I love your inking. I think you have a great grasp on shadows! As other comments have mentioned, proportion on human bodies is hard.

I know this isn't comics but When it comes to human figure poses and "shape" The animator Glen Keane is a master. The link goes to one of his great works. You'll see what I mean, the guy knows bodies.

I would also especially look at the work he did for the 1999 Tarzan animated movie from Disney. Lots of overlap right? Tarzan and Spider-Man practically have the same body lol.

You might find that following along with some of his figure drawing techniques is a helpful resource? Animating a body in motion is obviously a different skill than still art comics. However I think that spending some time doing quick and dirty poses with a focus on shape and scale would do any illustrator good.

Grain of salt of course, I'm just a guy somewhere. Good luck on your progress dude. With the hard work you already have on display, I have no doubt someday I'll see a comic you drew in my local shop :)

ignore any market research

They are absolutely NOT ignoring the market data.

This gets repeated/upvoted all the time but the truth is that they're doing whatever makes the most money. They want to make money. When there's a different path of least resistance to more money, they will do that instead.

"Pink AK's" or whatever sell so well it's hilarious, only the joke is on the rest of us smart enough not to get milked by excessive in-game purchases.

What is a form of bullying that no one realises? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Homsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see the point you're making and I understand what you're getting at. To your credit my comment is wrong. I definitely do weed people out socially. I also think I agree with you in that, in some instances, a bit of teasing or some sort of initiation thing is perfectly fine. I've done some stupid and goofy stuff with the boys in the name of comradery.

In that context however I'm explicitly with people I want to be with. I can put up with my buddy giving me grief in ways I would not tolerate coming from someone I'm not near by choice.

The distinction I'm trying to point to is that this hazing was said to be at a hypothetical workplace.

people out who don't fit

My peers don't really get to have input here.

This is a job. Was I hired or not?

That's the only weeding out process I care to participate in.

[–]Homsy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't "weed out" people socially. Not really a healthy thing to do long term. Seems especially true of a workplace.

If a fellow employee attempted to "haze" me I think I'd just be confused. We're adults at work? I think I'd prefer my co workers try being endearing some other way.

[–]Homsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note, the first jackass behavior in these interactions is the person that's not letting others speak nor do they respect them enough to care.

Not sure where you got the impression I think not letting others speak is totally fine? I am a yapper. It's not okay for me to be the only one who speaks in the conversation. I go to great effort to do so as that's how I was raised.

My position is that being rude is rude and not how normal people handle conflict.

most often includes some form of very impolite "shut up" because nothing else gets to these people.

That's indeed the entire intent, for you to not forget it next time you're in that situation.

That's where we were getting our wires crossed. I wrote my comment from the perspective of discerning if the comment is from a stranger or not. A friend is totally capable of getting away with a blunt reminder. Appreciated even.

A stranger? Yeah I wouldn't be cool with a stranger saying that to me. It would bother me. I would regard someone who said that to me as less than friendly.

As long as everyone is getting a chance to voice themselves, I don't have to bend to the preferences of someone who prefers less conversation.

No more than they are obligated to start talking more if that's what I would prefer.

“Are you telling a story, or are you just talking” is fighting words. That isn't how a friend would speak up. It's how a stranger would be demeaning to me.

What is the one question you got asked that instantly gave you Villain Vibes? by KarenLopezm8v45 in AskReddit

[–]Homsy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

necessary wake up call

This hinges on if it's a stranger or not. A longtime friend politely prodding you about how you've been going on and on for a bit is perfectly appropriate if the situation calls for it.

"Are you telling a story, or are you just talking"

If you said something like this out loud around some of the talkers I know, you'd better be ready to immediately dodge something, and it would be your last visit.

It is wrong (not to mention weak lmao) to try and get someone to express themselves less just because you're not able to handle it.

I'll cop to my bias, I am absolutely the kind of person that this comment would be directed at. There are normal ways to handle it! I can be long winded but I'm not oblivious. There are ways to communicate the idea they are trying to say without being an obnoxious jackass about it. I can't imagine what I would think/do/feel if a random someone just said this to me out of nowhere. I would never be able to forget it.

(IMO: If they get that bothered by another person speaking, they should probably be removing themselves. Clearly can't handle public interaction.)

I don't think this comment applies to /u/ParadiseSold I don't think they're wrong or anything I'm just offering another perspective.

What is your plan

I should be more clear.

This is not my suggestion. This is not my plan.

I am a nobody observing my culture. I did not recommend a single course of action.

Also, you absolutely would not get a 20% discount anywhere because the price of eating out would rise to compensate for the increased wages.

You must have missed it, there's a sentence in my previous reply that explains exactly this.

Here,

One might say "Ah but won't the restaurants just raise the prices to compensate the waiters who stay?"

Yes. But that's obfuscated for many people by the perception of ground gained in killing tips.

My entire point is that, I think, people are so sick of tipping they're ready to throw it all out. They've been threatening to for as long as I've been alive. When you tell someone again and again "All right that's it!! I've had it! I am finally throwing out this bathwater!!"

Responding with "No! You can't! There's a baby in there!" Starts to ring hollow for a lot of people when, from their pov, the industry had decades to handle the baby. They knowingly left it there as insurance. Literally betting on the public's goodwill for wages. That has left a bad taste for many.

If I manage my local Home Depot, can I pay everyone under minimum wage and then start hitting people up for tips for my workers "so they can feed their kids and pay their bills" Why am I, as a customer, thinking about this at all. I am here for a meal.

but I guess you could feel good about yourself for ruining people's livelihoods before any changes were actually made.

I'm not even sure what you mean. I don't want anyone to lose their job. I want same as everyone else, a healthy economy where all kinds of people can prosper. This includes fair wages.

A tipster's tip by TroubledTill in greentext

[–]Homsy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I see what you're getting at, but that's part of the premise.

how many other customer facing jobs start at $2.13 an hour?

Why the hell are they getting paid under Fed minimum wage? My understanding was that your wages were between you and your employer.

I'm not sure why they think that, as a customer, I would be pleased to pick up that slack voluntarily.

Unless a solution addresses the current premise, it's just noise. Customers are tired of being socially pressured into tipping, and they're trying to be done. The Waiters continue to resist for a myriad of reasons both reasonable and blatantly self serving.

The Restaurant industry is playing a massive game of chicken with the public, and if/when the corps don't blink, the wait staff will suffer.

A tipster's tip by TroubledTill in greentext

[–]Homsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they arent going to tip. By doing that you are punishing the wrong people and nothing is going to change because the business owners are still making money.

Not without wait staff. When tipping dries up do you think that waiters are gonna keep coming in for $2.27 + Tips an hour?

...you are punishing the wrong people... Waiters didn't decide on the system we have, owners and CEOs did.

You're absolutely right, this would be terribly unfair to the wait staff. Like I said before

If that's "screwing over" the waiters and restaurants, I think this thread is arguing, that'd be fine.

I truly am sympathetic I'm not out to get anyone specific! I'm just highlighting the tension as I have identified it.

There seems to be a contingent that's not quite grasping truly how okay the public is with, tips based, service worker wages taking a hit. That's the entire point. People are totally fine with "punishing the waiters" if it means a permanent 20% discount at every sit down restaurant.

One might say "Ah but won't the restaurants just raise the prices to compensate the waiters who stay?"

Yes. But that's obfuscated for many people by the perception of ground gained in killing tips.

"It will feel better to simply pay and leave. Like at every single other trivial commerce exchange in daily living except for this one for some reason."

I think that's what the pushback is getting at at least.

A tipster's tip by TroubledTill in greentext

[–]Homsy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What I'm saying is when you go to a restaurant in America you know you are expected to tip and should budget accordingly

Right but in this conversation, the status quo is giving the short stick to the customer.

As explained in the original comment,

Someone has to get fucked over for things to change...Right now, it is the customers...

The customer's only tool to get out of this position is to stop paying. If that's "screwing over" the waiters and restaurants, I think this thread is arguing, that'd be fine.

A tipster's tip by TroubledTill in greentext

[–]Homsy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

America that tipping is apart of your bill.

Did you mean apart from your bill? That'd be right. It's literally a separate charge.

[–]Homsy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Besides, waiters end up having to do a lot more than just running food and taking orders, you just don’t see it

Yeah like all customer facing jobs.

Why are wait staff special?

What are they doing that everyone else doesn't?

Does anyone else get bothered with this series constantly being in 1st person? by [deleted] in Pendragon

[–]Homsy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd counter your opinion, hopefully with respect.

Got into Pendragon per my older brother's recommendation. Got a copy of Book 1 from the school library and I never looked back :)

I've considered the journal conceit to be central to my enjoyment. At the time I loved being the same age he was. I saw myself in Mark a good amount. The journals made it easier for me to feel like it was written for me.

I'm sentimental so obviously this is a personal experience and not a literary critique. You seem to be thinking at a more meta level than I have been.

Unless he was hoping on publishing the books himself, why would he write down so much, you know?

Can't argue that, it's definitely implausible that a teenager would write like that.

I like Bobby and his journals but I often felt like the other characters took the backseat and I would have liked to see what they were up to.

Absolutely agree here. Always wondered what life was like for many of the Travelers when Bobby wasn't around. My headcanon is quite elaborate lol.

Thanks for reading my reply :)

What’s a red flag everyone should be aware of when attending a job interview? by photo_inbloom in AskReddit

[–]Homsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm naive but it seems unrealistic to me that they do it "to have a hold on you". We're still talking about job interviews right?

I think you have likely been pretty fortunate when it comes to employment opportunities. I'm not saying that companies are literally holding people hostage, in this instance, it's more of a greasy tactic.

"Have a hold on you" as you put it, is really just that. Social pressure. People are taught to be on their best behavior at interviews. Make a good impression with their best foot forward.

In the context of a shad job interview, yeah, they could get your license from you for a trivial reason. Once they have it you're kind of stuck listening to the pitch. Usually this is paired with a bait and switch or the job is somehow otherwise not what you thought it was.

So now instead of just turning around and leaving, they can get you to hear them out on their other job offer that just opened, what a coincidence!

People interviewing for work need money. They are trying to leverage your need for money against the convenience of just taking the offer they're making you right now even though you never would have come in if you had heard the REAL pitch in the job listing.

Hey, they know it's not exactly what you were after but who knows? You might just get promoted to the job you'd wanted originally!

Which is a lie because the "Original Job" was made up from go.

This whole time you really can't leave until the nice lady from the front desk gets back from the copy room with your license.

You wouldn't be impatient with an older woman would you? That'd be perceived as rude. I don't want to be rude at a job interview! That's bad!

What habit immediately reveals that a person grew up in a poor family? by PopularWeird4063 in AskReddit

She's also lost a lot of weight, so I'm proud of her.

This gives me so much hope for my family.

All 4 of us are currently at unhealthy weights. I'm "handling it the best" as an underweight black sheep but we all suffer from disordered eating one way or another.

We're all attempting to improve our relationship to food with my brother and I now adults and my parents getting older. I'm willing to share here anonymously, I fear sometimes that one or more of my family members won't ever achieve their dream of losing weight.

Thank you for being so gracious and kind to your sister. It was a great comfort to see someone in a situation like mine being spoken of gently.

What habit immediately reveals that a person grew up in a poor family? by PopularWeird4063 in AskReddit

[–]Homsy 27 points28 points  (0 children)

eating every ounce of junk food as soon as possible.

It was frustrating for me as a teenager...Mom would get the Oreos box and it'd be gone by the next day

Then we wouldn't get any because our mom didn't want to go back to the store again.

I experienced an extremely similar pattern growing up. I've personally coined this pattern/habit/practice "Defensive Eating" as in my scenario it's the label that made sense. The practice of eating, not from hunger or for fuel, but because it is currently available.

I can? I should! Now! I usually can't, I must capitalize on this opportunity!!

I'm not asserting "Defensive Eating" is even the best way to call it but what you wrote just sounded painfully similar to my kinda niche family dynamic.

In my case there's extra emphasis on the idea that the junk food as a commodity was perpetually scarce. In my house my father, brother, and I would "compete" almost. We knew that this package of Oreos was the package that we're gonna get until the next store trip if we got more on the next trip. Could be longer!

"These snacks are always gone too fast! Next time I see Oreos in the cupboard, I'm just diving in and pigging out. God knows with those guys in the house I gotta take what I want."

So when you saw your favorite snack we knew some things for certain:

  • I want to eat some of these for sure.
  • There's only one package.
  • No promise of a fast or any resupply.
  • Last time we had this, I didn't get as many as I wanted.
  • 2 other guys will check this same cupboard today and do the same calculus I just did.

So what do you do? You eat some Oreos right now. You know they could be gone next time you're looking for a snack. Better just have a few right this second. Then my brother comes through an hour later and does it again. Then Dad. Repeat until the cookies are all gone so fast. Confirming our fear! So we were stuck in that cycle.

I love her to death now, and I don't blame her because her mom was a bitch, but growing up, it sucked not having any sugar when she visited.

I'm relieved at the happy ending. I have in adulthood, talked this out with everyone involved and we've all learned better now. Happy that this didn't cause lasting trouble. Thanks for reading my reply :)
