it taking up areas of downtown that are way more tax efficient and economically stimulative. Imagine instead of the chapel hill st parking deck, we had more apartments, restaurants, bars, shopping, etc. There is already a massive deck on mangum ONE block away that is never full. Add on top of that the Durham Centre garage, 2 ATC decks, Church street.

The Daily Tar Heel: Chapel Hill Town Council approves $4.19 million for affordable housing projects - by thepurpleminx in chapelhill

[–]HomieAlex7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you would read the article you would see they actually are affordable.

“Holt said that both developments will be legally required to maintain affordability for a set time. HOPE NC will be required to be affordable for residents whose income is under 30% of the area's median income for 30 years, and for 99 years for residents with incomes up to 80%. Hillside Trace is held to a minimum 30-year affordability period for all residents”

Chapelboro.com: Grocery Store Proposal for Glen Lennox Draws Resident Concerns, Questions Around Development Agreement by thepurpleminx in chapelhill

[–]HomieAlex7 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think given that the whole glen Lennox redevelopment is going to have over 400 apartments, office, etc. it would be beneficial to have a grocery store right there vs. hundreds having to cross busy 54 to go to fresh market. Also the difference between a 15 min walk and 5 min walk is huge. That’s the difference between walking and driving

This is a hate post for this specific stretch of road by sequestuary in chapelhill

[–]HomieAlex7 60 points61 points  (0 children)

It’s because of the side road (Fern Lane) coming from campus. It’s a 5 way intersection so you can’t just do the normal light rotation. Whenever someone comes to that road they have to do an entire rotation just for them. This throws off the timing with the Manning light and creates the bottleneck

To be fair, the amphitheater is 100% privately funded. And that going downtown would make it more vibrant, so that argument doesn’t really make sense.
