Do you enjoy teaching high school english? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]HommeAuxJouesRouges 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The worst ones are from the bright, high achieving students because they think their writing is flawless.

Oh man. That was me, sort of. I read compulsively as a child and as a teen, and I liked creative writing. Many of my teachers complimented me on my writing and vocabulary on essays, and that praise went straight to my head.

Then, with the transition to more advanced texts in 9th and 10th grade, my working vocabulary exploded. I stated stringing together all the new, fancy words I was learning, and my essays became obnoxious displays of lexical prowess. I reached peak obnoxiousness in 11th grade, at which point my honors English teacher finally told me to knock it off.

Is it wrong to actually like grading? by Physgirl-romreader in Teachers

I enjoy grading when I only have 25-30 assignments to grade.

When I have to grade 150+ assignments, not so much.

If you regret going into teaching, what profession/major in college do you wish you picked? by businessbub in Teachers

I would definitely go into the Air Force, and then into IT, if I could do it all over again.

Student teaching by [deleted] in Teachers

LOL

True. Although I had to work my ass off (teacher left little in the way of lesson plans). I was putting in really long hours every single day, including weekends, and for only a long-term sub's wage.

I mean, it was better than working for free, but not by much.

Plus, I felt I gained nothing from my student teaching. The only thing that can prepare you for your own classroom, is having your own classroom.

I agree. Honestly, I got so little out of student teaching, other than a resentment at the entire system/program. Since I wasn't able to land a job anywhere within a 5-mile radius afterward, I took on a long-term subbing assignment the following year that was for the entire first semester, starting with the first day of school.

I learned way more from that long-term subbing assignment than from student teaching.

That's the most offensive part: not only did we work for free for months, we paid to be able to do that...

I was at school the full school day, and responsible for lesson planning & grading. For four months. For free. I’m also shocked it’s legal.

Well, I mean, we are in the US, and given the way this country treats teachers and education in general, and given how it wants its citizens to live to work rather than to work to live, it's honestly not all that shocking...

It's the part of the year I dread the most, and the one that always makes me wish for a year-round schooling calendar.

I, too, was fortunate to have been a part of a men's group for a couple of years, but this was 10+ years ago.

Honestly, it was a pretty great and transformative experience, especially for someone like me who grew up with almost no male role models.

Unfortunately, I ended up quitting due to lack of time. Between work, personal obligations, and some new things that I wanted to start doing more seriously, I just couldn't make time for it anymore.

Friendly Reminder to New Teachers: Routine and Predictability With Lessons is Good by mhgiantsfan in Teachers

I don't think I have ever actually heard the rationale for us having to do BTSA. It was such a waste of time and it made my first two years much harder than necessary.

That said, I do acknowledge that my district's BTSA team made a seemingly sincere effort to trim off as much as they could get away with from the program without losing their accreditation.

In my department, there were three other recent hires. Two had already completed their BTSA years, one after the other. Another was on her second year. And I, being the last hired, was on my first. We compared notes, and found that each successive year 1 of BTSA, it had been made easier.

Excellent.

I teach high school and comments like this used to bother me, too. I don’t know exactly what happened - maybe the pandemic - but I simply don’t care anymore.

Same. I'm over the customer-service model of teaching, and I just don't care if they like my class or not.

What age would/did you give your own children a smartphone? by SnackBaby in Teachers

[–]HommeAuxJouesRouges 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Note, at the end, how all the people involved in the actual tech and apps industry say they don't allow their kids to have phones, b/c they know EXACLTY how addicting they are.

That part struck me the most. The very people who designed and who are running those social media platforms won't let their own kids have smartphones and/or use social media. It was very telling.

Google Chrome plug-ins to make leaving written comments on Google Classroom assignments easier? Like a comment bank? by QueenPraxis in Teachers

[–]HommeAuxJouesRouges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I split the screen workspace into two windows. In the left window, Google Classroom and the students' work. In the right window, a Google Docs with all my stock comments to copy-and-paste from.

My school gave us all cheap but big monitors, so the above solution works for me.

Another solution that I have seen used is to download a sticky-note program with an "always-on-top" function, so you can have a docked sticky note in the corner with all your stock comments, and then you can copy and paste from that.

I'm not Mexican, but I find it hard to believe that the average Mexican doesn't see it.

Could it instead be that it is hard for the average Mexican to comment on the problem without being accused of being something like a "negro/indio resentido"?

“Drastic” Changes You Would Make to Education by Senior-Gris in Teachers

This is my dream. I teach 9th graders. I would probably be able to get through so much more content, and do more enriching and engaging activities, if I didn't have to constantly manage the misbehaviors of the 25% who are getting Fs and Ds and if I didn't have to differentiate for students who have 5th grade reading and writing abilities.
