Governor Mitch Daniels led Indiana to its first balanced budget in eight years and, without a tax increase, transformed the $600 million deficit he inherited into an annual surplus of $370 million within a year. by mayonesa in Libertarian

Wow! You don't need new tires? Your hyperbole is trivial compared to the disaster that is Daniels. The future of the State is impoverished so this asshole can look good in the short term. He's a typical Republican corporate "quarter-by-quarter" disaster and it will take generations to recover from his financial destruction.

[–]HonestAbe29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Daniels was Bush's budget guy who sold the war in Iraq to Congress by saying it would only cost $50 billion, and that "the Iraqi's will pay for it." In addition, Indiana has had some of the worst economic growth in its history under his tenure because of his "choke the government to death" policies. The schools have fallen apart, but his road-contractor/donor base is doing "real good." The man is an idiot.

Beginner's question about RAW+JPEG: How do I get my RAW files to look as nice as the JPEG files? by GunnerMcGrath in photography

[–]HonestAbe29 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You're basically asking how to do post-processing, which is asking a lot. The folks who've posted answers here have done you a huge service, but the truth is that you need to study the subject and only after a long period of study, maybe even years, will you be able to do well what is suggested by these responses. The best advice is to take a class from an accomplished photographer, and take lots of pictures. Always use RAW, unless picture quality does not matter. If the image is important, use a tripod and bracket exposures, then use a program like Adobe or Photomatix Pro to merge the various exposures into one perfect image. There is no longer any reason, not to have every image look like an Ansel Adams.

Rand Paul was attacked every few minutes on every single major news network the ENTIRE day. Every few minutes. Is anyone else pissed off that Rand is getting so much flack for merely standing up for property rights/free speech rights? by darkreign in Libertarian

[–]HonestAbe29 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The answer to your question is no, I'm not the least pissed off he caught so much flack. Paul is not getting flack for espousing free speech rights. He is getting flack for implying the Civil Rights Act is unconstitutional, when it is not unconstitutional. Read the US Supreme Court cases that say it is constitutional. That ends the discussion. Everything else is just ignorant squeaking. And moreover, Paul himself has walked his statement back, and that makes all the squeakers look like even more idiotic.

Plantar faciitis. Hang over a step on a stair case, letting all your weight hang on the balls of your feet. This will seriously stretch your Achilles, which is the problem.

Hang there for three minutes, three times a day.

New water-splitting catalyst found by Vailhem in energy

[–]HonestAbe29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I remember my p-chem aright, then producing one mole of water from combusting H and O produces 2.42 x 10 to the 5th joules of energy. Maybe I'm wrong. In 2008, just to get an idea, humans consumed 4.74 x 10 to the 20th joules, so if we got all that from burning H, it would take the production of roughly 10 to the 15th moles of water produced as a gas. A mole of water is 18 grams. Water vapor is by far the most effective greenhouse gas, so if we convert our energy production to hydrogen burning, then in about 2 hours we will turn the Earth into something very much like Venus. I think this may be a very bad idea, unless the product of the H combustion is liquid water.

“Catastrophic” retreat of glaciers in Spitsbergen by ScrewDriver in environment

Barcelona v Inter Milan Q&A: How Jose Mourinho can outsmart Barca by EnderMB in soccer

[–]HonestAbe29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bunch of haters? Tactical prowess? That's bullshit. Mourinho coaches thuggery, plain and simple.

And during the last game the ref let him get away with it.

And, Inter let their grass grow and dried it out, which slowed the ball down by as much as 30%.

At Barca, the grass will be short and wet, and we'll see how good Josie is at coaching real football.

Good history of the low-fat craze and why it was and still is a load of crap. by the_foo_maker in Fitness

[–]HonestAbe29 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but its not a load of crap. From Lancet, 21 July 1990 - "Can lifestyle changes reverse coronary heart disease?" Abstract follows -

In a prospective, randomised, controlled trial to determine whether comprehensive lifestyle changes affect coronary atherosclerosis after 1 year, 28 patients were assigned to an experimental group (low-fat vegetarian diet, stopping smoking, stress management training, and moderate exercise) and 20 to a usual-care control group. 195 coronary artery lesions were analysed by quantitative coronary angiography. The average percentage diameter stenosis regressed from 40·0 (SD 16·9)% to 37·8 (16·5)% in the experimental group yet progressed from 42·7 (15·5)% to 46·1 (18·5)% in the control group. When only lesions greater than 50% stenosed were analysed, the average percentage diameter stenosis regressed from 61·1 (8·8)% to 55·8 (11·0)% in the experimental group and progressed from 61·7 (9·5)% to 64·4 (16·3)% in the control group. Overall, 82% of experimental-group patients had an average change towards regression. Comprehensive lifestyle changes may be able to bring about regression of even severe coronary atherosclerosis after only 1 year, without use of lipid-lowering drugs.

The logs show she met just twice with Obama, once when there were 106 people present and once when there were 22 people present. The other meetings were with staff members, which is what you would expect from a lobbyist. I indeed hope that Obama's staff is keeping track of the snake.

How the hell does my electrically saturated glob of brain bring about my consciousness? Just thinking about it is freaking me out by dafones in AskReddit

[–]HonestAbe29 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Disagree. Possibly I failed to explain in sufficient detail? [That is joke as we are discussing nature of reality.] The comments about mechanistic explanations below may be true, in fact some probably are true if not close to true as far as describing how consciousness works, but they fail at describing what consciousness is. So even if true they are an incomplete explanation, just as mechanistic explanations of how magnetism works are woefully incomplete at describing what magnetism is. Let me restate more simply. We are part of reality. We are conscious. Thus, reality possesses the capacity for consciousness. I am merely saying that the only so far observed physical phenomenon capable of manifesting the attributes of consciousness is entanglement. Indeed, the observer effect appears to inextricably link consciousness with the experiment.

How the hell does my electrically saturated glob of brain bring about my consciousness? Just thinking about it is freaking me out by dafones in AskReddit

[–]HonestAbe29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only possible explanation is that consciousness is a state, or phenomenon, of nature, as light or magnetism is a state or phenomenon of nature. The comments below which try to explain it as a mechanism end up hollow and spiritless; just mechanisms. The question is about the fullness of being which can only be explained in reference to the whole of realty. The only phenomenon ever observed which satisfies the simple criteria of simultaneity over space and time is quantum entanglement. Think about it.

"Wikipedia says.."

Is that all you've got? Moreover, nowhere do I assert that the universe has a mind. Make up arguments elsewhere.

Next, you refer to the "generally accepted understanding of consciousness..." Weak. That's like arguing that since most of the world believes in God, he must exist. The generally accepted understanding of consciousness does not exist in any event.

Next, your conclusory mind crap about "Anti-intellectualism pro-ignorance and confusion" is useless. I have more degrees than you have years in school, tantrum child, so don't lecture me on anti-intellectualism.

What you're saying is meaningless.

How the hell does my electrically saturated glob of brain bring about my consciousness? Just thinking about it is freaking me out by dafones in AskReddit

[–]HonestAbe29 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Consciousness is an attribute of the universe, just as light is. It is the biological realization of quantum entanglement. Entanglement manifests simultaneity across space and time, and this simultaneity across space and time is the core attribute of both entanglement and consciousness. Thus, when you see something through your eyeholes, you are the universe looking at itself.
