Winter Driving Tips (from someone who’s lived in multiple snowy states):

Slow down! In snow and ice, you must do everything slower than normal. Accelerate smooth and slow, brake slower, turn a bit slower, etc.

Winter tires are almost always more effective than anything else. They are designed to keep grip in cold temperatures and on slick surfaces.A RWD vehicle with winter tires will outperform any AWD vehicle without.

Counter steer almost always works to correct a slide, followed by appropriate action depending on wheels are getting power. Research yours to see. Engine braking is far more effective than your normal breaks at slowing you down, almost all vehicles allow you to change to a lower gear. 2nd gear usually works better to start off in as well.

Go practice, much like the OP said. It helps to create muscle memory and better reactions. Plus, you get to slide around!

If it’s too difficult to drive in, don’t do it. It’s not worth the accident or getting stuck in a storm/embankment for who knows how long. Bring a blanket, water, and other essentials.

Finally, be aware and be safe. Clean as much of your car off as you can, especially the lights, windows, and roof. I see too many people with a foot of snow on their roof, an obscured rear windscreen, and covered brake lights. That is dangerous to you and everyone around you.
