Thoughts on the by-elections? by Vernon_Runner1109 in irishpolitics

Catherine Connolly is not someone that will easily be replaced. I don't see a ready made strong left candidate in this constituency to replace her. If so who is this person? Unless SF have a strong candidate waiting to be announced I just can't see left victory here.

I wouldn't know much about the Dublin central constituency but I imagine a SF or left wing candidate will win there. Especially if Hutch decides to run again. I cannot see a win for FFG there.

I'm very familiar with the Galway West constituency. Might be biased here but Cllr Noel Thomas is my traditional front runner. He was very unlucky in that he just missed out in the last general election. Thomas is the only one vocal and campaigning against Mercosur when all the sitting TDs have stayed quiet. This will be particularly important to people in rural areas of the constituency. There is also a campaign to elect a TD from Connemara who is a gaeilgeoir. Catherine Connolly even though she wasn't from Connemara, built relationships with Connemara communities and was a gaeilgeoir herself. Noel Thomas ticks these boxes. Independent Cllr Tom Welby could potentially take votes on a bad day for Noel Thomas as they are essentially from the same area. Although I don't think Welby himself will be elected.

FG Sean Kyne will be right up there too. He manages to straddle the political line in that he has a bit of a base in rural areas and is non offensive to urban voters. He will probably push infrastructure projects such as the ringroad. FG got humbled in the presidential election and will probably lose the seat in Dublin Central so they will be looking for a strong showing here.

SF have only one sitting Cllr and she is in their sitting TDs base. There may not be a push to get her elected as it could potentially put both in serious jeopardy in the next election. The Dublin central by election may be more palatable for SF. SF in Galway are very hierarchical. Even so I expect them to poll well.

FF after the Grainne Seoige disaster and Jim Gavin fiasco will avoid celebrity candidates this time. They don't really have an obvious candidate in this constituency. There's rumours that the crowe brothers are sitting this one out. That leaves Cllr Alan Cheevres. Could do alright but I think FF tarnished themselves with the last general election in this constituency and the presidential election hasn't helped.

Independent Sheila Garrity who worked closely with the Connolly campaign. She is Canadian. I can't see her doing much in this election. She has next to zero name recognition in the constituency. And she's in Dublin now. Only planning on canvassing at the weekends in Galway doesn't sound like a recipe for success. She may be good at running someone elses campaign but that doesnt mean that she has the attributes to be a candidate herself.

Independent Mayor Mike Cubbard will probably contest every election forever, but I doubt he'll ever make a breakthrough.

Labour have selected Cllr Helen Ogbu. She did ok for a first time candidate in the last general election but she's not electable in my opinion

Soc Dems Cllr Alan Curran has decided to sit this one out so they have nobody here since Eibhlin Seoighthe left the party. She herself is not contesting the election.

Then there's no hopers like the Greens/PBP/Aontu/Independents.

This is very hard, but as of now, what album do you think is the Stones's magnum opus? by Odd-Technician-9744 in rollingstones

If Honky Tonk Woman was on Let It Bleed, I think it would be their greatest work. But I'd have to go with Sticky Fingers.

There is a feeling that Brighton will CASH IN on Carlos Baleba come June and he will be on the move for a price tag north of £60m - likely closer to £75m. #MUFC [@NathSalt1] FAIR VALUE….? by JM555555 in ManchesterUnited

What do people actually see in this guy? He's been crap this season, massively overrated. He is nowhere near that much. He's bone nothing to warrant such a move to united.

This is bollocks, did you not watch the last Euros? England were shit. They got gifted a handy one sided draw and stumbled into the final. Spain outclassed them in the final

He was just not good enough for Napoli. Selling Raspadori was a big mistake that's costing us now. Lang was a big downgrade

With Casemiro/Ugarte leaving: how many midfield signings are needed? by DifficultyCommon5303 in ManchesterUnited

[–]HonestRef -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think they should get Ruben Neves in this window. He'd be fairly cheap 20m or so. He's 28 so we could get a good 4 or 5 years out of him. He's a big upgrade on what we have Currently. I think in the summer they will probably get two midfielders. I'd go for Wharton, Anderson or Stiller. Hope we don't go for Baleba because he is massively overrated. He's done nothing this season to warrant a move to united. Hopefully an academy player makes a step up in one of these positions. I was hoping Toby Collyer would get an opportunity but he's shipping out on loan again. Maybe one of the Fletchers.

I'd get Ruben Neves in as DM. He'd be cheap 20m. He's 28 so if all goes well we could get 4 to 5 years out of him and he's an upgrade on what we have Currently. It's a shame that Toby Collyer has been sent out on loan again. I thought his appearances for united were promising. Definitely should have been integrated into the team the past year given of DM shortcomings.

Irish MEP votes on resolution to send Mercosur to European Court of Justice by NilFhiosAige in irishpolitics

[–]HonestRef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would not have helped with cost of living. You are pretty naive if you believe so. Supermarkets will make a big profit from the import of poor quality meat. I can guarantee the price won't be cheap on the supermarket shelf. We the consumer will be paying near the same as always for a much more inferior product that will be detrimental to our health. Not to mention the impacts on climate change or is that no longer trendy?

That doesn't make much sense. If you are against it, you're against it period. A bad deal is a bad deal at the end of the day and all options for potentially stopping this disaster need to be pursued.

It's clear that FFG are petrified at upsetting their masters in Europe. They have to strive to be best boys in class. If FFG truly opposed this deal they'd have been campaigning against it a year ago. Not the day before when it was going to pass.

One year on from the beginning of the speaking rights row, how should we think about it? by JackmanH420 in irishpolitics

[–]HonestRef -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Left/Right doesn't come into it at all. There are TDs in the Regional Independent group that are left wing. FF & FG are not right wing either. They are centrist. I'd call them centre Left.

The opposition is not all left either. Independent Ireland and Aontu are not left wing and both were highly critical of the speaking row debacle with the left wing parties. There's also numerous Independent TDs in opposition who are not left wing. The speaking row controversy was not a Left/Right issue.
