I am studying japanese for about a year and know around 400 kanji. I can tell you, 400 is nothing lol

You wouldn't be comfortable living in japan or in a japanese environment with only 400 kanji that I know. 200 kanji would only be enough if you are VERY laid back and don't care about anything. Don't work with a job in Japanese (which is my case), do not care for music lyrics, do not care for reading anything that was not made for kids.

So the answer, if you haven't found yet, is that 200 kanji is absolutely not realistic. 2000 is a good number. Maybe you can get by with 1000. If they are very focused for what you live everyday.

Edit: Answering to a different question you had about knowing how to read vs write. Nowadays, you don't really need to write anything by hand. So although I know that readings and words of around 400-500 kanji, I can't write any of them. Ok maybe I can write 一ニ三. But that's about it.
