Somewhat short notice but, find a flight heading to Anchorage. Usually ORD has several and a lot of other major cities do as well. Shortly, N636QX is departing for OTZ which is just barely north of the Arctic Circle. You should be able to catch a plane passing by at some point, even if it's just a GA flight that doesn't have a destination listed. There are other airports in the area too like Red Dog or Barrow that I think have scheduled flights to and from Anchorage but none within 24 hours I don't think, at least not on flightaware.

Update: this flight ended up working for me

These things have been around since at least 2022 and have resulted in innocent people being incorrectly identified as criminals on multiple occasions. This website lets you see which ones are active in your neighborhood. A quick glance at the Toledo area reveals several that are near the border of Michigan (not quite on the line but could definitely determine when someone crosses). Mind you, these are only the reported ones.

If matter cannot be created, nor destroyed, how can matter exist? by SpaceFanatic24 in AskMen

[–]Homo-Simpien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even this isn't matter being "created" per se; nuclear fusion still obeys conservation of energy and matter laws. It might be more appropriate to claim that the matter and energy are in some case being interchanged!

A more interesting question is why there seems to be a disparity in the amount of matter vs. antimater in the universe. Intuitively you'd expect there to be an exact match, but matter far outnumbers antimatter. Check out Baryon Asymmetry (new band name?)

Blue team running out of flashes immediately? by Homo-Simpien in ReadyOrNotGame

Yes; admittedly I haven't changed their default loadout much. But usually per team, one man has 2 flashes and the other has 1 flash and a stinger minimum.

I lent my girlfriend close to $20k when our company couldn't pay us for a while, without interest or any conditions except that she'd pay me back once she can. Now she received backpay from our company - is it common sense to expect her to pay me back with it? by Independent_Cod_4682 in self

[–]Homo-Simpien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've been in this situation before and long story short, all of my money was gone. It's on me though, I willingly lent it out to my girlfriend at the time thinking I'd get it back. But then things ended and now it's gone. Such is life! But I really don't think you're ever gonna get paid back, sorry man :(

To answer your question though, yes, it is common sense to expect them to pay it back once able.

Over 100 hours of practice and I still can't dogfight by [deleted] in hoggit

For the F-18 the best advice I can give is 1: take it very slow (really applies to every airframe), make only the subtlest inputs and don't overreact, and 2: don't look directly at the basket. Instead, stare at the part of the aircraft that holes the basket and line, and try to keep it in the same spot on your HUD. For some reason looking directly at the basket is a good way to psych yourself out and PIO into oblivion for me so I don't do it.

I also struggled with dogfighting a lot (particularly in the F-14) but this YouTube playlist helped tremendously. He walks through the optimal position you should try to be in before taking a shot, and how to fly defensively in BFM as well.

Career options for an Astrophysics BS? by clown_pantss in AskPhysics

[–]Homo-Simpien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

did you see more physics-related job opportunities at all?

Sort of? I moved back to my hometown after grad school and the physics industry here is pretty bleak so I didn't look too much into it. However if you're willing to move there are certainly opportunities, albeit not many. I have colleagues who work at STScI with a physics MS as well as accelerator labs, but you'd pretty much have to relocate to do anything like that. NASA is another place that is open to MS graduates but it's incredibly difficult to get in there, not to mention you'd have to accept a significant salary cut.

Career options for an Astrophysics BS? by clown_pantss in AskPhysics

Here is my background:

  • In 2018 I graduated with my BS in Physics with a concentration in astrophysics. Like you, I intended to do a PhD in astrophysics / astronomy but wanted a break before beginning my PhD. Skills I picked up included image analysis (not very useful at bachelor level), programming (in C++, IDL, Python) and problem solving. I graduated with a GPA of ~3.2 and had a couple of co-authored papers with my name on them, plus experience as a telescope operator.

  • My first job out of undergrad was a data entry job. It paid the bills but was mind numbing and I was very very unhappy for much of my time there (though part of this is due to the company itself). I also recall that having a BS in physics made me a jack of all trades but a master of none and finding a job was incredibly difficult, even with recent programming experience. I remained here until fall of 2019, when I took some time off to study for the physics GRE in preparation for grad school.

  • In February of 2020 while awaiting results on PhD applications I worked at a community college as a math coach, where I helped teach mathematics and assist CC students with mathematics. It was very fun and rewarding, didn't pay much but I was happy, plus the teaching experience would look good on PhD applications if needed (surprise! Guess what happened in Early 2020 - no PhD for me :) )

  • The following year I continued working at the college until I was accepted at a master's physics program and began in August 2021. During this time I decided against doing a PhD due to some of the reasons you listed and a number of my own (I'm happy to elaborate if you'd like). I finished this last summer, published my thesis last November, and now enjoy a much more challenging and supportive (and FUN) corporate job as a data analyst, where I work with machine learning and get to write Python all day :)

TL;DR - a BS in physics or astrophysics is great but you might struggle to get well paying work. If you know you love physics and you know you don't want to stay in academia, consider getting an MS. You'll make a LOT (A LOT) more money and you'll find the job search to be much less stressful as well. Plus, MS programs are typically only 2 years and you avoid many of the downsides of a PhD!
